The Poplar Tree, the River, and the Bird

I asked the poplar tree,
“Do you love me, as I love you?”
But it offered no reply,
Only the faint trembling of leaves in the wind.

I asked the river,
“Do you love me, as I love you?”
It did not answer either,
Slipping past me, arm in arm with its own current.

I asked the bird,
“Do you love me, as I love you?”
The bird remained silent too,
Lifting into the sky and leaving nothing behind but air.

그대 날 사랑하는지

미루나무에게 물어보았지요

미루나무는 대답 대신

잎새를 살랑살랑 흔들었지요

내 그대를 사랑하는 것과 같이

그대 날 사랑하는지

강물에게 물어보았지요

강물은 대답 대신

저희끼리 어깨동무하고 무심히 흘렀지요

새에게 물어보았지요

새는 대답 대신

허공에 자취 남기지 않고 날았지요
