I urge you to send in your comments about the planned increased militarization of Guam via the draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Study released April 2014. We were given 60 days to respond. Please do so asap.
This planned military build up is nothing but negative consequences to our people's health and our small island home. Two of Guam's villages that have the highest incidences of deaths from cancers are Yigo and Santa Rita, both right outside the military bases. The second leading cause of death on Guam is from cancers. Guam rates 87% more naso-pharaengel cancers than the standard population in the U.S. The US military controls more lands (29%) than all private landowners combined. The DOD reported over 95 toxic sites at AAFB and NavStation and does not include FUDS (formerly used defense sites). There are 19 superfund sites on Guam--without political voice in Washington, D.C. we will never get appropriations to clean up these contaminated areas.
