1. 허리케인 윌마가 쿠바를 강타하며 폭풍해일로 인한 대규모 피해가 발생했습니다. 특히 해안가에서 상당한 침수사태가 발생했습니다. 쿠바 아바나의 모습을 전합니다.

2. 파도가 아바나 모로성 (Morro Castle)의 등대마저 무너뜨릴 기세로 몰아칩니다. 12년 전 쿠바에 몰아친 강력한 폭풍을 겪었던 이들도, 이번 "허리케인 윌마"의 기세엔 그저 놀랄 뿐입니다. 허리케인 윌마로 인한 폭풍해일로 아바나의 거리엔 눈깜짝 할 사이에 바닷물이 밀려들어왔습니다. 이 여성은 한밤 중에 지하의 아파트에서 간신히 대피했다고 합니다. "바닷물이 매우 빨리 도시로 차올라 놀랐다"고 그는 말합니다.

3. 쿠바의 민방위대는 물에 띄울 수 있는 것은 모두 이용해, 인명을 구조하고 있습니다. 군은 구소련제 수륙양용 차량으로 구조를 거들며, 약탈범들도 체포하고 있습니다. 이번 폭풍해일로 약 16킬로미터의 해안가 지역이 침수됐습니다. 도시 전반에 걸쳐 침수가 진행됐으며 5번가의 터널과 아바나 외곽의 산타페 지역도 마찬가집니다. 이 지역에선 가옥이 모두 물에 잠겼습니다.

4. 미용사인 "일레나"와 함께 그의 집을 찾아 봤습니다. 일레나의 전 재산은 물에 잠겨버렸습니다. "모두 물에 잠겨 성한 것이 하나도 없지만, 그래도 이 곳에서 살아가야 한다"라고 그는 말합니다. 군인들은 소파까지도 물에서 건져내고 있습니다. 쿠바에선 일생에 한번 살 정도의 귀중품이기 때문입니다.

5. 이 곳의 사람들은 썰물을 이용해 물을 건너고 있습니다. 그러나 여전히 물살이 세며, 몇 시간 후엔 수위가 다시 상승할 겁니다. 환자와 노인 및 어린이를 구조해 내는 일은 시간과의 싸움입니다. 넉넉치 않은 살림의 아바나 시민들은 한 가지 세간살이라도 더 건져내려고 애쓰고 있습니다.

2. The waves nearly reached the top of Havana's Morro Castle lighthouse. No one had ever seen anything like it, not even what Cubans call the "Storm of the Century" twelve years ago. Wilma's storm surge turning the cities avenues and streets into salt water rivers in a blink of the eye. Donna Raquel barely had time to get out of her basement apartment in the middle of the night. "It was very quick, very fast, the sea is full of surprises" she says.

3. Cuba's Civil Defense is using boats and anything else that floats to rescue people, while the army joins in with Soviet made amphibious vessels. These alleged looters were among the passengers. The flooding extends all along the shoreline for at least 10 miles. From downtown to midtown, to the 5th avenue tunnel, to the Santa Fe area on the city's outskirts where these homes were covered by the water.

4. Elana, a hairdresser, takes us to see where she lives. Everything she owns is now under water. "Down there, there's nothing left, not even the walls, but I have to keep on living there" she says. These soliders rescue a sofa. In Cuba items like these are too often once in a lifetime purchases, impossible for many to ever replace.

5. These people are taking advantage of low tide to cross here, the current is very very strong and in a few hours the water level will go up again. It's a race against time to get the sick, the young, and the elderly to dry ground. To save as much of what's still salvageable in a country where people already have very little.
