트럼프 미국 대통령의 집권 1기 First Buddy는 그의 책사(tactician)로 불렸던 스티브 배넌 전 백악관 수석 전략가(chief strategist)였고, 집권 2기 현재의 First Buddy는 일론 머스크 테슬라 최고경영자(CEO)다. 머스크와는 지나칠 정도로 어울려 ‘백악관 브로맨스’라는 표현까지 등장했다.

그런데 최근 급격히 소원해진(become alienated) 징후가 곳곳에서 감지된다. 극비 군사기밀 접근 논란, 정책 노선 차이, 내부 권력 다툼(internal power struggle)이 복합적으로 작용했다는 분석이 나온다. 배넌은 뉴욕타임스 인터뷰에서 “트럼프와 머스크의 브로맨스에 균열이 가기 시작한 건 머스크가 중국과의 가상 전쟁 비밀 계획에 접근하려 한(gain access to the classified plans) 시도가 전환점(turning point)이 됐다”고 밝혔다.

얼마 전 트럼프는 정부효율부 수장을 맡고 있는 머스크에게 중국과의 가상 전쟁(hypothetical war) 극비 자료를 보여주지 않기로 결정했다. 사업적 이해관계로 중국과 연계돼 있다며 민감한 군사 정보는 공유할 수 없다고 선을 그은 것이다. 이로 인해 두 사람의 신뢰와 협력은 금이 가고 급기야 사그라들기(crack and eventually go up in flames) 시작했다. 머스크는 국방부의 예산 낭비(budget waste), 사기(fraud), 남용(abuse) 조사라는 명분을 내세웠으나, 군사기밀 접근 논란이 불거지면서 내부 불신이 커졌다(fuel growing internal distrust).
