Figures from a public opinion poll showing abnormally high approval ratings for President Yoon Suk-yeol are being shared among the far-right and ruling People Power Party (PPP) supporters, painting a picture of South Korean public opinion that has little basis in reality.
윤석열 대통령에 대한 지지율이 비정상적으로 높다는 여론조사 결과가 극우 및 집권 국민의힘(PPP) 지지자들 사이에서 공유되면서 현실적으로 근거가 거의 없는 한국 여론의 그림이 그려지고 있습니다.

The results of a survey of 1,000 Koreans aged 18 and older conducted by KOPRA Lab on behalf of Asia Today on Jan. 3-4 were shared on Monday, showing Yoon’s approval rating to be in the 40% range. The survey had a confidence level of 95%, a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, and a response rate of 4.7%. The fundamental problem of this survey lies in how the questions were so biased that it cannot be categorized as a typical public opinion poll.
지난 1월 3~4일 아시아투데이를 대표해 코프라랩이 18세 이상 한국인 1,000명을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 결과가 월요일에 공유되면서 윤석열 대통의 지지율이 40%대를 기록했습니다. 이번 설문조사의 신뢰수준은 95%, 오차범위는 플러스 또는 마이너스 3.1%포인트, 응답률은 4.7%였습니다. 이번 설문조사의 근본적인 문제는 일반적인 여론조사로 분류할 수 없을 정도로 편향된 문항이 어떻게 출제되었는지에 있습니다.

The first question of the survey asked whether the respondent supports Yoon, with the second question asking about which party the respondent supports. Next, the survey asked, “What is your opinion on how, despite the controversy surrounding Yoon’s arrest warrant being illegal, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials is attempting to forcibly detain a sitting president?”

The survey mentions the supposed illegality of the arrest warrant for Yoon, an argument propagated by Yoon and his camp, before asking respondents about their opinion.

Other questions include “In order to clear up suspicions surrounding the alleged hacking of National Election Commission’s servers and election fraud, which the president has listed as a reason for declaring martial law, do you believe that the NEC’s election system should be publicly verified?” and “What do you think about the proposal of a bill to punish those who bring attention to election fraud?” This method of questioning is usually avoided by conventional pollsters, as it would over-represent respondents of a particular political leaning.
다른 질문으로는 "대통령이 계엄령 선포 사유로 꼽은 중앙선거관리위원회 서버 해킹 및 선거 부정 의혹을 해소하기 위해 선관위의 선거제도를 공개적으로 검증해야 한다고 생각하십니까?", "선거 부정에 주목하는 사람들을 처벌하는 법안 발의에 대해 어떻게 생각하십니까?" 등이 있습니다. 이러한 질문 방식은 일반적으로 특정 정치 성향의 응답자를 과도하게 대변하기 때문에 기존 여론조사 기관에서는 기피하는 경우가 많습니다.

Lee Joon-ho, the CEO of polling firm STI, noted, “The average person would, after being exposed to three extremely biased questions in a row, end the call and refuse to complete the survey. It’s likely that only those who agreed with such sentiments stayed on the line to answer the remaining questions.”
여론조사업체 STI의 이준호 대표는 "일반인들은 세 가지 극단적으로 편향된 질문에 연달아 노출된 후 전화를 끊고 설문조사를 완료하기를 거부할 것"이라며 "그런 의견에 동의한 사람들만 남은 질문에 답하기 위해 전화를 끊었을 가능성이 높다"고 지적했습니다

“Surveys conducted by institutions are required to submit their surveys for inspection to the National Election Survey Deliberation Commission, but an exception is made for media-commissioned surveys. As such, the questions of those surveys do not have to be checked in advance,” Lee added.
"기관에서 실시하는 설문조사는 조사를 위해 중앙선거조사심의위원회에 제출해야 하지만, 언론 의뢰 설문조사의 경우 예외가 있습니다. 따라서 해당 설문조사의 질문은 사전에 확인할 필요가 없습니다."라고 이 의원은 덧붙였습니다.

A review shows that 58% of the polls (14 out of the 24) conducted by KOPRA Lab from 2022 to 2023 were commissioned by Ko Sung-kook TV, a YouTuber who has publicly defended Yoon’s declaration of martial law.

Asia Today, who commissioned the survey, has continued to report on allegations of election fraud with Ko as its lead writer.

“Since there is controversy surrounding the legality [of the warrant for Yoon’s arrest], we judged that we could reasonably ask what respondents thought about the president being forcibly detained,” Hyun said.

Commissioning surveys with leading questions, then reporting their biased results to rally the base and paint a distorted picture of overall public opinion is the classic kind of opinion-manipulation tactic used by the political broker Myung Tae-kyun. On Monday, media outlets ran their own articles on the poll from the Asia Today article — titled “Yoon Suk-yeol’s approval rating hits 40%” — without verifying the facts themselves. As articles began to circulate among far-right YouTubers, around 40 People Power Party lawmakers fired up by the news even gathered outside the presidential residence in Seoul.
주요 질문으로 설문조사를 의뢰한 후 편향된 결과를 보고해 지지층을 결집하고 전반적인 여론을 왜곡된 그림으로 그리는 것은 정치 브로커 명태균이 사용한 전형적인 여론 전술입니다. 월요일, 언론사들은 "윤석열 지지율 40% 돌파"라는 제목의 아시아투데이 기사를 통해 자체적으로 사실 확인 없이 여론조사 기사를 게재했습니다. 극우 유튜버들 사이에서 기사가 돌기 시작하자 국민의힘 의원 40여 명이 서울 대통령 관저 밖으로 모이기도 했습니다.

“Public opinion manipulation is evolving,” said Shin Jin-wook, a professor of sociology at Chung-Ang University. “It used to be that there was blatant manipulation of polling samples, but now data is being cleverly spun so that that they can say there was no intention of skewing findings.”

“If we don’t break up this opinion-manipulation network that starts with a polling agency and works its way through the media and the political sphere until finally rallying the public, we’re only going to see more of this kind of distortion in politics,” Shin said.
신 대표는 "여론조사 기관에서 시작해 언론과 정치권을 거쳐 마침내 대중을 결집시키는 여론조작 네트워크를 해체하지 않으면 정치에서 이런 왜곡 현상이 더 심해질 것"이라고 말했습니다.

The Democratic Party announced that it plans to file an official report with authorities against KOPRA Lab, which produced the survey in question, accusing it of violating the Public Official Election Act.
