A Magpie’s Nest

To build a single nest
Where she will lay her eggs and raise her young,
A magpie must fly with a branch in her beak
More than a thousand times,
Gathering over two thousand twigs.

She brings one branch,
Sets it into place,
Then takes it away again.

Without even pausing
To wipe the sweat from her brow,
The magpie flies off once more,
Joyfully, tirelessly,
To make a warm, cozy home
For her chicks yet to come.

With powerful wings,
She cuts through the blue sky
In bright excitement.

On the persimmon tree
At the edge of my yard,
With barely granted permission,
She has been building her nest
For several days now.

Will she invite me
When everything is finished?
If she does,
I will gladly go.

As a housewarming gift,
I’ll bring toilet paper
So that all may go smoothly,
And a bar of soap
So that her fortune may grow
Like rising bubbles.

Why can’t people
Be as wise as the magpie?

So many exhaust themselves
Borrowing beyond their means.

Magpie, when your busy work is done,
Could you teach them
A little thrift?

까치가 새끼를 낳아 기르기 위해

집 한 채 지으려면

천 번 이상 나뭇가지를 물고 날라야 하고

이천 개 이상의 나뭇가지가 필요하다고 하네

나뭇가지 하나 물고 와 집을 짓고

다시 나뭇가지 물러 가는 까치

까치는 새끼에게

아늑하고 포근한 집 한 채 지어주려고

이마의 땀을 닦지도 않고

다시 기쁘게 날아가네

힘차게 날개 짓하며

푸른 하늘을 신나게 날아가네

우리 집 마당귀 감나무

감나무의 허락을 간신히 받아

벌써 여러 날째 집을 짓고 있는 까치

까치가 집을 다 지으면 나도 초대해 주려나?

초대해 주기만 하면 기꺼이 가겠네

집들이 선물로 미리부터

술술 잘 풀리라고 휴지를 준비하고

거품처럼 부자 되라고 비누를 준비하겠네

사람들은 까치처럼 좀 안 되나?

영끌 한방에만 온힘을 쏟는 사람들 불러모아

까치야, 바쁜 일 끝나면 알뜰살뜰 좀 가르쳐주면 안 되겠니?
