영시번역 Proverbs of Hell - William Blake

저희 수업 시간에 전부 다는 아니지만 일부분을 해서 올립니다. 번역과 함께 수업시간에 교수님과 수강생들이 같이 격언에 대해 무슨 의미일까 각자 자신의 의견을 내놓았는데 정말 재밌었어요. 저도 나름대로 해서 교수님의 의견과 다른 사람들과의 의견을 비교해봤는데 정말 재밌더군요. 앞에서 발표하거나 토론하는 것을 싫어하지만 이번 시간만큼은 그냥 자신의 생각을 내 놓아서 그런지 부담도 안되고 정말 재밌었어요.

1. In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.
씨 뿌릴 때에 배우고, 추수 때에 가르치고, 겨울에 즐겨라.
2. Drive your cart and your plow over the bones of the dead.
죽은 자들의 뼈다귀 위로 마차와 쟁기를 몰아라.
3. The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.
지나침의 길을 걷다 보면 지혜의 궁전에 이른다.
4. Prudence is a rich ugly old maid courted by Incapacity.
신중함은 못생긴 돈 많은 노처녀로서 무능력의 애인이다.
5. He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence.
간절히 원하면서 행하지 않는 자는 역병을 가져온다.
6. The cut worm forgives the plow.
잘린 벌레는 쟁기를 용서한다.
7. Dip him in the river who loves water.
물을 좋아하는 사람을 강물 속에 넣어라.
8. A fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees.
바보는 현명한 남자가 보는 같은 나무를 보지 않는다.
9. He whose face gives no light, shall never become a star.
얼굴에서 빛이 나지 않는 자는 별이 될 수 없다.
10. Eternity is in love with the productions of time.
영원은 세월의 산물을 좋아한다.
11. The busy bee has no time for sorrow.
바쁜 벌은 슬퍼할 시간이 없다.
12. The hours of folly are measur'd by the clock, but of wisdom: no clock can measure.
어리석음의 시간은 시계로 헤아리지만 지혜의 시간을 잴 시계는 없다.
13. All wholsom food is caught without a net or a trap..
부족 년에 수중 량과 대책을 내놓는다
14. Bring out number weight & measure in a years of dearth.
유익한 음식은 그물이나 덫으로 얻는 것이 아니다.
15. No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings.
자기 날개로 난다면, 어느 새에게 너무 높이 날아간다고 말하랴.
16. A dead body, revenges not injuries.
죽은 사람은 해 입은 것에 대해 복수하지 않는다.
17. The most sublime act is to set another before you.
남을 나보다 앞세우는 것, 그것이 가장 고결한 행위이다.
18. If the fool would persist in his folly he would become wise.
어리석은 자가 어리석음을 끝내 고집하면 지혜로워 진다.
19. Folly is the cloke of knavery.
어리석음은 속임수의 구실이다.
20. Shame is prides cloke.
부끄러움은 자만의 구실이다.
21. Prisons are built with stones of Law, Brothels with bricks of Religion.
감옥은 법의 돌로, 매음굴은 종교의 벽돌로 세워진다.
22. The pride of the peacock is the glory of God.
공작새의 오만은 신의 영광이다.
23. The lust of the goat is the bounty of God.
염소의 욕정은 신의 하사품이다.
24. The wrath of the lion is the wisdom of God.
사자의 분노는 신의 지혜이다.
25. The nakedness of woman is the work of God.
여인의 알몸은 신의 작품이다.
26. Excess of sorrow laughs. Excess of joy weeps.
슬픔을 넘어서면 웃고, 기쁨을 넘어서면 운다
27. The roaring of lions, the howling of wolves, the raging of the stormy sea, and the
destructive sword, are portions of eternity too great for the eye of man.
사자의 울부짖음, 늑대의 울음, 폭풍우 치는 바다의 아우성, 파괴적인 칼은 모두 영원의
일부로서 인간의 눈으로는 이해가 안 된다.
28. The fox condemns the trap, not himself
여우는 자기 자신이 아니라 덫을 나무란다.
29. Joys impregnate. Sorrows bring forth.
기쁨은 스며들고 슬픔은 삭이 튼다.
30. Let man wear the fell of the lion, Woman the fleece of the sheep.
남자에게는 사자의 가죽을, 여자에게는 양의 털을 입혀라.
31. The bird a nest, the spider a web, man friendship.
새에게는 둥지, 거미에 거미줄, 사람에게는 우정
32. The selfish smiling fool, & the sullen frowning fool, shall be both thought wise, that they may be a rod.
이기적인 미소를 짓고있는 바보와 불쾌한 눈살을 찌푸리고 있는 바보는 둘 다 그들에게
회초리가 될 현명함을 생각하게 될 거이다.
33. What is now proved was once, only imagin'd.
지금 증명된 것은 한때는 상상에만 있던 것이다.
34. The rat, the mouse, the fox, the rabbit: watch the roots: the lion, the tyger, the horse, the elephant, watch the fruits.
들쥐, 시궁쥐, 여우, 토끼는 뿌리를 살펴보고 사자, 호랑이, 말, 코끼리는 열매를 살핀다.
35. The cistern contains; the fountain overflows
우물에서는 물이 고이고 샘에서는 물이 넘쳐흐른다.
