Kim Heejung's New Solo Exhibition: "Dreams, Memories, and Life"

Artist Kim Heejung's new solo exhibition, "Dreams, Memories, and Life," is set to open. This exhibition is the culmination of the artist's prolonged artistic exploration and profound philosophical reflection, posing deep questions to the audience about dreams, memories, and reality.

Through this exhibition, Kim Heejung raises fundamental questions about how we perceive the world – specifically, the concepts of 'truth and fact.' The artist delves into the persistent question of whether we, living in the same era, truly share the same experiences, much like the query, "When two people stand and look at the same place, do we actually see the same thing? Do we see the same form and the same color?" Kim's works embody humanity's limitation in fully comprehending others' perspectives and experiences, and even the introspection that what one perceives oneself can sometimes be uncertain, all stemming from the artist's own deep contemplation.

Notably, the artist has maintained a deep fascination with and exploration of the night sky's stars since childhood. Having fostered a yearning for cosmic existence and unknown worlds through stars, Kim now channels that infinite imagination through the medium of painting. The artist's imagination—that the stars we see now may not be their actual appearance in the universe, and that other life forms might exist in unseen places—offers viewers a new perspective on the cosmos and life.

The artworks presented in this exhibition are "the world as the artist sees it," born from decades of artistic activity. The image of a child in the works is the artist's self-portrait, symbolizing the awkwardness of human beings who, throughout their lives, always navigate a "world that is new for the first time." Though the body shows the wisdom of age, experiences are always new and clumsy. Thus, by expressing her inner state as a child, the artist seeks to foster deep empathy with the audience. Kim shares her personal experiences through her works, hoping that viewers will reflect on their own life experiences and contemplate the images etched in their minds while appreciating the art.

Artist's Statement: Dreams, Memories, and Life

Things seen in dreams, things seen through travel, and thus things remaining in memory. The things I'm doing now. Reflection on truth and fact...

When two people stand and look at the same place, do we actually see the same thing? Do we see the same form and the same color? I've always questioned this. Living in the same era, do we truly have the same experiences? No one can definitively say it's the same or different. Because I don't know what others see, and I can only know what I see and think. Even what I claim to see often isn't certain...

The world I've been interested in since I was young was the stars in the night sky. Real stars floating in the sky... My memory is so faint now that I don't even know why I came to love stars. I just wanted to do something related to stars, whether it was becoming an astronaut or studying astronomy. After becoming a painter, it was a natural progression to paint stars.

I still love stars. Although more excellent telescopes have been developed now, allowing for detailed observation of stars, that won't be the end. I believe the stars we see now are not the actual appearance of the universe. People say there's no life on other stars, but isn't it just that we can't see it?

The works exhibited here are the world as I've conceived it, gradually painted over decades of my life as an artist. The image of the child is my self-portrait. Throughout our lives, we always live in a world that is new for the first time. Every experience is a first, and so we are clumsy. Our bodies show age, but the things we experience are always new. So, even if the body is old, we are always clumsy, like children, in the face of new experiences. That's why I've expressed my innermost state, as I feel it.

I want to share my personal experiences with you through my work. I hope that while appreciating my art, each of you, the audience, will also have an opportunity to reflect on your own life experiences and the images etched in your hearts.

Artist Biography: Kim Heejung

Artist Kim Heejung immigrated to the U.S. in 1989, earning her MFA from the State University of New York and an MA in Art Education from the University of Illinois. She taught at New Jersey City University for 14 years and currently lectures in studio art at William Paterson University and Raritan Valley Community College. She has participated in 25 solo exhibitions and over 90 group exhibitions both in the U.S. and internationally. Kim Heejung's works are held in collections at institutions such as the Princeton University Art Museum and the Asian American Arts Centre. Numerous articles about her exhibitions and works have been featured in prominent U.S. newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times.

김희정 작가의 신작 개인전 "꿈과 기억과 인생"이 개최됩니다. 이번 전시는 작가의 오랜 예술적 탐구와 심오한 철학적 사유가 집약된 결과물로, 관객들에게 꿈, 기억, 그리고 현실에 대한 깊이 있는 질문을 던진다.

김희정 작가는 이번 전시를 통해 우리가 세상을 인지하는 방식, 즉 '진실과 사실'에 대한 근원적인 물음을 제기하고 있다. "둘이 서서 같은 곳을 바라볼 때, 우리는 과연 같은 것을 보는 걸까? 같은 형상과 같은 색을 보고 있는 걸까?"라는 질문처럼, 작가는 동시대를 살아가는 우리가 과연 같은 경험을 하고 있는지에 대한 끊임없는 의문을 작품에 담아낸다. 타인의 시각과 경험을 온전히 알 수 없는 인간의 한계, 심지어 스스로가 인지하는 것조차 때로는 불확실하다는 성찰은 작가 개인의 깊은 사유에서 시작된다.

특히 작가는 어린 시절부터 밤하늘의 별에 대한 깊은 애착과 탐구를 이어왔다. 별을 통해 우주적 존재와 미지의 세계에 대한 동경을 키워온 작가는, 이제 그림이라는 매체를 통해 그 무한한 상상력을 펼쳐내고 있다. 우리가 지금 보는 별들이 우주의 실재하는 모습이 아닐 수도 있으며, 보이지 않는 곳에 다른 생명체가 존재할 수도 있다는 작가의 상상력은 관객들에게 우주와 생명에 대한 새로운 시각을 보여준다..

이번 전시에 선보이는 작품들은 작가의 수십 년에 걸친 예술 활동 속에서 탄생한 '작가가 생각한 세상'이다. 작품 속 어린아이의 모습은 작가의 자화상으로, 평생을 살면서 언제나 '처음인 세상'을 살아가는 인간의 서투른 모습을 상징한다. 몸은 연륜을 보이지만 겪는 일들은 항상 새롭고 서툴기에, 작가는 자신의 심연의 상태를 어린아이의 모습으로 표현함으로써 관객들과 깊은 공감을 나누고자 한다. 작가는 자신의 개인적인 경험을 작품을 통해 공유하며, 관객들이 작품을 감상하는 동안 각자의 인생 경험을 되돌아보고 마음에 각인된 형상에 대해 사유하는 기회를 갖기를 기대한다.

꿈과 기억과 인생:

꿈속에서 본 것들, 여행을 통해 본 것들, 그래서 기억 속에 남은 것들. 지금 하고있는 일들. 진실과 사실에 대한 고찰….

둘이 서서 같은 곳을 바라볼 때, 우리는 과연 같을 것을 보는걸까? 같은 형상과 같은 색을 보고 있는걸까? 이것에 대해 항상 의문을 가졌다. 동시대를 살면서 과연 우리는 같은 경험을 하는 걸까? 아무도 같다고도 다르다고 단언 할 수 없을 것이다. 왜냐면 남들이 무엇을 보는지 모르고, 단지 내가보고 생각하는 것 밖엔 도저히 알 수 없기 때문이다. 그 내가 본다고 하는 것 조차 어떨 땐 사실인지 모를 때가 많으므로……

내가 어렸을 때부터 관심있게 본 세상은 밤하늘의 별들이었다. 진짜 하늘에 떠있는 별들…. 지금은 기억조차 희미해서 내가 왜 별을 좋아하게 됐는지 나도 모른다. 그냥 우주인이 되든, 천문학을 공부하든, 별에 관계되는 일을 하고 싶었다.  그림 그리는 사람이 된 이후론 별을 그리게 된 건 당연한 수순이다.

난 지금도 별이 좋다. 지금은 옛날에 비해 더 훌륭한 망원경이 만들어져서 별들을 자세히 관찰하게 되었지만 그게 끝은 아닐 것이다. 지금 우리가 보는 별들이, 우주에 실재하는 우주의 모습은 아닐거라 생각한다. 다른 별엔 생명체가 없다고들 하지만, 그건 단지 우리 눈에 보이지 않을 뿐이지 않을까?

여기 전시된 내 작품들은 작가 생활 수십년동안 차차 그려낸 내가 생각한 세상이다. 어린 아이의 모습은 내 자화상이다. 우리는 평생을 살면서 언제나 처음인 세상을 산다. 언제나 첫경험이고 그래서 서툴다. 몸은 연륜을 보이지만 우리가 겪게 되는 일들은 항상 처음이다. 그래서 몸은 늙었어도 겪게 되는 일에는 늘 어린아이처럼 서툴다. 그래서 내 심연의 상태를, 내가 느끼는 대로 표현했다.

나의 개인적인 경험을, 작품을 통해 여러분과 나누고 싶다. 내 작품을 감상하는 동안, 관객 여러분 또한 각자의 인생경험을 통해, 마음에 각인된 형상을, 한번쯤 생각하는 기회가 되길 바란다.

작가 간단소개

김희정 작가는 1989년에 도미하여 뉴욕주립대에서 미술석사와 일리노이대학에서 미술교육 석사를 졸업하였으며, 뉴저지시티대학에서 14년간 교편을 잡았고, 현재는 윌리엄 페터슨 대학과 래리탄밸리커뮤니티칼리지에서 미술실기강의를 하고있다. 전시는 미국내와 해외에서25번의 개인전과 90여번의 그룹전에 참가하였다. 김희정 작가의 작품은 프린스턴 대학 뮤지엄, 아시안 어메리칸 아트센터 등에 소장되었다. 뉴욕타임즈등 미국 저명한 신문과 잡지에 전시와 작품에 대한 기사가 다수 기재되었다.

김희정의 '마인드스케이프(Mindscapes)'는 기억과 우주, 그리고 일상의 보이지 않는 시적 순간들을 따라가는 명상적 여정으로 초대합니다.

김희정 작가는 뉴저지 북부 포트리 지역에 거주하며, 자신의 갤러리도 이 근처에 위치한 다재다능한 멀티미디어 작가이다. 작고 우아한 전시 공간을 채우기 위해, 김 작가는 모든 작품을 벽면에 배치했다. 작품은 검은 종이를 배경으로 삼고, 그 위에 별처럼 빛나는 작은 점들이 일정한 패턴을 형성하거나 혹은 무작위로 흩뿌려져 있는 형식이었다.

깊은 암흑과 미세한 빛의 대비는 그 자체로도 시각적으로 아름답다. 그러나 그 평면적인 어둠과 그 위에 박힌 작은 빛의 폭발 사이에 강력한 연결 고리를 찾기란 어렵다. 또한, 김 작가의 작품에서 한국적인 문화 계보를 직접적으로 읽어내기는 힘들다. 오히려 그녀의 작업은 후기 모더니즘의 미학에 속해 있으며, 이는 고전이라기보다는 현대 예술의 전통을 계승한 결과로 볼 수 있다. 이 선택은 그녀의 작품에 뚜렷한 영향을 미치지만, 더 이상 그 출발점이었던 서유럽에만 귀속되지는 않는다. 김 작가가 구사하는 스타일은 이제 전 세계적 예술 언어의 일부가 되었으며, 근대 미술의 초기 원류와 직접적인 연관성을 갖는다고 보긴 어렵다.

실제로 김 작가의 작품에 대해 특정한 아시아적 영향력을 논하는 것은 그리 설득력이 없다. 그녀의 미학 중심에는 '움직이는 미니멀리즘(moving minimalism)'이 자리하고 있다. 미니멀리즘은 미국에서 출발했지만 빠르게 국제적 양상을 띠었고, 이제는 중국, 한국, 일본 등 동아시아에서도 널리 받아들여지고 있다. 물론 완전히 서구적 시각에서 자유롭지는 않지만, 동양에서도 공감되고 수용되는 언어가 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 작품 안에는 어렴풋이 아시아적인 정서가 스며들어 있다. 포트리는 맨해튼 인근의 아시아 커뮤니티 중심지이며, 전시된 작품들은 별을 넘어, 불교 승려가 명상 중 떠올릴 법한 상상력을 불러일으키는 사유적 분위기를 자아낸다.

작품 속의 작은 빛은 우리가 알고 있는 자연의 일부를 표현하는 동시에, 검은 종이는 무한히 펼쳐진 상상의 공간을 상징한다. 이 작업은 상상력의 거의 무한한 확장을 은유하는 시각적 메타포로 기능한다. 단순히 감각적인 경험을 넘어, 관객의 인식과 사유를 자극하는 이러한 표현은 감동적이며, 우리의 인식을 넓혀준다. 극도로 작고 동시에 거대한 것을 암시함으로써, 김 작가는 관객의 관심을 효과적으로 끌어낸다. 그녀의 예술은 단순한 묘사를 넘어 메타포로 기능하며, 철학적 성찰로 우리를 이끈다. 검은 종이 위에서 반짝이는 별빛은 단순한 시각적 표현이 아닌, 내면의 사유와 명상을 자극하는 장치이다.

김 작가는 철학자에 가까운 예술가다. 그녀의 작업은 관객으로 하여금 깊이 있는 사고를 유도하며, 무한한 우주적 공간을 통해 사유의 지평을 확장시킨다. 요약하자면, 예술은 언제나 지적인 표현이자 동시에 세계를 기술하는 도구였다. 김 작가는 이러한 진실을 내면 깊이 간직하고 있는 의식적인 작가이다.

또 다른 작품에서는 곡선 형태의 리본 같은 붓질이 작고 순수한 색채 조각들과 겹쳐지며 구성된다. 이는 일종의 '회화적 콘페티(painted confetti)'처럼 보이는데, 작고 정제된 요소들과 대담한 곡선의 대비를 통해, 미시적인 것과 거시적인 것을 동시에 조망하게 한다. 이러한 시각적 대비와 철학적 깊이는 김 작가가 우리에게 제안하는 ‘확장된 시야’의 일부로서, 기억에 남을 만한 예술적 경험을 만들어낸다.
