MUAN, South Korea (Yonhap) -- A South Korean passenger airplane veered off the runway and collided with a fence at an airport in the southwestern city of Muan, police and firefighters said Sunday.

The accident happened at 9:07 a.m. when the Jeju Air flight was landing at the Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, about 288 kilometers away from Seoul, the officials said.
​
The plane, with some 175 passengers and six crew members aboard, was returning from Bangkok.
​
Authorities were conducting an investigation on the site to determine the exact cause of the crash and rescue operations were also under way, the officials said.

(무안=연합뉴스) 장아름 기자 = 전남 무안국제공항에서 탑승객 181명을 태운 여객기가 착륙 중 추락했다.

29일 한국공항공사와 전남소방본부 등에 따르면 이날 오전 9시 7분께 태국 방콕발 제주항공 7C2216편 항공기가 무안국제공항 활주로로 착륙을 시도하던 중 추락했다.

항공기는 활주로 외벽을 충돌하면서 반파되고 화재가 발생했다.

사고가 난 기종은 B737-800으로, 승객 175명과 승무원 6명 등 총 181명이 타고 있었다.

현재까지 기체 후미에서 2명이 구조됐으며 23명이 숨지거나 다친 것으로 파악됐다.

기체 앞부분과 중간 탑승객까지 합치면 사상자는 더 많을 것으로 예상된다.

경찰과 소방당국은 항공기 화재를 초기 진화하고 기체 후미부터 구조 작업을 진행 중이다.
