The Creation and Re-Creation of Heaven and Earth, and the Law of the New Covenant
After going through the era of Adam and the era of Noah, four generations after Abraham’s descendants entered Egypt, God came to Moses and spoke these words:
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Gn 1:1).
○ The First Day of Creation: Gn 1:2-5
The earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day”, and the darkness He called “night.” However, before He created the light, the formless earth, darkened heavens (sky), and the waters were already there.
○ The Second Day of Creation: Gn 1:6-8
God made the expanse between the waters and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. God called the expanse “sky” (God created the sky (heaven) between the waters).
○ The Third Day of Creation: Gn 1:9-13
God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. He called the dry ground “land”, and the gathered waters he called “seas”. And God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.
○ The Fourth Day of Creation: Gn 1:14-19
God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” Also, God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. Also, God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness.
If so, this is where we can raise questions. If the great light was made and the light separated from the darkness on the fourth day, then what are the light and darkness of the first day? And what kind of light is that of the fourth day? Also, by which light did the vegetation and the fruit of the trees of the third day come to be?
○ The Fifth Day of Creation: Gn 1:20-23
God made the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea and told them to be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.
○ The Sixth Day of Creation: Gn 1:24-31
God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds, and He said “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth and over all the creatures that move along the ground”. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant (on the face of the whole earth) and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.”
○ The Seventh Day of Creation: Gn 2:1-3
Thus, the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day God rested from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. “This is the (general) account of the heavens and earth when they were created”.
The explanation regarding the creation of Genesis 1 is the word that God gave to Moses prior to the subjugation of the land of Canaan. So, Moses recorded the first 5 books (the Pentateuch) starting from Genesis. After this, Joshua led the Israelites and subdued and entered the land of Canaan, but during the reign of Solomon the physical Israelites betrayed by worshipping gentile gods (1Kg 11). The words of Dt 32 that Moses read before the assembly of Israel were the poetic words of revelation that made known God’s heart and His feelings of sorrow over this future event of betrayal that was going to take place.
Let us, the people of today, read Dt 32 and make our faith complete.
I will explain regarding creation and rest (Sabbath) from the first day of Gn 1 to the seventh day of Gn 2:1-3. However, the first thing we must know is whether this creation is a physical creation or a spiritual creation. And we must remember that the time when Moses heard the words of Gn 1 was after the times of Adam and Noah. As we saw in Rv 6 and Rv 21, today, the first heaven and the first earth disappear and a new heaven and a new earth is created. Seeing this, we can know that Gn 1 shouldn’t be seen literally either.
When we look at the day of rest (Sabbath) in Gn 2, how can we not think about the day of rest (Sabbath) spoken of in Moses’ time, the Sabbath of Jesus’ first coming, and the Sabbath of the re-creation at the time of the fulfillment of Revelation? Creation has both physical and spiritual creation. Whether this creation is a physical (the natural world) creation or a spiritual creation, after God creates all the things He has determined, He rests. However, when God’s creation became corrupt in every generation, He tore it down and created once again, so with this the former heaven comes to an end and the latter heaven is created. No matter the generation, God tears down the corrupt world, creates a new world, then rests afterwards. Because the work of creation exists, rest (the Sabbath) also exists.
In Jn 5, the Jews persecuted Jesus for working on the Sabbath. However, the truth is, the Jews broke the Sabbath. What does this mean? The world created with the sins they had committed had to come to an end, and a new world needed to be created again. This is why Jesus worked on the Sabbath.
When the work of re-creation is complete God will enter the true Sabbath. God and Jesus complete this work in Revelation, and from this time, at last, they will rest (they will enter the Sabbath). Amen.
