EBS 수능 교재 영문 해석의 문제점: 79. learned by example

The most important things about scientific method are usually learned by example. For that reason, it seems likely that a brilliant, productive and practical scientist like Galileo had much influence on the way in which scientific work was actually done. Galileo is best-known for his application of the telescope to astronomy by which he demonstrated the importance of observational fact. By his work on the science of mechanics, particularly on accelerated motion, he showed how, in physical research, one must start by looking for quantities that can be measured and then try to establish the relation between them. He showed how to combine observation, experiment, speculation and mathematical analysis in a way which is typical of modern science. In retrospect, he is often called ‘the first modern scientist.’ (『EBS 수능특강 인터넷 수능 영어독해연습 1 종합편』, 2012년 3월 발행, 한국교육방송공사, 62쪽)     과학적 방법에 관한 가장 중요한 것들은 대개 예증을 통해 학습된다. 그러한 이유로 갈릴레오와 같은 탁월하고 생산적이며 실용적인 과학자가 과학 연구가 실제로 행해진 방법에 대해 많은 영향을 발휘했던 것이 가능했던 것처럼 보인다. 갈릴레오는 관찰을 통한 사실의 중요성을 증명해 보여주는 천문학에서의 망원경의 사용으로 가장 잘 알려져 있다. 역학, 특히 가속 운동에 관한 그의 연구를 통해 그는 물리학 연구에서 과학자가 어떤 방법으로 측정 가능한 양에 대한 탐색을 시작하여 그것들 사이의 관계를 규명하려고 노력해야 하는 지를 보여주었다. 그는 현대과학의 전형적 방식으로 관찰, 실험, 숙고, 수학적 분석을 통합시키는 방법을 보여주었다. 되돌아보면, 그는 ‘최초의 현대 과학자’로 종종 불려진다. (『EBS 수능특강 인터넷 수능 영어독해연습 1 종합편』, 2012년 3월 발행, 한국교육방송공사, <정답과 해설> 30쪽)     -------------------------------------------------     여기서 “example”은 “본보기”라는 뜻으로 쓰인 것 같다. 적어도 “예증”은 아닌 것 같다.   “In retrospect”를 “되돌아보면”으로 옮겼는데 어울리지 않는다. “되돌아보면, 그는 ‘최초의 현대 과학자’로 종종 불려진다”는 이상한 문장이다.   이 문장을 어떻게 옮겨야 할지는 나도 잘 모르겠다. “소급하여, 사람들은 종종 그를 ‘최초의 현대 과학자’로 부른다”라고 옮기면 어떨까?       이덕하 2012-05-20
