The Warriors' Stephen Jackson, former teammates with Jermaine O'Neal of the Pacers, told the media he thinks O'Neal wants to be traded.

"I don't think he has any patience (left), but Jermaine is the ultimate professional," said Jackson.

Whether O'Neal has demanded or requested a trade in his discussions with Pacers management may simply be a matter of semantics. Los Angeles and New York are thought to be the 6-11 All-Star's preferred destinations.

"I talked to him a while back, and he was saying that if he did get traded he would want to go to those two teams," Jackson said. "Isiah and Jermaine are good friends. If it does happen, look out East. Him and (Eddy) Curry in the paint are going to be a monster. But him and Kobe will be a monster, too."

The Pacers appear poised to rebuild, something O'Neal is unlikely to want to be involved with.

"It's going to have to be the perfect deal (to get O'Neal out), because you know from the deal they made with us (landing Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy) it didn't work out for them," Jackson said. "They don't want to make a bad deal again. I think it would have to be a perfect deal.

"Hopefully it works for him because you play so much better when you're somewhere you want to be, in a place where you are wanted. That's why I'm having so much success here, because they've embraced me like a newborn." [READ]

Morey had been the Rockets assistant general manager since April 3, 2006 when he was hired to succeed the retiring Dawson. Dawson was named senior consultant on Thursday.

"It's like your birthday," Morey said. "When the day comes, you feel the same. This was well-designed by Leslie (Alexander, the Rockets owner), Carroll and Dennis (Lindsey, the Rockets vice president for basketball operations)."

Though Thursday's announcement defined who would handle the GM duties, Morey said it had been made clear throughout the NBA that he would be moving into the position.

The Sonics have relayed to interested parties that they are in no hurry to fill those two positions and could wait until next month to conduct interviews.

The key chip in the equation is San Antonio vice president Sam Presti, who has emerged as the No. 1 candidate to replace Rick Sund as general manager. Presti has yet to interview with the Sonics and likely won't until the Spurs are either eliminated from the playoffs or have a break between playoff series. [READ]

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, whose coronation as the first European-born Most Valuable Player in NBA history has been expected for weeks, is scheduled to officially receive the MVP trophy at a Tuesday news conference in Dallas, ESPN.com has learned.

The NBA has handed out its past three MVPs -- two straight to Phoenix's Steve Nash after Minnesota's Kevin Garnett won in 2004 -- at the start of the second round. But it's believed the league opted to put some distance between Nowitzki's ceremony and the Mavericks' stunning first-round exit against Golden State.

By the time Nowitzki collects his award, nearly two weeks will have elapsed since the 67-win Mavs became the just the third No. 1 seed in NBA history to lose to a No. 8 seed. The previous two No. 1 seeds to lose so quickly, however, suffered five-game exits as opposed to losing a seven-game series: Seattle in 1994 to Denver and Miami in 1999 to New York.

Said Nowitzki, reached by phone Thursday night: "Nobody's told me anything. You [media] guys have been talking about it for a while, so let's see what happens.

"[But] it's hard to even think about that stuff right now. Everything [from the Golden State series] is still pretty fresh. It's been some tough days since we lost.

"I thought this was such an incredible year. We won 67 games and then to lose in the first round, it just feels so empty right now."

Asked to imagine what an MVP ceremony would be like after such a disappointment, Nowitzki said: "If I do get it, it's an incredible honor. I'm sure 20 years from now or whatever, to see that in the [record] books, it's an amazing achievement. But right now, it's hard. Obviously, you can't feel good about the way our season ended." The Boston Celtics announced today that they have extended the contract of Head Coach Glenn “Doc” Rivers. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Doc is a leader and I have all the confidence in the world in Doc as coach of the Celtics. With Doc as our coach we have the continuity that is crucial in the development of the franchise.” Danny Ainge said, Celtics Executive Director of Basketball Operations.

Rivers just completed his third season with the Celtics and has amassed a record of 102-144. Rivers earned his first coaching win with the Celtics on November 6, 2004 against the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden with a 107-73 victory. Rivers recorded his 100th Celtics coaching win against the Orlando Magic on March 28, 2007 in a 105-96 double-overtime victory.

In his first season with the Celtics, Rivers led the Celtics to their first Atlantic Division title since the 1991-92 season. During the 2005 Playoffs under Rivers, the Celtics battled with the Indiana Pacers but were ultimately defeated in the seventh game of the first round.

“I am happy to be the Head Coach of the Boston Celtics . Moving forward I am more determined to move this franchise in the right direction and I believe that I can do that.” Rivers said. [READ]

Amaré Stoudemire called the Spurs a dirty team and directed most of his words towards Bruce Bowen and Manu Ginobili.

"It was a wide-open play," he said. "I saw the replay and Bruce Bowen came up behind me, measured his feet and kicked me purposely in the back of my Achilles. That was a dirty play.

"I hope the NBA looks into in and takes a look at Bruce Bowen. In Game 1, I told Bruce to calm down because he might get somebody hurt out there. He had a 'don't care' type of attitude. And it showed in Game 2, when he kicked me purposely in my Achilles. I almost came down wrong and he almost caused an injury. He's known for doing that. I just hope the NBA and the commissioner takes a look because it's definitely a dirty play and that's not something we need."

Stoudemire said he had told Bowen to "Calm down" in Game 1, because he felt Bowen was playing recklessly.

"He was just kind of out of control," Stoudemire said. "I mean, Bruce Bowen's normally under control, but he ran directly into me. I said, 'Man, you're going to get somebody hurt out here. He was like, 'Shut up." I was like, 'Man, I'm just giving you some cautions. You're going to get somebody hurt.' But he wasn't hearing it. . . . Bruce Bowen, who's a two-time champion, should have more class than that."

Stoudemire was upset with Ginobili for grabbing his knee while falling. He said Ginobili had kneed him in the crotch earlier this season.

The ratings in Game 1 between the Nets and Toronto were the lowest of any playoff series carried on ESPN (1.3), although Nielsen does not include Canadian households. Game 1 of the Detroit-Orlando series was the second lowest (1.6), according to an ESPN spokesman, Dave Nagel.
