The Zugspitze (/ˈzʊɡʃpɪtsə/ ZUUG-shpit-sə, German: [ˈtsuːkˌʃpɪtsə] ⓘ; lit. '[avalanche] path peak'), at 2,962 m (9,718 ft) above sea level, is the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains and the highest mountain in Germany. It lies south of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, and the Austria–Germany border is on its western summit. South of the mountain is the Zugspitzplatt, a high karst plateau with numerous caves. On the flanks of the Zugspitze are two glaciers, the largest in Germany: the Northern Schneeferner with an area of 30.7 hectares and Höllentalferner with an area of 24.7 hectares. Shrinking of the Southern Schneeferner led to the loss of glacier status in 2022.

Zugspitze reflected in the Eibsee, Bavaria, Germany
Standing astride the Austrian border, the peak called Zugspitze towers almost 10,000 feet over the lake called Eibsee, which reflects it in the foreground of our image. The highest point in Germany, from here it may appear impossibly far away. But head to the Eibsee's southeastern shore and you'll find a cable car with the longest free-spanning section in the world, capable of swooping to the slopes in 7 minutes flat. If dangling in thin air doesn't sound like your thing, a steep rack railway also tunnels up from the nearby town of Grainau.
