Despite having the perfect opportunity for revenge, Aksionov refuses to betray Makar, stating it is not God's will for him to speak. Overwhelmed by guilt, shame, and Aksionov's incredible act of grace, Makar sneaks into Aksionov's cell that night. Weeping, he begs for forgiveness and confesses that he was the true murderer. Makar then formally confesses his crime to the authorities so that Aksionov can be pardoned and return home to his family. However, by the time the official order for Aksionov's release finally arrives, he has already died in peace, having ultimately found his spiritual freedom and trusting that God has seen the truth. ```
