SK Group on Tuesday released an artificial intelligence (AI) video clip recreating its former chairmen to honor their entrepreneurship as the conglomerate marks its 73rd founding anniversary.

SK그룹은 창립 73주년을 맞아 역대 회장들의 창업 정신을 기리기 위해 인공지능(AI)으로 재현한 역대 회장들의 영상을 공개했다.

The five-minute clip features AI recreations of SK Group founder Choi Jong-gun and former Chairman Chey Jong-hyon delivering their past remarks and management anecdotes to current SK Group employees. The video has been playing at SK Group’s headquarters in Jongno District, Seoul, since Monday.

5분 분량의 이 영상은 SK그룹 창립자 최종건과 최종현 전 회장의 AI 재현 영상으로, 두 회장이 과거 SK그룹 임직원들에게 경영 일화와 명언을 들려주는 모습을 담고 있다. 이 영상은 월요일부터 서울 종로구에 위치한 SK그룹 본사에서 상영되고 있다.

The video portrays the history of SK Group, beginning with the reconstruction of Sunkyong Textile's factory, which was devastated during the 1950-53 Korean War, and tracing the group’s expansion into textiles, hotels, oil and telecommunications.

이 영상은 1950~1953년 한국전쟁 당시 파괴된 선경섬유 공장의 재건을 시작으로 SK그룹이 섬유, 호텔, 석유, 통신 등으로 사업을 확장해 온 역사를 보여준다.

SK Group was established in 1953 when Choi salvaged the remains of the factory and acquired the property through a postwar government disposition. Sunkyong’s linings and bedding fabrics gained nationwide popularity, laying the foundation for the company’s expansion as a textile group.

SK그룹은 최 회장이 전후 정부 매각을 통해 공장 부지를 인수하고 잔해를 수습하면서 1953년에 설립되었다. 선경직물의 안감과 침구류는 전국적인 인기를 얻으며 섬유 그룹으로 성장하는 발판을 마련했다.

In the video, Choi recalls his philosophy of “straightening what is bent, reconnecting what is broken and rebuilding what has collapsed,” saying, “I believe we can do it, we must do it, and if we try, we can achieve it.”

영상에서 최 회장은 "휘어진 것을 바로잡고, 부서진 것을 다시 연결하고, 무너진 것을 재건한다"는 자신의 경영 철학을 회상하며 "우리는 할 수 있고, 해야 하며, 노력하면 이룰 수 있다고 믿는다"고 말한다.

SK Group’s expansion came after founder Choi’s younger brother, Chey Jong-hyon, took the helm of the group in 1973. The brothers used different English spellings of their shared surname.

SK그룹의 본격적인 확장은 최회장의 동생인 최종현 회장이 1973년 그룹 경영권을 물려받은 이후 이루어졌다. 두 형제는 같은 성씨를 사용하지만 영어 표기는 다르게 사용한다.

In the video, the former chairman recalls his commitment to transforming Sunkyong into a world-class company, including his decision to establish a conglomerate whose business spans from petroleum to textiles.

영상에서 전 회장은 석유에서 섬유에 이르기까지 다양한 사업을 아우르는 대기업을 설립하기로 결정했던 순간을 포함하여, 선경그룹을 세계적인 기업으로 탈바꿈시키겠다는 자신의 의지를 회상한다.

He stresses that the group must “constantly prepare, plan and take on challenges,” recalling how this mindset led SK Group to acquire its mobile communications business — a key driver behind its rise into its current status — by bidding significantly above market prices in a privatization process.

그는 그룹이 "끊임없이 준비하고 계획하며 도전해야 한다"고 강조하며, 이러한 정신으로 SK그룹이 현재의 성장 동력이 된 이동통신 사업을 민영화 과정에서 시장가보다 훨씬 높은 가격에 인수했던 과정을 설명한다.

The video concludes with current Chairman Chey Tae-won’s remarks urging SK employees to “write a new chapter of growth based on the spirit we inherited from the founding generation.”

영상은 최태원 현 회장이 SK 임직원들에게 "창업자 세대의 정신을 바탕으로 새로운 성장의 장을 써나가자"라고 당부하는 것으로 마무리된다.

SK Group said the AI video project was proposed by the current chairman to share the founding generation’s wisdom with employees. The video was based on more than 3,000 digitally restored voice recordings from the group’s archives.

SK그룹은 이번 AI 영상 프로젝트가 현 회장의 제안으로, 창업자 세대의 지혜를 임직원들과 공유하기 위해 제작되었다고 밝혔다. 이 영상은 그룹 아카이브에 보관된 3,000개 이상의 음성 녹음을 디지털 복원한 자료를 기반으로 한다.

“The founding generation’s legacy is expected to serve as both a compass and a source of insight in a rapidly changing business environment,” an SK Group official said.

SK그룹 관계자는 "창업자 세대의 유산은 급변하는 비즈니스 환경 속에서 나침반이자 통찰력의 원천이 될 것으로 기대한다"고 말했다.
