MANDIBLE: Sacrifice. To some, it is just a word. To others, it is a code.
* sacrifice : 희생.
☞ code : 원래는 “암호 혹은 법전”의 뜻. 여기서는 ‘조직 내의 구성원을 움직이게 하는 그들만의 신조’ 정도의 의미.

* Jeez : [slang] 이런, 세상에.
* be bad at : ↔ be good at.
* word game : 각종 단어 게임.
MANDIBLE: A soldier knows / that the life of an individual ant doesn't matter. What matters is the colony. He's willing to live for the colony, to fight for the colony, to die for the colony.
☞ What matters is : =What counts is.
☞ colony : 보편적인 의미는 “식민지.” 여기서는 ‘개미 등의 생물이 모여 사는 군락’을 의미함.
Z: This guy's crazy.
BARBATUS: I hear you. = I agree with you.
MANDIBLE: At 0800 hours, we received word / that the termite enemy has mobilized. We have no choice but to launch a preemptive strike. You are the queen's finest. I know / you will all do your duty. I am proud to send you / into battle.
☞ At 0800 hours : 오전 8시를 나타내는 군대식 말투.
* word : [무관사] 기별, 소식. ☞ 다음에 나오는 that 이하는 동격절.
* mobilize : (군대가) 동원되다.
* have no choice but to do : --할 수 밖에 없다.
* launch : 시작하다.
* preemptive strike : 선제 공격.
☞ the queen's finest : 여왕의 최정예병들.
* do one's duty : 임무를 다하다.
☞ to send ... : 보내게 되어. [‘원인’의 to부정사]
Z: Into.. I'm sor.. I'm sorry. Into battle?
MANDIBLE: Dismissed. ☞ 해산!
Soldier: Left face. Forward March. ☞ 좌향 좌! 앞으로 가!
Z: You know, I think / there's been a terrible mistake. You know, the truth is / I just.. I just came for the speech.
☞ the truth is (that) ... : 사실은 말에요...
BARBATUS: Don't worry, kid. I'll watch out for ya.
* watch out for : --을 조심하다; --을 돌보다.
Soldiers: Sound off! One, two. Sound off! Three, huh? Sound off! Five, six ...
* sound off : (행진 중에 하나, 둘 하고) 보조를 맞추다.

* slaughter : 학살하다; 완전히 쳐부수다.
* just for fun : 그냥 재미삼아.
Z: So, these termites, they're.. they're.. These guys are not gonna put up much of a fight, right? I mean, we're talking about pushovers, right?
* not much of a : 대단한 --은 아니다.
* put up : (투지, 저항 등을) 보이다. ex) put up a brave fight 용감하게 싸우다.
* pushover : [口] 식은 죽 먹기, 낙승.
BARBATUS: Not really, kid. They're five times our size. And they shoot acid from their foreheads.
☞ five times our size : 우리 체격의 다섯 배. [배수사는 소유격과 관사, 지시사 앞에 위치함]
* acid : 산.
Z: [Gasps]
* gasp : 숨이 차다; (놀람 따위로) 숨이 막히다.
Soldier: Hey. Keep it moving, shorty.
☞ keep it moving : it은 여기서 ‘행진대열’을 가리킴. keep st. -ing 형태가 중요. cf) What kept you waiting for long?이란 표현을 기본반에서 배웠음.
* shorty : 키작은 사내를 낮추어 부르는 말.
[song] We ants go marching two by two. Hurrah, hurrah. We'll all be dead before we're through, hurrah, hurrah.
☞ We'll all be dead before we're through : 최후의 1인까지 죽어야 임무가 끝나는 거다.
☞ we're through : 임무를 완수하다. cf) I'll be through in a few minutes. 조금 있으면 끝납니다.
Z: Say, what.. exactly what.. does our platoon do? I mean, you know, we're going to be serving beverages or processing paperwork?
* say : 어..., 저 말야.
* platoon : 소대. cf) company : 중대.
* paperwork : 서류업무, 행정업무.
BARBATUS: Our platoon has the best assignment of all. We're the first into battle.
* assignment : 과제; 임무.
* of all : 모든 것[임무] 중에서.
Z: Huh?

* We're off : 우리는 떠난다. cf) I'm off to school! : 학교 다녀오겠습니다.
* destiny : 운명.
Z: Hey. Wait a minute. Let's not get.. We're being too hasty here. These.. these guys sound like bruisers. Just how were you figuring on beating them? ☞ 흰개미 격퇴에 대해 정확히 어떻게 작전을 짠 거야?
* bruiser : 싸움 좋아하는 사람, 난폭한 사람.
* figure : 꾀하다, 궁리하다. (on)
* Just how : 정확히 어떻게. ☞ 의문사 앞에서 just는 exactly의 의미.
BARBATUS: Superior numbers, kid. Overwhelm their defenses, kill their queen.
* superior : 우수한; 우세한, 월등한.
* overwhelm : 압도하다.
Z: Hey, fellas. You're being a little extreme, I feel. W.. Why don't we just try and influence their political process with campaign contributions?
* fella : =fellow, 동무, 친구.
☞ political process : 전당대회, 선거, 국민투표 등을 가리킴.
* contribution : 기부.
BARBATUS: I like you, kid. You got a sense of humor.
☞ You got : =You've got.
Soldier: Forward! ☞ 진격 앞으로!
BARBATUS: Come on. Let's kick some termite butts.
* butts : 궁둥이.

☞ muscles : 상대방 이름을 모르는 상황에서 “근육맨” 정도의 의미로 상대를 지칭한 말.
☞ You're making the rest of us look bad : 당신이 일을 너무 열심히 해서 우리들은 놀고 있는 것 같잖아요.
WEAVER: He's taking a personal day, so I'm filling in.
☞ take a personal day : 개인적인 하루를 가지다 --> 개인적인 일로 하루를 보내다.
* fill in : 대신 일하다.
AZTECA: You fill in / any more, and you'll explode. ... Eh, you got a problem?
☞ You fill in any more는 명령문. [명령문 and ... : --해라. 그러면 ...이다.]
* explode : 폭발하다. ☞ 여기서는 ‘너무 열심히 일해서 근육이 터지다’의 의미.
☞ “한번이라도 더, 남의 일 대신해 보세요. 그럼 그 근육 터져버리고 말 거예요.”
☞ You('ve) got a problem? 자신의 몸을 위아래로 훑어보는 Weaver에게 하는 말.
WEAVER: No, ah.. Nobody told me / digging was so much fun. You know, you pick the dirt up. You move it. You pick it up again. You move it again. Lots of reps. You exercise the arms and the thorax.
* dirt : =soil.
* reps : [口] =repetitions (esp. in weight lifting). ex) Do three sets of eight reps for the biceps (이두근).
* thorax : 흉곽; (곤충의) 흉부.
AZTECA: Yes, I.. I see what you mean.
Foreman: Um. Yeah. That is fascinating.
WEAVER: Sorry, sir. I was just having a little chat / with my friend, sir.
Foreman: You know, I just had a little chat / with General Mandible. Anybody / who doesn't meet his quota / is going to be downsized.
☞ meet his quota : 자신의 할당량을 채우다. ☞ 이 경우 meet은 ‘총족시키다’의 뜻. 여기서 his는 문법적으로 his or her가 옳음.
* downsize : 구조조정하다, 정리해고 하다.
AZTECA: Come on. Cut him a break. He's new.
* cut : --을 (남에게) 잘라주다. ex) Cut him a piece of cake.
* break : =another chance. ex) give sb. a break : 남을 너그러이 봐주다.
Foreman: Hey. What do you say / we help your attitude / a little bit / by taking away your rations / for the day. Thanks for your time.
* what do you say : --하면 어떨까? ☞ 앞에서도 배운 표현.
☞ help your attitude : ‘너의 태도를 혼내준다’는 속뜻을 가진 반어적 표현.
* take away : 없애다.
* ration : 정량; (식량 등의) 배급량.
* rations for the day : 오늘 배급량.
AZTECA: I don't know / what came over me, talking back / like that. I must be losing it.
☞ what come over me : 무엇이 내게 씌우다.
☞ talking back like that : 그런 식으로 말대꾸를 하면서.
☞ must : [강한 추측]
* lose it : [俗] 제 정신이 아니다.
WEAVER: Sorry I got you in trouble. But, listen, you can share my rations. Whoa. If you want ...
☞ I got you in trouble : 당신을 곤경에 이르게 했다 --> 나 때문에 난처해지다.

* ask sb. out to dinner : 저녁 식사에 초대하다.
WEAVER: Oh, no. I.. Well, if you don't have anything else planned.
☞ Oh, no. : no라고 하더니, 뒷부분에서 갑자기 태도를 바꿈.
AZTECA: I'll check my calendar. You know, I'm kinda glad / Z's taking a breather.
* kinda : kind of의 축약형.
* take a breather : (일을 마치고) 잠깐 쉬다.

첫댓글 이 영화에서 맨디블 장군은 악역이지만, 그의 대사는 정말 음미해볼만 합니다.
의욕적으로 DVD를 사긴 했는데 게으름이 자꾸...^^;;; 적은양이라도 매일 한다는게 대단한 일인거 같아요...생각보다 쉽진 않네요...주말반 열심히 듣고 있습니다...선생님 말씀대로 화이팅 하려구요...영어를 쓸수 있는 그날을 위해!!!
