신부님과 목사님이 운영하는(be run by a priest and a pastor) 식당이 있다. 메뉴는 딱 하나, 김치찌개(kimchi jjigae). 가격은 3000원. 밥은 무한 리필.

밥값 부족한 청년과 세상살이 버거운(struggle to make a living) 서민을 위해 3000원 김치찌개집을 처음 연 이는 천주교 이문수 신부다. 이름하여 ‘청년밥상문간.’ 모질고 가차 없는 세파(世波) 피해 잠시 쉬었다(take a short break from the harsh and relentless hardships of life) 가는 문간방 역할을 하겠다는 취지다.

2017년 서울 정릉점을 시작으로 현재는 이대점, 낙성대점, 대학로점을 운영 중이고, 안산점은 곧 개점한다. 지난해 8월 문을 연 대학로점에 이어 안산점은 평균 지능과 지적 장애 경계선 지적 기능(borderline intellectual functioning) 청년에게 일자리를 제공하는 상생 일터(win-win workplace) ‘슬로우점’으로 불리게 된다. 정릉·이대·낙성대점도 올해 중에 모두 슬로우점으로 전환할 예정이다.

김치찌개 1인분(one serving) 돼지고기·햄·김치 등 원가(prime cost)는 약 5400원. 자원봉사자 도움으로 인건비를 최소화해도(minimize labor costs) 적자를 감당하기(cover the deficit) 어려웠다. 그런데 입소문이 나면서(as word spread) 개인·기업들의 도움이 답지하기 시작했다(begin to pour in). 김치를 사서 쓰다가 기업 후원을 받게 됐고, 라면 사리도 라면 회사에서 제공해 줘 지점을 늘리게 됐다.

구태여 3000원을 받는 건 최소한의 운영비를 조달하기(cover minimal operating costs) 위한 것이기도 하지만, 무료 급식소(soup kitchen) 인상을 주지 않으려는 배려도 있다. ‘가난한 사람 공짜 밥’이라고 하면, 배를 곯을지언정 자존심은 곯리지(compromise their pride) 않겠다는 청년은 발길 돌릴 것을 염려했다.

이문수 신부는 대학에서 고분자공학을 공부하다 신학으로 바꿔 2008년 사제 서품을 받았다(be ordained a priest). 2015년 한 청년이 고시원에서 굶어 죽었다는(die of starvation) 언론 보도가 계기가 됐다. 곁에 있던 수녀가 ‘청년을 위한 값싼 식당’을 제안, 2년간 준비를 거쳐 2017년 개업했다.

서울 연신내에도 3000원 김치찌개집이 있다. 최운형 목사가 재료 손질부터 요리·설거지까지 도맡는 이 식당 이름은 ‘따뜻한 밥상.’ 미국에서 목회 활동 중 이문수 신부가 배고픈 청년들을 위해 3000원 김치찌개 봉사 한다는 소식을 듣고 귀국, 식당 운영과 조리법을 배워 2018년 문을 열었다. 처음엔 ‘청년밥상문간 2호점’이라고 했다가 누구에게나 따뜻한 밥상을 차려주겠다는 의미를 라면 사리처럼 얹었다.

지난해엔 한 스님이 청년밥상문간 대학로점에서 사찰 음식을 팔고 판매액 전액을 후원금으로 내는(donate the entire amount of the sale) 공양 봉사를 했다. 2023년엔 이태원 참사로 딸을 잃은 어머니가 딸의 27번째 생일을 맞아 이태원 참사 희생자 159명을 기리며 정릉점에서 김치찌개 159인분을 대접했고, 지난해엔 이대점을 찾은 모든 이의 밥값을 대신 내고 설거지 봉사를 하기도(volunteer to do the dishes) 했다.

Lee told the Korea Herald this month that he was inspired to launch Youth Mungan in part after hearing a report of a young man dying alone of starvation in a “gosiwon,” or a cramped private dorm.

The priest told the Herald that, when he first opened the shop, it was losing “about 1 million won a month.” The priest attempted to cover the gap with lectures and donations, though the venture “did not look like a sustainable business model.”

The restaurant offers another ministry in the form of hiring workers with “borderline intellectual functioning,” according to the Herald. Lee told the paper that the restaurant’s simple menu helps those workers acclimate to the job.
