HK groups express solidarity for Korea, condemn US base construction in Jeju
Save Jeju Island! Stop the construction of US naval base in Jeju!
This was the statement of those who attended the solidarity action led by the Asian Students Association (ASA) against the in support of the Jeju people’s campaign to stop the construction of a U.S. military naval base in Jeju Island.
Holding placards and banners, the more than 25 protesters condemned the South Korean government for not only allowing the construction of the said naval base but funding it as well. Several violations have already been committed by the South Korean government as it pursues this project: protesters including a village official and some church leaders have been arrested and detained, cases of harassment and intimidation have been documented, more than 1,000 police have been deployed to the now-fenced site for the naval base.
Rey Asis of the ASA stated that the South Korean government is heeding more the demand of the US government rather than listen to its people and protecting the rights of their citizens and their national sovereignty.
The groups express concern on the possible implications of the naval base’s establishment. This, according to them, is an expression of the US military presence and influence not only in South Korea but wherever there exists a US military base. According to Asis, this is tantamount to foreign military intervention and putting the lives and rights of many people at risk.
Several organizations like the Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants, International Migrants Alliance Hong Kong, Asian Migrants Coordinating Body, Asia Monitor Resource Centre, BAYAN-HK, Indonesian Migrant Workers Union, and the United Filipinos in Hong Kong were present during the protest and supported the petition.
A statement endorsed and signed by many organizations and individuals was submitted to a representative of the consulate at the end of the program.
