국민의힘 김문수 대선 후보(presidential candidate)가 자신을 축출하려(oust him) 했던 당 지도부를 포용하기로 하고, 새 비상대책위원장에 최연소 의원인 1990년생 초선 김용태(35) 의원을 내정하는 등 본격적인 ‘빅 텐트’ 치기에 나섰다(put up a full-fledged “Big Tent”).

그러자 다른 곳에 천막을 치려 했던(pitch their own tent) 인사들조차 “오로지 단합(unity)과 통합(integration)만이 승리의 길”이라며 텐트 안으로 들어와 “9회 말 투아웃 역전 만루 홈런(bottom-of-the-ninth, two-out, grand slam) 대역전극을 이뤄내자(pull off a dramatic come-from-behind victory)”고 화답했다.

‘빅 텐트’는 서커스 용어였다. 한자리에 다양한 공연을 펼쳐 대중을 끌어모으던 대형 천막이 어원이다. 이 ‘빅 텐트’ 안에서는 공중곡예(aerial acrobatics)부터 광대놀이(clown acts), 동물 묘기(animal tricks)까지 온갖 기교가 시너지를 냈다.

그랬던 것이 20세기 중반 미국 정치권에서 선거 전략 용어로 차용됐다(be adopted). 여러 분파를 하나의 정당 내에 결속시키는 타협(compromise)과 연합(coalition)을 묘사하는 개념으로 쓰이기 시작했다.

대표적인 예(representative example)로는 제16대 대통령 에이브러햄 링컨을 들 수 있다. 공화당 후보였던 그는 흑인 노예 해방(emancipation of Black slaves), 인권 등을 주장하는 진보 인사들까지 포용해(embrace progressive figures) 공화당을 보수와 진보를 아우르는 빅 텐트 정당으로 세웠다.

로널드 레이건 전 대통령도 한 예로 꼽힌다. 보수주의자(conservative)와 자유주의자(liberal), 종교인(religious)과 세속주의자(secularist), 도시 엘리트와 지방 농민까지 다양한 세력을 아울러 공산주의·과도한 정부 개입 등 공동의 적에 맞서는(confront common enemies) 큰 텐트 아래 결집시켰다.

ABC방송에 따르면, ‘빅 텐트’ 용어를 대중화시킨(popularize the term) 이는 2016년 대선 민주당 후보 힐러리 클린턴이다. 지나치게 보수적이라는 비판을 극복하기 위해 보수·진보를 한데 묶는 ‘빅 텐트’를 펼쳤고, 그 효과로 전국 득표수에서는 앞섰으나(win the national popular vote), 선거인단 숫자에서 밀려(fall short in the Electoral College) 공화당 후보 도널드 트럼프에게 대통령직을 내줬었다(concede the presidency).

‘그랜드 텐트(Grand Tent)’라는 용어도 있다. ‘빅 텐트’가 한덕수 전 대통령 권한대행과 개혁신당 이준석 후보와도 연대하자는 것이라면, ‘그랜드 텐트’는 민주당 소속이었던 이낙연 전 국무총리와 민주당 내 반(反)이재명 세력(anti-Lee faction)까지 아우르자는 개념이다.

‘포괄 정당’으로 표현하기도 한다. 특정 이념·계층에 국한되지 않는 광범위한 스펙트럼을 표방하는 정당으로, 보수·중도·진보를 모두 잡으려(appeal to conservatives, moderates, and progressives alike) 한다는 뜻에서 영어로는 ‘catch-all party’라고 한다.
