It's my honor to address distinguished members of the Toastmaster club.
Today I will introduce a book which has funny name, "Who moved my cheese?" but I found it very impressive.
This book tells us a short fair-tale where 4 main characters appear. Two are mice named "sniff" and "scurry", and two are little people-being who are as small as mice but who look and act a lot like us. Those two little people's names are Haw and Hem respectively.
They are living near the maze which has chamber containing cheese to nourish and make them happy.
The maze is a labyrinth of corridors and chambers, some containing delicious cheese. But there are also dark corners and blind alleys leading nowhere. However, for those who found their way, the Maze held secrets that let them enjoy a better life.
You may notice what their names represent by now. The book tells us very simple juvenile story and is very easy to predict what's goning to happen afterward.
Someday they happened to find the chamber Which has enormous amount of cheese, named cheese station C and every morning after that the mice and the little people could get plenty of cheese. The cheese station C seemed to exist forever but one morning they woke up to find all cheese was gone. When the mice saw this happen they admitted the fact without hesitation and they started seeking a way to make a living again as their names and their diligent and simple character imply.
However when the little people found the fact that there would be no more cheese at the Cheese station C, they wasted many days screaming, yelling, wondering and being frustrated. While Sniff and Scurry had quickly move on, Hem and Haw continued to hem and haw. The little people was making a grievance against somebody who took all the cheese from them and dwelt in that place.
Finally Haw laughed at their meaningless behavior and suggested to Hem that they leave for new cheese station. Since Hem was so much accustomed to the Cheese station C that he didn't want to leave there, even though there was no cheese.
At last Haw got to leave for new cheese alone with fear and doubt.
Haw made many handwritings on the wall of maze while managing to find new cheese, the story tells us a lot of lessons through the Haw's handwritings on the wall.
Here I introduce those handwritings that can be great help to deal with the change in our work and in our life;
1. Change Happens. they keep moving cheese.
2. Anticipate change. Get ready for the cheese to move.
3. Monitor change. smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old.
4. Change. Move with the cheese.
5. enjoy change! savor the adventure and enjoy the taste of New cheese.
6. Be ready to change Quickly and enjoy it again. they keep moving the cheese.
As you see, the process is circular. this means we need to always get ready to adapt to any change in life.
Reading this simple story, I got little shocked and perplexed for a while. I found that I have acted like Hem so far. In case big chage happens in my work or life, how I can manage it? I couln't come up with answer promptly.
Now I'm changing way of thinking and way of acting confronting the small change in daily life. I decided not to avoid or grudge the change but to adapt myself more smoothly to the change.
I got a good chance to think of my life again with this small book and this is why I recommend this book to Toastmaster member.
The more you are accustomed to your life, the more you may be frustrated in case of the change in your life.
