<p> </p><p> </p><p><span data-ke-size="size20">이렇게 착착 준비되는 <화엄산림 대법회> 소식을 신도들은 2009년 12월 10일 조계사에서 열린 <50선지식과 함께 하는 화엄산림 지장산림법회 및 천도재>법회가 끝나고 나서 들었다.</span></p><p><span data-ke-size="size20">마치 예고편이라도 보여주듯이 이날 무비스님은 비까지 오는 12월 추운 날씨를 무릅쓰고, 가뿐하게 서울 조계사에 와서 초청된 50인의 법사 중에 한 분으로서 『화엄경』중의 「십회향품」을 청중에게 법문하였다.</span></p><p><span data-ke-size="size20">이날 법사인 무비스님 말고는 아무도 교재를 가지고 있지 못했다. </span></p><p><span data-ke-size="size20">책도 없이 『화엄경』「십회향품」을 듣고자 모인 청중에게 무비스님은 법회 말미에 ‘이근공덕’이라는 말을 건넸다.</span></p><p><span data-ke-size="size20">그때는 그 말속에 담긴 자비를 아무도 알아듣지 못했다. </span></p><p><span data-ke-size="size20">나중에서야 무비스님이 나눠준 81권의 『화엄경』책과 매일 무비스님이 설해주는 『화엄경』 법문을 공부하면서 화엄행자들도 알게 되었다. 그때 ‘이근공덕’이라는 말씀에는 무비스님의 안타까움과 사랑이 담뿍 담겨 있었다는 것, 청중은 ‘이근공덕’이라는 자비로운 말씀을 먼저 들어 놓고, 훗날 알아듣는 만큼 감읍했다. </span></p><p> </p><p><span style="color: #1b711d;" data-ke-size="size20"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Followers first heard the news about the upcoming ‘Great Hwaeom Assembly’ on December 10, 2009. It was right after ‘</span>A Buddhist Ceremony with 50 Wise Masters: Hwaeom Sallim, Jijang <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Sallim and a </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Memorial service’</span> <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">held at Jogyesa Temple in Seoul.</span></span></p><p><span style="color: #1b711d;" data-ke-size="size20"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">It was like a preview of what was to come. Despite the cold, rainy December weather, Mubi Seunim traveled to Seoul with a light heart. </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">As one of the 50 invited teachers,</span> <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">he gave a lecture on the ‘Ten Dedications’ from the ‘Avatamsaka Sutra’.</span></span></p><p><span style="color: #1b711d; background-color: #ffffff;" data-ke-size="size20">On that day, only Mubi Seunim had the study materials; no one else in the audience had a book to follow.</span></p><p><span style="color: #1b711d;" data-ke-size="size20"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">The people gathered to hear the 'Ten Dedications' from the </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">‘Avatamsaka Sutra’</span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">,</span> <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">even though they had no books. At the end of the talk, Mubi Seunim shared the words 'I-geun-gong-deok.' </span></span></p><p><span style="color: #1b711d; background-color: #ffffff;" data-ke-size="size20">At that moment, no one understood the deep compassion in those words.</span></p><p><span style="color: #1b711d;" data-ke-size="size20"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Only much later, the Hwaeom followers finally understood. They realized it while studying the 81 </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">volumes of the Avatamsaka Sutra given by Mubi Seunim and listening to his daily lectures.</span></span></p><p><span style="color: #1b711d;" data-ke-size="size20"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">They realized that the phrase </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">'I-geun-gong-deok,' </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">(meaning ‘the merit and blessing of simply listening with your ears’) was filled with Mubi Seunim’s deep love and concern for them. He knew they couldn't understand everything right away, so he wanted to reassure them that just being there to listen was already a great blessing. When the audience finally understood this later, they were </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">deeply moved with gratitude.</span></span></p>
