SEOUL, Dec. 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's consumer sentiment fell by the largest margin since the COVID-19 pandemic in December as political turmoil sparked by President Yoon Suk Yeol's shocking martial law declaration added another layer of uncertainty to the economy, a central bank poll showed Tuesday.

The composite consumer sentiment index stood at 88.4 this month, down 12.3 points from the previous month's 100.7, according to the survey conducted by the Bank of Korea (BOK).
​
December's figure is the lowest level since November 2022 when the index came to 86.6.
​
It also logged the sharpest decline since March 2020, when the index fell by 18.3 points.
​
A reading above 100 means optimists outnumber pessimists.
"It was the third consecutive monthly fall. The martial law incident appeared to have affected the sentiment, which had already worsened after the U.S. presidential election and growth concerns," a BOK official said.

Political chaos has dented the economy and the market following Yoon's imposition of martial law on Dec. 3 and the subsequent vote by the National Assembly to impeach him.
​
The stock market had tumbled to a yearly low earlier this month, and the Korean currency dipped to the lowest level in more than 15 years and has stayed around the 1,450 won level against the U.S. dollar.
​
In an effort to stabilize the markets, financial authorities have vowed to inject "unlimited liquidity" and implement all options available.
​
The martial law debacle came at a time when the country is projected to log slower economic growth in 2025 than this year on weak exports and sagging domestic demand.
​
The BOK expected the South Korean economy to expand 1.9 percent next year, slowing from this year's 2.2 percent expansion in 2024.
​
Adding to woes is U.S. policy changes under the new Donald Trump administration, as the president-elect has vowed to impose high tariffs on imported goods and to implement a series of protectionist measures.
Ordinary people expected consumer prices to rise 2.9 percent for the year ahead, up from the previous month's 2.8 percent, the BOK said.

서울, 12월 24일 (연합뉴스) -- 윤석열 대통령의 충격적인 계엄령 선포로 촉발된 정치적 혼란으로 경제에 또 다른 불확실성이 더해지면서 한국의 소비자 심리가 12월 코로나19 팬데믹 이후 가장 큰 폭으로 하락한 것으로 화요일 중앙은행 여론조사에서 나타났습니다.

한국은행이 실시한 설문조사에 따르면, 이번 달 종합 소비자심리지수는 88.4로 전월의 100.7보다 12.3포인트 하락했습니다.

12월 수치는 지수가 86.6을 기록한 2022년 11월 이후 가장 낮은 수준입니다.

또한 지수가 18.3포인트 하락한 2020년 3월 이후 가장 큰 폭의 하락세를 기록했습니다.

수치가 100을 넘으면 낙관론자가 비관론자보다 많다는 뜻입니다.

"3개월 연속 하락했습니다. 계엄령 사건이 미국 대선과 성장 우려 이후 이미 악화된 심리에 영향을 미친 것으로 보입니다."라고 한국은행 관계자는 말했습니다.

정치적 혼란은 12월 3일 윤 장관의 계엄령 선포와 이후 국회의 탄핵 표결 이후 경제와 시장을 위축시켰습니다.

이달 초 주식 시장이 연중 최저치로 떨어졌고, 한국 통화는 15년 만에 최저 수준으로 떨어졌으며 미국 달러 대비 1,450원대를 유지하고 있습니다.

시장 안정을 위해 금융 당국은 "무한 유동성"을 도입하고 가능한 모든 옵션을 시행하겠다고 약속했습니다.

계엄령 붕괴는 수출 부진과 내수 침체로 인해 2025년 경제 성장률이 올해보다 둔화될 것으로 예상되는 시점에 발생했습니다.

한국은행은 내년 한국 경제가 올해의 2.2% 성장에서 둔화된 1.9% 성장할 것으로 예상했습니다.

트럼프 대통령 당선인이 수입품에 높은 관세를 부과하고 일련의 보호무역 조치를 시행하겠다고 공언한 도널드 트럼프 새 행정부 하에서 미국의 정책 변화가 우려를 더하고 있습니다.

일반인들은 소비자 물가가 전월의 2.8%에서 올해 2.9% 상승할 것으로 예상했다고 한국은행은 밝혔습니다.
