박상삼은 40년간 화실이 아닌 오지의 들판을 작업실 삼아온 화가다. 매주 목요일부터 일요일까지 경기 양평 고들빼기들판, 충북 충주 월상리 장천들판, 경남 남해 다랭이마을을 오가며 새벽 다섯 시경, 이슬이 채 마르지 않은 시각에 작업한다.
그의 작업은 붓으로 그리는 회화가 아니라 콜라주다. 화면에 오르는 것은 물감만이 아니라, 5천 년 농부의 손길이 쌓인 그 땅의 흙과 그해에 자란 들꽃, 벼, 보리 같은 실제 작물이다. 이 현장재료들은 오직 그 시간, 그 장소에만 존재하므로 누구도 똑같이 다시 만들 수 없다 — 타자의 모사 자체가 원천적으로 불가능한 작업 방식이다.
이 연작은 세 개의 개념 단계로 전개되어 왔다.
자연대화주의(自然對話主義, Ziran Dialogues): 화가가 자연에 말을 걸고 응답을 받던 시기. 붓질은 아리랑의 가락처럼 오르내리고 굽이치는 선으로, 몸에 새겨진 리듬을 화폭에 풀어냈다.
자연증언주의(自然證言主義, Ziran Testimony): 화가는 더 이상 그리는 자가 아니라 증인이 된다. 흙과 식물을 직접 화면에 붙이는 콜라주로 전환하며, 자연이 스스로 남긴 흔적을 대신 전하는 역할로 옮겨간다.
자연가치주의(自然價値主義, Ziran Value): 증언을 넘어, 자연 그 자체가 지닌 본질적 가치를 선언하는 단계.
현재 작업은 증언주의와 가치주의 두 층위가 겹쳐 전개되고 있다. 화면 위의 들꽃 한 송이는 단지 이미지가 아니라, 그 땅에서 그해에 실제로 자란 생명이 증언이자 가치 그 자체로 놓인 것이다.

Artist Statement
For forty years, Sang Sam Park has made the open field itself his studio. Every Thursday through Sunday, he travels between three remote sites — the Godeulppaegi fields of Yangpyeong, the Jangcheon fields of Wolsang-ri in Chungju, and the terraced paddies of Namhae — arriving before dawn, often around 5:15am, while the dew is still on the grass.
His work is not painting in the traditional sense but collage. What is placed on the surface is not pigment alone, but the soil of the land itself — shaped by five thousand years of farmers' hands — together with the actual wildflowers, rice stalks, and barley that grew there that particular year. These on-site materials exist only in that time and place; no one can reproduce them. Imitation by another hand is, by nature, impossible.
The series has unfolded across three conceptual stages:
Ziran Dialogues (自然對話主義): A period in which the painter spoke to nature and received its response. Brushstrokes rose and fell like the rhythm of Arirang, a bodily cadence unfolding across the canvas.
Ziran Testimony (自然證言主義): The painter is no longer one who depicts, but a witness. Shifting to collage — affixing soil and plant matter directly to the surface — he comes to carry forward the traces nature has left of itself.
Ziran Value (自然價値主義): Beyond testimony, a stage that declares the inherent value of nature itself.
Current work unfolds at the intersection of Testimony and Value. A single wildflower on the canvas is not an image of a flower — it is the living thing that actually grew on that land, in that year, standing as both testimony and value itself.
