Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks was named the winner of the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2006-07 season, the NBA announced today.

The nine-year NBA veteran totaled 1,138 points, including 83 first place votes, from a panel of 129 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Players were awarded 10 points for each first-place vote, seven points for each second-place vote, five for third, three for fourth and one for each fifth-place vote received.

Rounding out the top five in voting for MVP were Phoenix’s Steve Nash (1,013 points/44 first-place votes), the Los Angeles Lakers ’ Kobe Bryant (521 points/two first-place votes), San Antonio’s Tim Duncan (286 points) and Cleveland’s LeBron James (183 points).

Nowitzki is the first European-born player to win the NBA MVP Award and joins Hakeem Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets (1993-94), Duncan (2001-02 and 2002-03) and Nash (2004-05 and 2005-06) on the list of international players that have captured the Podoloff Trophy. [READ]

Robert Horry of the San Antonio Spurs has been suspended two games without pay and Amaré Stoudemire and Boris Diaw of
the Phoenix Suns have each been suspended one game without pay for their actions in last night's game, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President Basketball Operations.

Horry has been suspended for flagrantly fouling Phoenix’s Steve Nash and striking Raja Bell above the shoulders with a forearm. Stoudemire and Diaw have been suspended for leaving “the immediate vicinity of their bench" during an altercation. The incident occurred with :18 remaining
in the fourth period of the Suns' 104-98 win over the Spurs last night at AT&T Center.

Horry will serve his suspension sitting out Games 5 and 6 of the Spurs-Suns Western Conference Semifinal series, while Stoudemire and Diaw will miss Game 5 tomorrow night at US Airways Center in Phoenix. [READ]

Police said they found a bag of cocaine inside an SUV that the 54-year-old Barnes was driving.

Barnes, nicknamed "Bad News" for his off-the-court problems, was arrested along a highway shoulder in Johnston, said Major Steven O'Donnell, a state police spokesman. [READ]

There is no timetable for Hopkins to replace Boeheim, a Hall of Fame and national championship-winning coach, but Hopkins and the university finally have reached an agreement to put a succession plan in writing. The move has been in the works for months, but final details are being worked out in assistant coach Hopkins' current contract.

Dr. Lewis Yocum performed the arthroscopic procedure at the Kerlan Jobe Surgery Center.

Odom will wear a sling for 10 days before starting rehabilitation. He is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of training camp in October. [READ]

The Miami HEAT announced today that All-Star guard Dwyane Wade underwent a pair of successful surgeries this morning at Baptist Doctors Hospital of Miami. The procedures entailed a repair of his dislocated left shoulder and a debridement and repair of his left patella tendon. Both surgeries were performed by HEAT team physician Dr. Harlan Selesnick. No timetable has been set on Wade’s return to action.

Despite missing a total of 31 games due to injury this season, Wade led the HEAT in scoring average (franchise-record 27.4 ppg), points (1,397), field goals made (472) and attempted (962), free throws made (432) and attempted (535), assists (384) and steals (107). He ranked 13th in the NBA in free throws made, 16th in free throws attempted, 31st in field goal percentage (.491), 41st in field goals made and 51st in field goals attempted. His franchise-record 27.4 ppg scoring average would have ranked fourth in the NBA, although he did not play enough games to qualify in that category. In addition to setting a career high in scoring average he also established single-season highs in free throw percentage (.807) and three-point field goals made (21) and attempted (79). The 6’4” versatile guard, who earned All-NBA honors (Third Team) for the third straight season, topped the HEAT in scoring a team-high 43 times, in assists on 39 occasions, in steals 32 times, in minutes in 31 contests, in blocks 13 times and in rebounds twice. An NBA spokesperson said today that the incident between Robert Horry and Steve Nash that took place with 18.4 seconds remaining in Game 4 is currently under review, but there is no guarantee a decision will be made today -- only that it will be made prior to Game 5, meaning it could come Wednesday.

Horry body-checked Nash into the scorer's table late in the Suns' come-from-behind, 104-98 win in San Antonio that evened their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal at 2-2.

Horry was ejected and could face a suspension, but the latter fate also may befall Suns Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw, who both left the bench to go after Horry after the check.

NBA rules prohibit players from leaving the bench during an altercation and make it plain that violators will be suspended without pay for a minimum of one game and fined $35,000. [READ]

Mitchell's contract expires June 30 and Colangelo said yesterday talks are under way to sign the NBA coach of the year to an extension.

One team officially sought permission to speak to Mitchell, but was denied. Another team asked informally about a timeline that needed to be followed.

"The response was basically I'm not prepared to release Sam to speak to other teams at this stage," Colangelo remarked. "It's far too early in the process and we're not at that point yet." [READ]

Lakers' Odom To Have Surgery

Forward Lamar Odom is scheduled to undergo surgery today in Los Angeles, and three Laker assistant coaches are interviewing for head coaching jobs of other teams, the L.A. Times are reporting.

Odom, 27, will have a torn labrum repaired in his left shoulder, the same procedure he had two years ago that required a four-month recovery period. If the tear isn't as bad as it was two years ago, Odom's recovery time would be shorter.

"They're going to go in and see what the shoulder looks like, but they won't know until they open him up," said Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz.

The Seattle SuperSonics and Sacramento Kings have received permission from the Lakers to interview assistant coach Kurt Rambis for their head coaching jobs, a league source said.

Brian Shaw and Jim Cleamons are also being interviewed for head coach positions, Shaw by Indiana and Sacramento, and Cleamons by Seattle. [READ]

The good thing for the Chicago Bulls is they extended their season with a Game 4 win at the United Center.

But now the Bulls must return to the Palace, where they were blown out in the first two games of this series by a combined 47 points. Facing another elimination game, center Ben Wallace admitted that the "pressure is still on us."

Bulls coach Scott Skiles said the Palace's atmosphere got the best of his team in the first two games of the series.

"They can be obnoxious up there," said veteran power forward P.J. Brown. "They were saying a lot of different things around the bench the first two games, and they were really enjoying it. They're great fans. They're like Chicago fans, like New York fans — some of the best sports fans in the business."

"You've got to feed off of that. You can't look at it as a negative. I look at it like, hey, put the ball in the basket, get a dunk or something."

Bulls center Ben Wallace is all too familiar with playing at the Palace and insists nothing fazes him.

"I already knew how tough it was to come in there and play," Wallace said. "I'm just catching it from a different end. But I welcome all of that. I love being in those type of situations.
