child abuse is the improper actiona that the parents
does to their children. we know, US
restricts the educational action of adult toward children.
altought everyone calls America as a free land, US once
had a national law of mistreating children ans women.
for example, children lost their rights in speech
toward adults as what we (korean) have been doing
troughout our entire life. few years later, US governemt
suddenly changes their law and started to support
to protect children and their rights, and deny those
who do same action as they did in the past, without all
respect. Americans do not have rights to emphasize
the child abuse in other country such as south korea
because they also have done the same action toward the
children.

--------------------- [원본 메세지] ---------------------
I've been beaten by my parents when I was a child. It was a type of beating that went on for at least an hour. After the beating and scolding, everything is back to normal. I did what I was told not to do and the cycle continued. Was I abused as a child? No, since I ignored my parents' request. Is this an act of child abuse in American's eyes? Yes it is. Unfortunately definition of child-abuse differs in various society. So what is the definition of child-abuse in Korea? Teachers' ego trip on their students? Abusive language? How about what Ken Cheng mentioned in the other letter concerning surgery done to a child of 5? Is this an act of a child-abuse?
In my opinion, Korean parents are obsessed with their children's education. Kid goto school in the morning, to an institution in the afternoon then a private tutor for the rest of the time. Most members of my family in Korea are basically following what others are doing for their children. I met with some of these nephews and nieces and found them very different. Maybe they were different because I was different, but I find them interesting when they spoke about their "hok won" and how theirs was better than the others. These kids were 7-9 years old.
All my uncles and aunt told me that in order to survive in Korean society, their children had to be "better" than the other kids. I had to chuckle with that answer. This phenominone is growing by the day. Out of control? Maybe, maybe not. The fact that an article about "tongue surgery" made it to a newspaper gives me some sanity for the reporter found this to be insane.
How the readers will interpret the article maybe be different. I'm sure that some mothers will seek the surgeons for their children due to the article.
What's child-abuse? Child abuse is any mental or physical harm that was enacted to a minor resulting permanent damage, either physically or psychologically or the most general term, usually implies the anger of the speaker and stresses the harshness of the language to a minor. Too vague? Maybe so, but it should make you stop and think about what you are doing to your children. Smart kids does not really mean happy kids. I predict that there will be a demand for Psychologist in Korea's future.
