15. 서울에서 법을 펼치다, Spreading the Dharma in Seoul

[眞如華]

날짜로만 봐도 강행군의 강행군인 법회들이 열렸다. 이때마다 청중들이 차고 넘쳤다. 모두가 그 법회에 와서 눈물바람을 하였다. 그러다가 연꽃 같은 웃음을 지었다.

이렇게 강행군을 하는 데는 2009년 4월부터 11월까지 불교방송 무상사에서 열린 『법화경』법회가 큰 버팀목이 되었다.

매주 법회가 열리기 전부터 법회가 끝난 후까지 무상사에는 ‘큰스님을 더 가까이 뵙고 싶은’ 신도들이 몰려왔다. 무비스님의 법회 대기실은 늘 사람들로 가득했다.

무비스님은 여전히 불편하고 아픈 몸을 이끌고 부산에서 서울 서초동으로 일주일에 한 번씩 법문을 하러 상경을 했다.

무비스님도, 청중도 그해 34주 동안 크게 아프지도 않고, 넘어지지도 않고, 『법화경』 법문을 다 같이 ‘행복하게’ 소화해냈다. 모두에게 놀라운 경험이었다.

서초동의 무상사 뿐만이 아니었다.

2년 뒤인 2011년 봉은사에서 ‘당신은 부처님’이라는 주제로 매달 『법화경』 법회가 2년간 열렸다.

선교율 법회에서 ‘교’에 해당하는 법회를 무비스님이 맡은 것이다.

‘선과 교가 하나다’라는 무비스님의 신념이 법회를 융성하게 했다.

무비스님의 병고 이후에 인연이 된 사람들이 매달 그 법회를 찾아왔다.

무비스님의 법회 대기실로 쓰인 다래헌에서 법회가 열리는 법왕루까지 무비스님은 한결같이 단정한 모습으로 지팡이를 짚고 꼿꼿이 걸어갔다. 수많은 사람들이 그 뒤를 따라서 걸었다. 그러느라 24개월 동안 『화엄경』경판을 모신 봉은사 <판전> 앞에 눈이 쌓이고 봄꽃이 피고 햇빛이 찬란하고 낙

엽이 지는 풍경을 다 같이 지켜봤다.

『법화경』속에 이미 『화엄경』이 꽃피고 있었다.

Just looking at the dates, they were held on a very tight schedule.

Every single time, the audience was overflowing.

Everyone at the Dharma lectures shed many tears. But then, they all showed beautiful smiles, just like blooming lotus flowers.

The Lotus Sutra lectures held at BBS Musangsa from April to November 2009 gave him the strength to keep up with this busy schedule.

Every week, from before the lectures started until it ended, followers flocked to Musangsa Temple to see the Great Seunim up close.

Mubi Seunim’s waiting room was always full of people.

Even though Mubi Seunim was in pain and not feeling well, he traveled from Busan to Seoul once a week to give his Dharma lectures.

For all 34 weeks that year, neither Mubi Seunim nor the audience got sick or had any accidents. Together, they happily finished the entire journey of the Lotus Sutra teachings.

It was an amazing experience for everyone.

But it wasn't just at Musangsa in Seocho-dong.

Two years later, in 2011, another series of Lotus Sutra lectures began at Bongeunsa Temple. These monthly lectures continued for two years under the theme, 'You Are a Buddha’.

During the Dharma lectures covering the three pillars of Buddhism—Meditation, Teachings, and Precepts—Mubi Seunim was in charge of the 'Teachings'.

Mubi Seunim’s belief that 'Meditation and Teachings are one' made the lectures very successful.

People who had connected with Mubi Seunim after his illness came to the lectures every month.

Mubi Seunim walked from Daraeheon, which was used as Master Mubi’s waiting room, to the Beopwangnu hall where the lecture was held. Even with his walking stick, he always walked straight and looked very neat and dignified.

Many people followed behind him.

As they did this for 24 months, they all watched the seasons change in front of Panjeon Hall at Bongeunsa Temple. Where the ‘Avatamsaka Sutra’ woodblocks are kept, they saw snow pile up, spring flowers bloom, brilliant sunlight, and leaves falling.

The ’Avatamsaka Sutra’ was already blooming within the ‘Lotus Sutra’.
