워싱턴 — 포르투갈이 이탈리아 조선업체 핀칸티에리로부터 호위함 3척을 구매할 계획이라고 조르자 멜로니 이탈리아 총리가 오늘 발표했다.

멜로니는 루이스 몬테네그루 포르투갈 총리와 함께한 기자회견에서 “포르투갈이 핀칸티에리의 FREMM EVO 호위함 3척을 구매하기로 결정한 데 대해 매우, 매우 기쁘게 생각한다.”라고 말했다. 그는 이어 “이는 이탈리아 방위산업에 대한 인정인 동시에, 유럽이 자국의 기술 역량과 기업에 투자함으로써 어떻게 자율성을 강화할 수 있는지를 보여주는 사례다. 또한 이는 해양 분야에서 우리가 더욱 긴밀히 협력할 기회라고 생각한다.”라고 밝혔다.

핀칸티에리 대변인은 이번 보도에 대한 논평을 거부했다. CNN 포르투갈은 지난해 12월 처음으로 계약 체결이 임박했다고 보도했으며, 오늘 몬테네그루 총리의 말을 인용해 계약 규모가 약 39억 유로, 미화 46억 달러에 이를 것이라고 전했다.

핀칸티에리는 자사 웹사이트에서 FREMM EVO를 두 가지 파생형으로 구성된 기존 FREMM 프로그램의 “진화형”으로 소개하고 있다. 이 함정은 길이 144미터이며, 최대 지속 속도는 27노트, 시속 31마일을 넘는다.

회사는 “새로운 함정 2척은 기술과 성능 모두에서 방어 함정의 최전선에 서게 될 것이며, 최근 프로그램에서 이미 달성한 주요 기술 발전을 바탕으로 세 가지 영역에 걸친 최신 대드론 체계와 무인체계를 통합해 능력을 더욱 향상시킬 것”이라고 밝혔다.

WASHINGTON — Portugal plans to purchase three frigates from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced today.

“I am very, very pleased regarding Portugal’s decision to buy three FREMM EVO frigates from Fincantieri,” Meloni said during a press conference alongside Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. “It is a recognition of Italian defense industry but also of how Europe can reinforce its autonomy by investing in its own technological capacity and companies. I also think this is an opportunity for us to work closer within the maritime domain.

A spokesperson for Fincantieri declined to comment for this report. CNN Portugal first reported in December that a deal was coming, and today quoted Montenegro as saying it would be worth nearly €3.9 billion ($4.6 billion).

Fincantieri bills the FREMM EVO as the “evolution” of its original FREMM program coming in two variants, according to the shipbuilder’s website. The ships are 144 meters (472 feet) long, with a max continuous speed of over 27 knots (31 mph).

“The two new units will be at the forefront of defense vessels, both in terms of technology and performance, building on the main technological developments already achieved in recent programs and further improving capabilities through the integration of the latest anti-drone and unmanned systems across three domains,” the company says.
