2Timoty 1:7 For
God did not give us a spirit of
timidity, but a spirit of
power, of love and of
self-discipline
The
movie <Life is beautiful>
[A Spirit of Timidity]
1. About Himself.
a. He was a mixed blood
Acts
16:1 He
came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a
believer, but whose father was a Greek.
b. He was a young man
1Timothy 4:12 Don't
let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the
believers in speech, in life, in love,
in faith and in purity
c. He was a weakling
1Timothy 5:23 Stop
drinking only water,
and use a little wine because
of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
d. He was a sentimental
1Timothy 1:4 Recalling
your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be
filled with joy.
2. About the gospel
2Timothy 1:8 So
do not be ashamed to
testify about our Lord, or ashamed of
me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for
the gospel, by the power of God,
1Timothy 1:3-4 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there
in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any
longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote
controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith
1Timothy 4:1~2 The
Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow
deceiving spirits
and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars,
whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
1Timothy 6:3~5 If
anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of
our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands
nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words
that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant
friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who
think thatgodliness is a
means to financial gain.
2Timothy 1:12 That
is why I am suffering as I
am. Yet I am not ashamed,
because I know whom I have
believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to
him for that day
3. About His Mentor
a. He was a prisoner
2Timothy 1:8
2Timothy 2:8-9 Remember
Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel,
for which I am suffering even
to the point of being chained like a criminal. But
God's word is not chained.
2Timothy 1:16 May
the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,
because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of
my chains.
b. Many deserted him
2Timothy 1:15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted
me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
2Timothy 4:16 At
my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me.
May it not be held against them
c. He was not good at speaking
2Corinthians 11:6 I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear
to you in every way.
False
teachers
1Timothy 1:3-4 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there
in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any
longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote
controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith.
6:20-21 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care.
Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called
knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the
faith. Grace be with you.
d. He was about to die
2Timothy 4:6 For
I am already being poured out like a drink
offering, and the time has come for my departure.
[A Spirit of Power]
1. Join in suffering for the
gospel
2Timothy 1:8 So
do not be ashamed to
testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me
his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for
the gospel, by the power of God
2. Endure hardship
2Timothy 4:5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure
hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your
ministry.
3. Fight the good fight
4. Be kind to everyone
2Timothy 2:24-25 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he
must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he
must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading
them to a knowledge of the truth,
5. Continue in the faith
2Timothy 3:14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and
have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,
