< 영어 sale의 어원 >

판매, 매매 등을 뜻하는 영어의 "sale"을 라틴어나 독일어식으로 읽어보면 좀 당황하게 된다. "살레?" 우리말의 살래? 안살래? 즉, 매매할래?와 뜻이 같아진다. 어찌된 영문인지 살펴보자.

* 영어어원 사전을 요약하면 sale은 고대영어에서는 sala였는데, 이는 고대 스칸디나비아어의 sale나 게르만어의 조상어인 salo 또는 sal-을 어근으로 하는 인도유럽어족에서 파생되었다. 영어어원사전으로는 인도유럽어족의 "sal-"에서 sale의 어원을 찾을 수 있다는 설명 정도에 만족하고, 인도유럽어족의 조상어인 산스크리트어에서 sale의 어원을 찾아보자.

산스크리트어에서는 다음과 같은 말이 사용되는데 모두가 우리말 그 자체이다. 특히 충청도 사투리인 사나유?가 살래?와 동일한 의미로 사용되고 있는 점이 흥미롭다. 

* 살래? 살래야? =sale, saleya (=wishing, desirous of buying goods, merchandise)
* 사나유? = sanayuh (=hoping to buy, wishing to purchase)
* 사니? = sani (=acquiring, procuring, buying, purchasing)
* 사다 = sa^dha (=buy, purchase, achieve)
* 산다, 사다 = san-da, s'ada (=buy& sell, trade, exchange, buy, sell, gain)

결론적으로 영어의 "sale"은 우리말 "살래 (살레)"에서 파생된 말임이 분명하다.
