원문 Rain/Water In "The Matrix," water is symbolic of the unconsciouness, the dream state of the Matrix. In movie, rain (or any falling object that mimics it) represents the code of the matrix, which is comprised of vertical columns of green symbols that appear to fall downwards. This theme of recreating the code in the matrix world is also taken a step further--most of the objects in the matrix are green or have a green tint to them as well. According to the Wachowski brothers, "[Don Davis] digitized raindrops against window panes tp create the sound of the matrix code." It is raining when Neo awakens from his "bug nightmare." When he goes to the Adams Street Bridge, the rain is pouring off of the bridge and we see the rain streaming down the back window when Neo gets inside of the car. Furthermore, we see the rain running down the side of the Lafayette Hotel (almost like a waterfall) where Neo goes to see Morpheus. In Mr. Rhineheart's office the window washers are cleaning the office windows. The soap and water bubbles slide down the glass and are wiped off in a downward motion. The sprinklers in the building where Morpheus is being held go off and it appears that it is raining in the building. The water is seen running down the side of this building as well. In the pod (which is similar to the womb), Neo is encased in water and has had no experiences of life outside of the matix. His removal from the matrix and the pod he is in is similar to a "birth" experience. According to Jung, birth is symbolic of a new phase in your personal development. Furthermore, the "A Dictionary of Dream Symbols" states that "birth can also represent the waking of the ego--that is, consciouness." When Neo is flushed out out of matrix pod, he ends up in a lake of water. In dreams, drowning represents the overwhelming fear of unconscious forces. In my opinion, the lake is representive of Neo's fear and shock of being pulled out of the matrix. He later succumbs to unconscious forces and passes out (falls asleep) after violently pulling himself out of the contruct. We see the sweat slide down the top of Morpheus's head and it looks like rain drops. The bullet casings that fall down from the helicopter seem to look like rain drops as well as the falling bullets that Neo stop in mid-air. In the lobby, the flying building debris as well as the hail of gunfire mimics falling rain. The same holds true for the pieces of wall that break away and fall down as Trinity pulls Neo down the wall of the hotel. There is a glass of water in Neo's apartment and of course, there is the glass of water that Neo drinks in order to swallow the red pill. Once again, water is a reminder that Neo is dreaming--he is living in the matrix. When the helicopter hits the side of the building, the pieces of glass fall down like rain in a downward motion. Neo's boss is named Mr. Rhineheart. Interestly, when I looked up the word "rhine" in the dictionary it turns out to be a river (water) Trinity finds an exit on the corner of "Wells and Lake". A well contains water and a lake is made up of water. Two other streets mentioned in the movies (Walbash and Balboa) have water connections too. In 1513, the Spanish explorer, Balboa, discovered the Pacific Ocean. The Walbash river flows through parts of Ohio and Indiana before joining the Ohio River. When Neo stops the bullets in mid-air, they appear to moving through water. The word "tank" which is the name of one of the characters in the movie, also refers to water. Wachowski 형제에 의하면 음악을 담당한 Don Davis가 창에 떨어지는 빗방울 소리를 디지털화하여 매트릭스 코드가 내는 소리로 사용하였다고 한다. 네오가 요원들에게 잡혀갔다 온 다음 잠에서 깰 때에도 비가 오고 있다. 아담스가 다리에서도 비가 내리고 있고 차안에 탔을 때에도 차창 밖으로 비가 내리고 있다. 모피어스를 만나러 간 라파예트 호텔에서는 비오는 모습이 마치 폭포수처럼 보인다. 직장 상사인 라인하트의 사무실 창문을 청소부들이 닦고 있는데 거품이 느리게 흘러내리면서 아래 방향으로 닦아 내린다. 모피어스가 잡혀 있던 정부건물의 스프링클러가 작동하여 비처럼 쏟아붓는다. 그 물은 바닥에 넘쳐서 뚫린 유리창을 통해 빌딩 벽을 타고 폭포처럼 흘러 내린다. 네오가 깨어나는 발전소의 고치 속에는 끈끈한 액체가 차 있다. 네오는 그때까지 매트릭스 밖으로 나온 적이 없고 고치를 깨고 나오는 모습은 '탄생'과 유사하다. 융(Jung)에 의하면 탄생이란 인생의 새로운 장으로 나오는 것을 말한다고 한다. <A Dictionary of Dream Symbols>에서는 탄생을 '자아를 깨닫는 것'이라고 한다. 고치에서 하수관을 통해 쏟아진 네오는 연못으로 빠진다. 꿈에서 '물에 빠지는 것'은 무의식적인 힘에 압도되는 두려움을 뜻한다. Dew의 의견은 네오가 그동안 살던 매트릭스에서 탈락되는 두려움을 표현한 것이라고 한다. 체포된 모피어스의 대머리에서도 땀방울이 흘러내린다. ^^; 네오가 헬리콥터에서 쏟아내는 탄피도 비처럼 쏟아진다. 또 그가 부활한 뒤 멈추게 한 총알도 비처럼 쏟아진다. 정부건물 로비총격씬에서 이리저리 튀는 파편과 무수한 총알세례도 비를 닮았다. 하수관을 따라 네오와 트리니티가 미끄러질 때에 쏟아지는 벽면의 파편도 마찬가지이다. 네오의 아파트에 물잔이 있고 모피어스가 준 빨간 알약을 먹을 때에도 물잔이 있다. 물과 함께 있다는 것은 그가 아직도 꿈구고 있다는 것, 즉 아직도 매트릭스의 세계에 있다는 것을 나타낸다. 네오의 직장상사 이름은 'Rhineheart'이다. Rhine은 독일 라인(Rhein)강의 영어식 철자이다. 트리니티가 탈출구를 찾는 곳은 'Wells and Lake'이다. Well은 우물이라는 뜻이고 Lake는 호수라는 뜻이다. Lake가는 네오가 핸드폰으로 탱크를 부르는 장면에서 나온다. Wabash와 Balboa라는 거리 이름도 모두 물과 관련이 있다. Wabash는 오하이오주 서부의 그랜드호에서 발원하여 오하이오강으로 흘러드는 강이다. Balboa는 파나마 파나마주(州)에 있는 도시로 1513년에 태평양을 발견한 발보아를 기념해서 명명되었다.
