16. 특별한 해 2010년

 무비스님이 68세가 되는 2010년은 『화엄경』과 관련해서 특별한 해다. 이 해 3월 첫 번째 월요일, 부산 문수선원에서 드디어 <대방광불화엄경 산림대법회>가 시작되었다.

“이번 『화엄경』 산림법회는 내 생애 최후의 강의가 될 것입니다. 스님들 요청으로 『화엄경』 강의를 준비하면서 처음에는 경전 내용을 요약하려고 했지만, 그렇게 해서는 제대로 된 공부가 안될 것이라 생각했어요. 그래서 전체를 차분히 강의해야겠다고 마음을 고쳐먹었습니다. 계산을 하니 10년 결사가 되겠더라고요.”

긴 결사를 준비하며 무비스님은 제일 먼저 체력 단련에 들어갔다. 매일 금정산 산책을 하고, 비가 오거나 눈이 오는 날에는 러닝머신으로 운동을 했다.

이즈음 무비스님이 머물고 있는 ‘염화실’ 현판을 원래 주인이신 조실스님이 찾아가셨다. 그 자리에 무비스님이 직접 ‘화엄전’ 편액을 달았다.

우리나라 불교를 안정적으로 정착시킨 분들은 원효스님과 의상스님이셨다. 원효스님과 의상스님은 한국 불교도 뿐만 아니라 세계 불교도들이 성인으로 추앙한다. 이분들이 가르치신 불교는 화엄불교였다.

의상스님이 유학에서 돌아와 화엄사상을 전파하는 근거지로 전국에 열 개의 화엄사찰을 만들었는데 범어사도 그중에 한 사찰이었다. 무비스님이 이 분들의 뜻대로 세상에 『화엄경』을 다시 펼치려는 마당에 자연스럽게 범어사에 ‘화엄전’ 이라는 이름의 당우가 생기게 되었다.

16. A Very Special Year;2010

The year 2010, when Mubi Seunim turned 68, was a special year for the Avatamsaka Sutra.

On the first Monday of March that year, the ‘Great Hwaeom Sallim Assembly’ finally began at Munsu Seonwon in Busan.

“This series of lectures on the Avatamsaka Sutra will be the last one of my life.

When I first prepared the lectures on the Avatamsaka Sutra at the request of other monks, I thought about just summarizing the text. But then I realized that wouldn't be a proper way to study.

So, I changed my mind. I decided to teach the entire sutra slowly and carefully. I calculated the time, and it turned out to be a 10-year commitment.”

To prepare for this long journey, the first thing Mubi Seunim did was to build his physical strength.

He took walks on Mt. Geumjeong every day. On rainy or snowy days, he stayed inside and exercised on a treadmill.

Around that time, the Head Master, who was the original owner, took back the nameplate of 'Yeomhwasil' from Mubi Seunim’s room. In its place, Mubi Seunim himself hung a new nameplate: 'Hwaeomjeon’.

Wonhyo Seunim and Uisang Seunim were the ones who firmly established Buddhism in Korea.

Wonhyo Seunim and Uisang Seunim are respected as saints by Buddhists in Korea and all over the world. The Buddhism they taught was ‘Hwaeom Buddhism‘.

After Uisang Seunim returned from his studies abroad, he built ten Hwaeom temples across the country to spread Hwaeom Buddhism. Beomeosa Temple was one of them.

As Mubi Seunim prepared to share the Avatamsaka Sutra with the world once more—following the wishes of the great masters—a building named 'Hwaeomjeon' naturally came to be at Beomeosa Temple.
