Yellow dust" is the falling sand which is elevated high by wind and spreads in the atmosphere. The oldest record of yellow dust in Korean history can be found in 'The history of three countries' and according to this book, the first record of yellow dust was A.D. 174.
Yellow dust was not made by a leader's political mistake as many old people thought. To make yellow dust, firstly, there should be lots of sand dust under 20㎛ and then, there must be wind strong enough to fly the sand dust in the air. Traditionally, the areas where yellow dust is made, are Gobi Desert and Takla Makan Desert. However, due to the recent galloping desertification in Mongolian grasslands, strong yellow dust is created in this area, too.
Yellow dust causes enormous damage to our health and industries. In March 2002, there were huge bad effects on whole industries because of strong yellow dust. Yellow dust caused problems to the operation of precision machines such as semi-conductors, aircrafts. The absence rate of field workers increased up to 30% and defective products in the semi-conductor industry increased. Nevertheless, there was 100% full operation of air cleaners in manufacturing plants.
The frequency and intensity of yellow dust has rapidly increased since 1990s.
To prevent the yellow dust, what should we do? We can help China to prevent desertification. It is difficult for the dry zones such as Gobi and Takla Makan Desert to have effects because these areas have only 30mm rain a year. However, Mongolian glasslands or Northern China's glasslands have 400mm rain a year and it means that we can keep trees and the glass alive. These days, desertification comes from the excessive livestock grazing. Therefore, the desirable control in livestock grazing and planting trees will ease off this yellow dust someday.
