Gallery Dam presents SINZOW’s solo exhibition “I Am Light,” featuring new works that delve into the brilliance of life, and the interplay between light and darkness—an enduring theme that the artist has explored throughout his career.
The Artist and His Practice
Born in Kanagawa and currently based in Niigata, SINZOW graduated from Musashino Art University with a degree in painting. For over two decades, he has been actively working between Korea and Japan. His career gained momentum in 2001 when he received the Silver Prize at GEISAI, a project curated by Takashi Murakami. Since his first solo exhibition at Gallery Dam in 2009, SINZOW has held more than fifteen shows there, fostering a deep connection with Korean audiences.
SINZOW’s paintings are distinguished by their thick, layered materiality. The simplified human figures evoke the innocence of primal art while reflecting the complexity of contemporary inner life. Though distorted and exaggerated in form, his subjects pulse with the essential energy of existence.
“I Am Light” — A Turn Toward Illumination
The exhibition title “I Am Light” stands as a declaration that encapsulates the artist’s philosophy. Through his work, SINZOW affirms, “I am already light.” For him, painting is not merely an act of creation but a practice of illumination—shedding light on oneself and the surrounding world.
The artist remarks, “I gaze upon the radiance of each moment, carefully, so as not to lose any of it. I paint those particles of brilliance onto the canvas.” In his art, light and darkness do not exist in opposition; rather, like the inner glow of a painting, they coexist and together form the totality of life.
The works on view captivate with their bold use of primary colors and richly textured surfaces. Vibrant hues of pink, blue, yellow, and orange clash and merge across the canvas, radiating vitality. The faces and bodies rendered in simple lines resemble a child’s drawings—innocent yet profound, revealing existential questions beneath their surface simplicity.
The Art of Transformation and Illumination
“It is time to replace every cell within me and become a new person. And I will shine upon those around me—deeply and warmly.” This declaration embodies a profound reflection on the artist’s sense of responsibility and belief in the transformative power of art. Painting, for him, extends beyond self-expression; it is an act of illuminating others and brightening the world.
Though SINZOW’s works may appear raw and primal, they are imbued with a delicate sensitivity and profound contemplation. Each figure, though isolated, communicates intensely with the viewer through a commanding presence. This is what the artist calls his “deep and warm light.”
A Philosophical Inquiry in Paint
SINZOW’s I Am Light transcends the boundaries of a conventional painting exhibition. It poses a philosophical question about the essence of existence and the meaning of art itself. His glowing canvases remind viewers that each of us is already light—and that we exist to illuminate one another.
"I Am Light" -

Artist Statement:
I am light.
I am already light.
I gaze upon the brilliance of each moment.
Carefully, so as not to lose sight of it all.
I paint those particles of brilliance onto the canvas.
Just as the painting glows from within, all light and darkness alike.
It's time to replace all my cells and become a new person.
And I will illuminate those around me.
Dense and warm.
