Don’t Be Tied Down
by Kim So-young, Editor-in-chief, rlathrhd1313@mju.ac.kr
An eventful year has passed and a new one has come. On December 31st, there is something that I do to bid adieu to the previous year and greet the new year: I make three resolutions or goals that must be accomplished during the new year. When I was young, I usually wrote ten or twenty things, but before I knew it, I wrote only three things. Achieving three things feels like a proper amount and if I accomplish these three things, I can always remember having are warding year.
However, starting from this year I will write just one thing. Whether I achieve more than that or not won’t influence my life. Actually, I might just need the numerical goal, even though that number won’t affect my life or happiness.
I think sometimes we forget important things in a world dominated by numbers. In the world of numbers, some examples being exam grades, school levels, and salary, what we consistently feel is that large numbers aren’t a representation of our life. So, the one thing that I will write on December 31st is to NOT BE TIED DOWN BY NUMBERS.
We are all tied down by something. Numbers, time, or someone, whatever it is, the most important thing is that we don’t need to be bound. To be tied down is tough physically and psychologically. I want everyone to dwell on something that is tying you down. Take off that tie and feel free!

Myongji SNS Community
by Yoon So-young, Society Editor, yoonsyng@mju.ac.kr
by Son Hee-jeong, Society Reporter, shjsb88j@mju.ac.kr
Almost all students visit the internet when they have some questions. The official university home page has almost all the information and news such as university notices, schedules, and so on. However, it is not enough to rely on only the official home page. The SNS community introduces many school events, class evaluations, notices from the student union, and so on. These pages are more practical and convenient. MJP will introduce some of these useful SNS pages, so let’s take a look.
1. Class evaluation site
When students make their school schedules, there is some information which needs to be addressed about the composition of the class and the professor’s teaching style. If you want information about some class you have not heard about, it is a good idea to use this Myongji class evaluation site. You can get any class evaluation you want if you fill in 2 class evaluations that you have previously taken.
2. Myongji World
Myongji World is a Facebook page introducing Myongi university’s commercial district. This district is from Myongi university and Myongji college to Myongji Middle and High School. Also, it introduces all types of stores indiscriminately, from hair salons to stationery stores. Sometime there are some events and store promotions on this page. It provides very practical information to students
3.明Community
明Community is Myongji University’s official home page. It is a place for communication, from having a chat to exchanging useful information by bringing Myongji students together. Students can ask questions about university life and deal with used school books and so on. Also they can subscribe to recent school notices and the media center’s contents. (The MJP news paper is also provided online.)
4. Student Body Page
Almost every college and department has their own Facebook page. Among others, there is a page for the student body, which manages our school. The student body page gives notices about school events being held or major updates in our schedules. And also, it shows the present condition of activities for students. Students will not miss school news if they use this page.
5. Exchange Students Community
Not only Facebook pages but Facebook groups are also useful. In the ‘Myongji University Exchange Student Community’, those who are interested in exchange students and who are participating in student exchange programs share information and experiences about such topics. There are lots of participation comments, so if you are interested in exchange students and exchange programs, join the group.
6. Myongji Library Page
When you access our library Facebook page, ‘Mju lib’, you can receive event notices or general notice about the library. They usually upload movie screening notices and library service hour. So, it will be useful for students who use the library frequently. Also Facebook page, ‘Mju lac’, uploads information about finding missing articles or events being held in library..
7. Green Campus & Society Volunteer Page
The Mju Green Campus page represents one of the vigorous organizations of our school ‘Green Campus Keeper’. Students can easily event information held by Green Campus Keeper. They usually hold eco friendly campaigns such as making ego bags, planting herb seeds, etc. Profits are made by campaigns are donated to charity organizations.
Isn’t it an inconvenience to let useful information go? Let’s not miss our school’s useful information by using the student’s SNS community pages.

[Pop Up] Low-Budget Films: Now Playing Culture Desk Low-budget film? It literally means films that cost less money. Instead of picking a high-priced star and advertising support to lure audiences, it utilizes below average production costs and picks unknown actors. In Korea, a film that costs 1 to 2 billion won is a small-budget film. 3 to 10 billion won is the average, and over 10 billion won is a big-budget film. However, smaller films of Korea abandon a quite important role. What is obstructing the development of low-budget films? If they give up the inducement to attract audiences and the commercials which big-budgets use for their strength, then what should the low-budget films use? Of course, there are few breakthroughs without creative plans, and fresh direction. Or, the power of people and ideas overcome inferior conditions. Though smaller films have perfection and possible directional ability, the inferior conditions hinder their progress. Another problem with the system is performance fees for actors can't be adjusted realistically depending on the character and the budget of film. To produce a low-budget movie, not only the salary, but personnel expenses of the crew and shooting dates should also be considered. In spite of well-made films with small budgets, lastly, what if there is no audience to watch them? What if the Korean movie market that makes audiences accommodate various kinds of movies doesn't grow? Unfortunately, the spectrum of the Korean movie is too vulnerable to accept the variety and experimental nature of low-budget films. These days, it is easy to encounter movies which cost tens of billions or even hundreds of billions. High-budget movies are constantly appearing with higher manufacturing techniques and increased paychecks for the actors. But, blockbuster movies aren't always a box office hit. We can frequently see films being ignored despite the big budget and high marketing expenses. However, there are low-budget films which are beloved by audiences and the movie world. What leads these to success? <Korea’s Successful Low-Budget Films> 1. Alice in Earnestland, 2014 "Alice in Earnestland" did not spend much money for promotion and only used 200 million won in production costs, but got awards from the Jeon-ju International Film Festival last May and has been invited to the Vancouver International Film Festival. This is a grim and comical paradox of the social structure problem in which an earnest person lives a harder life than those who are not. Especially Lee Jung-hyun who played the main character without receiving any appearance fees, was spotlighted by critics and audiences because of her performance. She is also part of the main reason why this movie is even in the box-office. 2. Unbowed, 2011 Only 500 million won went into "Unbowed," but it amazingly ended with almost 3.5 million viewers and earned 25.6 billion. It made a huge profit for a low-budget film, showing that these kinds of small films have the possibility of success. It is a memorable film for its cinematic brilliance and it being full of cinematic rhythm. In addition, the veteran movie director, Jung Ji-young’s critical mind and production ability which has developed well over the years made the film successful. This film was highly acclaimed for both its cinematic quality and its popularity. 3. Delighted? Delighted!, 2010 "Delighted? Delighted!" was made with a low budget, 800 million won, and only played at 286 cinemas, but it showed that a well-made comedy can truly appeal to movie fans. It was promoted naturally through word-of-mouth because of its story line. The audience may have felt uncomfortable due to the subject matter being about workers from Southeast Asia, because they had previously just closed their eyes to the unfair treatment, low wages, and violence. However, this movie brought laughter and touched people’s emotions through the story of the main character who pretends to be a foreign worker. Abroad, "La Famille Belier," "The Gallows," "Saw," and other successful low budget movies covered a wide variety of genres, from documentaries to comedies and from theater style dramas to musicals. In Korea, however, it is a long road to success with a low-budget since it is not able to cast a film star, staff, and expensive equipment, so the degree of completion depends on the creator. Also, the audience’s interest is needed. Starting from now, for the development of Korea’s movie world, MJP hopes our Myongji university students to have a little more interest in low-budget films. |

[Investigative Report]
Unification
by Son Hee-jeong, Society Reporter, shjshj88@mju.ac.kr
by Hong Ji-won, International Reporter, kksmskk@mju.ac.kr
The constitution of Korea is based on a premise that aims for peaceful unification. Also, the constitution states that it is necessary to reach unification someday. Korea is a divided country, so there are frequent cases to foster the nation’s anxiety. Last August, tension was raised between South and North Korea. Fortunately, it finished after a long conference. But for decades, situations like this have occurred constantly and there is no assurance that it will not happen again. Thus, awareness of unification gets higher as days go by, and there are various kinds of opinions about unification.
The estimated cost when Korea unifies is about 2 billion won per capita for 30years. Also, an American investment bank estimates that Korean unification costs for a decade would be about 4,000trillion won. In the case of Germany, they had weaknesses as well as advantages. Germany’s unification cost was about 3000trillion won and it had more difficulties because it happened in a very short time. During the process of monetary integration, there were lots of East German companies that failed and it led to unemployment problems. West Germany’s economic scale was four times larger than East Germany’s and East Germany was a typical communist country. By contrast, South Korea’s economic scale is 20times larger than North Korea’s, and it is hard to say whether North Korea is typical communist country. Therefore, if Korea unified, there would be much more difficulties than expected. For instance, it would be hard to overcome cultural differences and ideological differences that have been made by a decades-long division. People say that it would disappear as time went by, but nobody knows how long it would take.
What are the advantages if Korea unified? First of all, if Korea unified we wouldn’t need division costs. Division cost is money that is caused by the division of the state, such as military expenditures. A huge budget is wasted by maintaining the system and diplomacy costs could be saved if Korea unified. If many labor forces worked in that field participate in economic activity, Korea’s productivity and the national economy would increase, and it would lead to the rise of national welfare. And, experts said that investment would increase because the instability factor of Korea would be gone. Viewing unification from a long term perspective, it is very beneficial because there will be more job creation and use of resources. It looks like a loss now, but eventually it would be an investment cost for our nation’s development. Also, if Korea unified, the total population will increase to 70million and it would lead to the expansion of economic size as well as the gathering of the North’s resources and the South’s technology. Finally, if Korea unified, we could accomplish a normal ethnic independent nation. At the same time, the global positioning of Korea would be much different compared to a division state.
The way to unification can be classified into three categories. There is unification by absorption, peaceful unification, and unification by war. First, unification by absorption means one gives up their own system, and adjusts to another's system when the two different systems become unified. A typical example is the unification of Germany. East Germany absorbed West Germany’s democracy and capitalism. The second way is peaceful unification. It means having an agreement together and not using military force. South Korea also pursues peaceful unification, but solid security is needed beforehand. Finally, unification by war is the complete opposite of peaceful unification. Some typical examples are Vietnam and Yemen.
Then, what do Koreans think about unification? We did a survey to find out.
Q1. Do you think unification must be done?
a. yes b. no
⇨ Question for 'yes' answer.
q1. Why do you think unification must be done?
a. separated families b. territorial expansion c. recovery of people's identities d. financial advantage e. solution to the danger of war f. other reason
⇨Question for 'no' answer.
q2. Why did you pick 'no'?
a. cost of unification b. conflict of ideology c. confusion of society d. political conflict e. other reason
Q2. If Korea were to be unified, which method should we use?
a. peaceful unification b. unification by force c. unification by absorption d. just exchange after ending the war e. other method
Q3. Do you think unification is beneficial for the long term?
a. yes b. no. c. don't know
Q4. What is the biggest obstacle in unification?
a. military treatment of North Korea b. repulsion by North Korea’s system c. indifference about unification d. other obstacle
According to the survey, people think about unification almost uniformly. The financial advantage is the biggest reason why we have to have unification. Recovery of people's identities and a solution to the danger of war are the same at 20%. Against unification, the cost of unification is the biggest reason why we shouldn’t unify at 36.4%.
Confusion of society is the next biggest reason at 27.3%. Unexpectedly, political conflict was the least picked. And surprisingly in the answer about the best way of unification, peaceful unification and absorption were almost the same. This shows us about half of South Koreans think they are better than North Koreans. People said the repulsion by North Korea’s system is the biggest obstacles in unification. So, we need a better understanding of each other and attempt to try for mutual cooperation.
As long as Korea is a divided country, unification will continuously be a hot issue. The present condition of Korea's unification makes it hard to be optimistic or pessimistic. If unification were to accomplished, Korea would have difficulties with different ideas, politics, and economies. So, we have to use this time to prepare, and wisely seek other ways. Also, we need to open up and cooperate when discussing North Korea’s economy.

Anthropolatry
by Yoon So-young, Society Editor, yoonsyng@mju@mju.ac.kr
by Seong So-won, Cultural Reporter, ntnss@mju.ac.kr
by Hong Ji-won, International Reporter, kksmskk@mju.ac.kr
For a long time, humans have taken advantage of the shelter provided from nature and the Earth. However, human conceit is so high they have tried to be the most advanced being and have tried to control the Earth. It is only for the prosperity of people. In the process, many beings suffer and sometimes die. Ultimately, now humans seem to rule all things. But, we need to suspect whether humans have shown advanced behavior towards nature or not.
Creation and Extension of Life
Advancement of science and technology has reached the creation of life. A typical example is artificial insemination. This operation makes an infertile couple successfully pregnant with a child. However, there is not only a positive side. Artificial insemination costs a tremendous amount of money and there are few cases where artificial insemination is a success at first. Also, during the surgery, women ruin their health. Furthermore, infertile couples are likely to have plural pregnancy during artificial insemination. The unborn children have to share a certain amount of nourishment from the mother so they may have a lower birth weight or be born prematurely.
Human Clones - Since Dolly was cloned from an adult somatic cell, the sheep’s birth being in 1996, scientists have cloned other species, including cattle, mice, goats, and pigs from all areas of the world. Following this path, a cloned cow named Young-long and a cloned Korean native cow called Jin-e were created in 1996 domestically. Somatic cell cloning uses technology to take the tissue from an existing being and conceiving a whole new being from it. It follows the principle that if you remove the egg's nucleus from another being’s cello into a somatic cell, it can create a clone. So, somatic cell cloning can create a creature without the fertilization of sperm-egg binding. An egg cell can make a human clone which matches up with a genetic trait by using a cell from such things as fingernails and, strands of hair. Since 2005 there has been international discussion about the prohibition of human cloning. There has been no progress on clone for study, known as therapeutic cloning, for diseases such as diabetes, and Alzheimer's due to the different views on the subject..
Extension of Llife – The wish to live a long life without disease is a dream that has lasted from prehistoric times to the present. For example, the King of Qin, who united the different parts of China into one country, sent his liege, S-buk, to Bong-rae Island, which is far in the East, to obtaining an elixir of life. Also, many people who wanted to escape from death had an empty dream because of a legend that there was an elixir of life in a whale. Likewise, in ancient times, there were so many people who searched for a phoenix, which happened to be the only one in the world, due to the desire to live longer. Regardless of Eastern and Western histories, the effort for prolonging life is the desire to have an extended time in this world, so all ways and means are used. Finally, at the beginning of the 20th century, the average life span was significantly increased due to many breakthroughs in physical and life sciences, such as the discovery of penicillin. In the case of Korea, the average life span was 31 years of age in the 1930’s but 81.4 in 2015. Korean’s life spans have increased more than 50 years of age.
Genetically Modified Food(GMO) – Have you heard about banana seeds? Bananas are manipulated through asexually plant breeding. If wild bananas have seeds, then, how can a seedless banana be produced? It is produced using the method of ‘grafting,’ which is attaching the stems of different plants and producing the same breed. Humans have tried to control everything they can benefit from, as well as the creation and extension of human beings.
Death of Life
Human beings are also involved in death. Abortion and euthanasia are examples. Abortion is to terminate a pregnancy artificially before the fetus has become viable. It is divided into therapeutic abortion and selective abortion, but the majority belong to the latter. Catholics have opposed it and proclaim "Abortion is an ethical disorder, and it is a crime any law of men can't justify along with euthanasia."
Euthanasia is to release a patient from his or her torments by stopping treatment and allowing them to die. The English word 'euthanasia' originates from a Latin word meaning 'good death.'
In the Middle Ages, life belonged to God's realm and human hands shouldn't have intervened indiscreetly. So, euthanasia was murder and subject to punishment. Late in the 18th century, however, the mentality that has accepted euthanasia for saving people from pain, arose from rationalism and advances in medical science.
Extinction - Human beings weren’t considerate of other species but for their own prosperity, and for that reason many kinds of animals have disappeared. The best example is the dodo bird. The dodo was endemic to the island of Mauritius, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The dodo didn't need to fly because there was no natural enemy there, so it was flightless. In the 17th century, however, the Spanish arrived to Mauritius. Like many animals that evolved in isolation from significant predators, the dodo was entirely fearless of humans. This fearlessness and its inability to fly made the dodo easy prey for sailors. Moreover, other animals people brought like pigs, rats, and macaques plundered dodo nests and ate dodo eggs. In the end, the dodo died out.
Another example is the bluebuck and Steller's Sea Cow. First, the bluebuck inhabited in South Africa and its population was small. The experts said that they were highly vulnerable to extinction in the law of the jungle because of its blue eyes and fur. And when the Dutch introduced sheep and cows to settle a colony, many bluebucks starved to death. Also, it encountered extreme hunting to take the rare fur. So, they became extinct in 1800.
The Steller's Sea Cow was found by a Steller expedition during his exploration. The meat of the sea cow weighed 3 tons, so wrecked sailors had more than enough to eat for 3 days. When this information became known, people began to hunt. The sea cows were fearless to people, and they are too kind to run away leaving behind friends. They also couldn't submerge and were not good at swimming. In the end, Steller's Sea Cow went extinct in 27 years.
Side Effects
Global Warming - Many problems have appeared by human’s attempt to control everything. One is global warming, first observed in the late 19th century. The cause is an increase of greenhouse gases. Fossil fuels like oil and coal is used by industrial development and forests were destructed by agriculture development. This has led to the greenhouse effect. IPCC (Inter-government Panel on Climate Change) said, "until the first half of the 20th century, natural activity aroused warming, but from the late 20th century, human activity has done it."
Disturbance of Ecosystems - Failures from controlling also exist. For example, Korea imported bullfrogs and nutria for edible purposes. However, they didn't make enough profits, so were released indiscreetly, and increased exponentially. They destroyed the ecosystem by decreasing the amount of native animals and plants. Bullfrogs eat green frogs, rats, and even snakes out of the natural food chain. And nutria has no natural enemies and are prolific.
Xeno-disability - White tigers appeared because of a hereditary characteristic modification of Bengal and Siberian tigers. The probability to bear a white tiger in the wild is 1/10,000 for Bengals and 1/100,000 for Siberians. All white tigers on display in zoos are born by inbreeding, and most of those are not purebred. Genetic mutation, which makes the fur white, also causes other genetic defects. They are born to be cross-eyed, cleft lipped, taliped (crooked paw). Besides, it leads to have scoliosis, and have a deficiency in the splanchnic organs. Under these circumstances, the propagation of white tigers still continues and the majority of them have a hereditary disease. They usually die at birth or become a throw-away tiger.
Dogs are in a similar situation. Pedigree dogs are regarded as good and healthy dogs, but they aren't. In fact, the notion 'purebred' emerged in the 19th century when eugenics was popular in England. This means the purebred that we know is not 'purebred' and the breed doesn't exist at all. To produce pedigree dogs, they have be inbred and their health is at risk. In the case of bulldogs, they can't breathe well because of their bashed-in muzzle. They can also only bear puppies by cesarean operation because their heads are too big. Furthermore, every bulldog suffers from hip dysplasia and the average life span is only 6 years. Insistence of human beings on which dogs to have in order to satisfy our criteria makes the dogs die painfully.
Predicting the Future
Nowadays, the Earth is damaged by human hands. The experts anticipate the power of humans on Earth to grow as population grows, consumption increases, and science technology develops. Albert Einstein anticipated that the honeybee’s disappearance would lead to the fall of the human race. Because entomophilous flowers that depend on honeybees are at about 80% of the total, then over 1/3 of the food humans eat are related to honeybees.
Pessimists about the future say the Earth will deteriorate more and more while technology develops by desertification, destroying the ozone layer, and so on. The underground resources will be exhausted and the earth will be polluted.
And, movies based on the Earth’s destruction are premiered a lot. Moreover, the name 'Post Apocalypse' was born and is the genre for destruction of Earth or humans. For example, a movie named 'Tomorrow' uses Earth’s destruction for the plot. To summarize, the North and South Poles are melting by rapid global warming, and the sea becomes cooler, and finally, all of the Earth is covered with glaciers. The movies named 'San Aandreas', 'The Road', and so on, also use the theme of Earth’s destruction. But, all disaster films do not use natural disaster as the cause. There are various reasons like infectious disease, invasion of aliens, geological events, and so on. All caused by human's excessive greed and human ignorance of nature's little signs. These movies also give us so much tension.
On the other hand, optimists about the future say humans can solve any difficult problems because humans have advanced technology, different from other living things. In reality, we have been solving various problems, like the recovery of the ozone layer and, using eco-friendly energy. Actually, we signed the Montreal Protocol treaty and have attempted to stop destroying the ozone layer. As a result, the destruction of the ozone layer has decreased since 1980. So some experts predict, after several years later, the ozone layer can recover to it’s previous state in the 1980’s.
Growing the average life expectancy and being an aging society has brought experts like John Harris from England to mention 'generation cleaning', which is an obligation to death. He also said, "a person who has lived enough time, needs to die for the future generation. That way can be suicide, euthanasia, or making the cell age at any particular moment." The writer, Bernard Werber used this material for his book "The Tree." And directors are also using 'generation cleaning' as subjects for movies, for example, 'Kingsman'. Valentine, the intelligent MIT graduate villain, contributed his money to solve the problem of global warming. But his solution to stopping global warming was to kill the vast majority of people around the world. He supported the 0.0001% top class and politicians, but finally they were killed inversely. Of course, this frightening way of thinking couldn't be real, but through these movies we acknowledge that the human race has changed a lot compared to the past.
The Earth and nature has been giving us a good place to live. But now, we have forgotten nature is something we have borrowed, not owned. So, we damage nature relentlessly as if we were its master. Earth is a precious place, not our own, and we have to turn it over to the future generation. If we see Earth through a wider perspective, not obsessed with current development, we can continuously make Earth a better place to live. As our nick name 'most enlightened souls' suggests, we have to show correct actions. We always consider others’ moods in daily life, likewise the human race has to consider Earth's condition. Do not forget that Earth's master is not us. Nature and humans live together on Earth with each other.

Daejeon Line 1
by Koh Eun-bi, Culture Editor, eb5134@mju.ac.kr

Seoul is the capital of Korea and most people live in Seoul, so it is very crowded and busy every day. Our Myongji University students may feel the need to travel outside of Seoul to relieve stress, but many of them hesitate because of time and the cost. Therefore, the Myongji Press (following MJP) recommends Daejeon, which takes only 2-3 hours from Seoul by express bus or Mugunghwa-ho. Let’s break from the routine and travel!
The subway in Daejeon has only one line, so it takes just 40 minutes to go right to the end. Compared to the Seoul Metro, the subway size is really small and the single-use ticket is also different. They use plastic coins instead of the plastic metro cards used for one-way tickets in Seoul. The price is 1,400 or 1,500won depending on the distance. When you enter, pass the plastic coin over a scanner at the ticket gates and just put it in the slot when you get out. Just try it since it is not available in the Seoul Metro.
Daejeon Station:
1. Daejeon Jungang Market
When you come out of exit2 there will be the Daejeon Jungang Market. It is not sure when the first market was held, but everyone in Daejeon loves this place. You can find everything you want, so you have to visit before you leave. If you have a hard time finding the way out just ask the vendors and they will answer very kindly. Sundae Street, Hanbok Street, and more, every street shows its characteristics.
Jungangno Station:
1. Sungsimdang
This place can be easily found at exit1 of Jungangno Station. When you ask people from Daejeon what the most famous thing in Daejeon is, people will directly answer with “Sungsimdang!” And when you ask them what’s good, they will reply with “Fried Soboro Bread”. Sungsimdang has 59 years of history and is worthy of its reputation. Customers are constantly coming on weekends as well as weekdays. There are a variety of breads which make your mouth water. Furthermore, you can also taste small pieces of bread for free all the time at the free-sample stands. In addition, there is the Sungsimdang cake boutique a minute’s walk away. Enough places to eat have been provided, so take some time to taste these beautiful cakes.
2. Daeheung-dong Catholic Church
Just out of Sungsimdang Street and across to the other side, you will find Daeheung-dong Catholic Church. Some people visit here to see the main Catholic church in Daejeon. The gothic-style architecture attracts the gaze of people in the city center. It is really close to the roadside, so it’s better to see the whole thing on the opposite side. With or without religion, it does not matter, go inside the chapel and close your eyes to pray shortly. The wide chapel and people in prayer will make you feel calm.
Yousung Spa Station:
Get out at exit 7 of Yousung Spa Station and pass a traffic light and you can see grandmothers and grandfathers sitting in clusters at a spa. Here is where you can find a foot bath experience. If you want to experience a foot bath, you simply just wash your feet. And don’t worry where you wash your feet. In front of the pool is a foot shower booth which provides hot mineral water. When you finish the spa, you can dry your feet with a drier. There are various pools, but all pools are almost the same. When you put your foot in a pool, you can feel the hot sparkling water. You may think water is too hot, but after a while you forget the temperature of the water and just fall into a drowsy mood. It’s like relieving all of your tiredness. Why don’t you go refresh your feet and mind at the Yousung Spa?
Deadong Station:
Get out at exit 7 of Deadong station and the road leads to Deadong Sky Park. Some cute and interesting murals on the road will bring you joy. Feel free to stop and take photos. Moreover, these interesting murals are very attractive to us who are surrounded by brown bricks. Also, you can see rose bushes in bloom from April to May. Don’t miss the windmill on top and the view of the landscape of Daejeon. That sight is so beautiful it gets rid of your tiredness. Daejeon’s buildings are not as high as Seoul’s, so you also feel the beauty of nature. And if you have a lover, you can fasten a lock of love as people do at Namsan Tower. I recommend you come here with your lover and not alone.
I recommend going to Daejeon, near Seoul, if you have plans for travel but don't know where to go because you can feel a relaxation that you can't have in Seoul. Daejeon is a place full of relaxing moods of nature. Go and return in one day or stay at a hotel, both are good ways to enjoy Daejeon. I wish for your tiredness to be relieved in Daejeon.

Sea of Death
Global Desk
On the shore of Turkey, there was a boy lying down with a peaceful face. But, that boy wasn’t breathing and had his eyes closed. His name was Aillan Kuredi and came from Syria last September. The boat that he rode was capsized in the Mediterranean and he drifted down to Turkey's shore. Many people were shocked about the three year-old kid's death, and they expressed sorrows using SNS. At the same time, they demanded humane responsibility to European countries. Why do refugees try to get out of their native countries with so much risk involved? Why do they go to Europe? And, what should we do to solve this problem?
1. Why do refugees risk their necks?
Let's find some reason why refugees try to get out of their countries. At first, Syria has the highest amount of refugees. But three years ago, Syria's refugee ranking was 40th around the world. What has changed in Syria? The answer is religious wars and conflict. In Syria, about 3/4th of the population is Sunni Muslim, and1/4th is Shia Muslims, including president Al Said. But due to the president's seizure of power, only a minority of Shia Muslims get power. And the Sunni Muslims started antigovernment demonstrations to get rid of Al Said. Moreover, the threat of IS makes even more refugees, and other North African refugees move to Europe to get a better quality of life. As many other refugees from North Africa, they move to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. They go to Europe through brokers from East Eeurop like Bulgaria and Romania. As the refugees are using an old and small boat, it is constantly over capacity with passengers. For example, one refugee boat was capsized moving from Libya to Italy because it had too many people. So, 200 refugees drowned in the Mediterranean. Moreover, deaths in the Mediterranean are increasing. Actually, according to the International Organization for Migration(IOM), almost 22,000 refugees have drowned in the Mediterranean. Consequently, the Mediterranean is called the Sea of Death now.
2. Why do refugees move to Europe?
The biggest reason is the 'Schengen Agreement' of Europe. The Schengen Agreement focuses on economic activation that simplifies procedures on immigration, making it easy for people to travel to the EU. Due to this agreement, we can travel to the EU without a visa, except for England and Ireland. Refugees also can travel to the EU freely when they get a refugee position in Europe. But, refugees request refugee positions in Germany or Sweden, not Greece, Hungary, or Austria where their first destination is. Because West Europe’s welfare is better. But, from now on they don't do that because of the 'Dublin Convention'. The Dublin Convention was made in the 1990's in the EU and it says refugees have to request a refugee position where their first destination is. So if a refugee requests a refugee position in their first destination, it is a violation of international law.
However, after the death of Kuredi, Germany put aside the Dublin Convention for refugees. As a result, many refugees tried to move to Germany. Munich, Germany, received almost 12,000 refugees a day. Eventually, Germany had to stop taking refugees.
3. What should we do about the endless number of refugees?
Refugees need the world's care because of danger in their native countries. But the problem is the local residents’ welfare, which is given to refugees. And, nowadays, many European countries are undergoing an economic depression. For example, the England government changed the standard for visas and foreigner’s length of stay to keep local resident jobs. So, Europe needs to make a policy and alternative for refugees. The EU suggests 'quota refugees' as an alternative. The EU's executive committee suggested accommodating 16,000 refugees by dispersing. But, Eastern Europe refuses the 'quota refugees' suggestion, while Western Europe supports it.
One Syrian refugee boy's interview was issued during Europe's passive participation of accommodation. He said, "we don’t want to live in Europe, we just want the war to be stopped." To solve the Syrian refugee problem, we need to continue to be concerned not only about Europe, but also every country. But before anything else, it should be based on understanding their conditions.

Male Dominated Broadcast Circles
by Son Hee-jeong, Society Reporter, shjshj88@mju.ac.kr
Let’s think about popular TV programs these days. Superman Comes Back, Leave Alone, Infinite Challenge, etc. Did you find anything in common with them? All they have in common is the main cast members being men. At one time, we can rarely see a program that is focused on women, and programs that are focused on men are preponderant these days. Now, let’s take a look at the male dominated phenomenon in the broadcast circles.
Male-centered programs that portray their own stories are predominantly being broadcasted. The main character who leads the program is almost always male, and the few women that appear on the programs do not play major roles. Also, considering that the women-centered programs (such as Infinite Girls and Youth Never Lose) did not make a splash, the successful TV entertainment programs are all male-centered. It’s a simple reason why. In the case of variety shows, most of them require long shooting times and a high output of physical energy, so producers naturally prefer men. Compared to men, it is not as easy to put women in a variety show.
It seems that the golden days of male casts will continue, despite the indication that there are too many male centered programs. So, is it hard for them to produce women-centered programs? For this question, Jung Hee-seop, who is CP at KBS entertainment said, “Chances of success are much higher when we gather male casts. Female casts have a limitation in reality shows because they are concerned about their appearances.” And another entertainment program PD said that when viewers watch the female cast’s behavior without pretense, they think their behavior is pretentious. Also, he adds that because female viewers are interested in male reality shows, men-centered programs are comfortable ways to get stable ratings. Furthermore, an interested person of SBS entertainment said, “Male cast’s behavior is dynamic even though their behaviors are trivial. So that’s why we prefer male casts.”
The golden days of male casts are related to the viewer’s thoughts and opinions. The production crew usually sets women as the main viewers. Women seek men-centered programs which are unfamiliar to them rather than women-centered programs which are familiar. Production crews fully understand women’s emotions. We can mention one example for this, we can mention ‘Dad Where We Go?,’ which is the first male childcare variety show. In modern society, the father’s role in the family is to take responsibility of the household economy. This parental role causes problems of not having enough time to spend with their children. As a result, dads hanging out with kids become fewer and fewer. According to an investigation of employment conditions, our society’s average working hours is about 72hours per week. It makes fathers not spend much time with their children. So women a have considerable longing for a family man, and the production crew includes a show showing family men. That is what women want to see the most, but cannot find easily in everyday life. Finally, it brings about a vicarious satisfaction for women, and can also act as an indirect experience about childcare.
The attention of women viewer reached its peak with ‘Grandfather over Flower’ and ‘Real Man’. These programs are focused on ‘newness.’ In ‘Grandfather over Flower’, four gray-headed old men are traveling all around the world together. It gives viewers both the longing for travel and impressions. Older men taking a trip, which can’t be seen easily, drew the attention women viewer’s. In fact, more than half of the total viewers are women viewers. ‘Real Man’ is focused on the basic interests of women about men. Women who have no knowledge of the army see men’s army life and they feed their curiosity about the world of men. Also, more than half of the total viewers of this program are women.
Like this, entertainment programs are focused on what viewers want to see and what viewers starve for. In other words, TV programs are mirrors of society and enable us to look back at our society’s basic values. Watching the process of dads who have no time hangs out with their children and the process of four gray-headed actors traveling all around the world, viewers satisfy their desire of how to enjoy their second life. Consequently, to remind us of the absence of the ideal male image, most entertainment programs are producing male-centered program. Also, producers are well aware of how to express and what to represent. Of course, in a situation where male-centered programs have prevailed, it is hard to take the initiative for female-centered programs. However, if society’s consciousness could change, as TV programs reflect the society, we can expect female centered programs to also have golden days.

The Humanities in Danger
Society Desk
Not long ago, the Minister of Education said that we should first solve the unemployment problems and then think of the humanities as knowledge for employment. His remarks are to the effect that employment should be concerned first, then the humanities. Of course, that comment can be recognized as anxiety and concern for students who suffer from the unemployment crisis. The comments that just are concerned about employment only; however, it seems the Ministry treats the university as a job training school. Now, the humanities are quickly losing their ground to more practical studies with development of capitalism and businesses centered thought. It does not simply mean that a single academic system is faced facing risk, but a situation where humans and civilization alienating other humans is becoming usual and general.
The humanities are foundational studies that are aimed at human’s culture as well as ideas and searches for value of humans through thought. The humanities have been ignored for a while because they cannot accord with practical values and the efficiency of neo-liberalism that capitalism requires. But these days, the value of the humanities is shedding a new light. Steve jobs who led Apple’s success said, “when humanity combines with technology, it creates touching results,” highlighting the importance of the humanities. Also, the interest in humanities is rising among local companies. In reality, however, it is hard to find a successful employment story of people who major in humanities. What causes this situation?
Change in the industrial structure plays a big role in putting the humanities at risk. Industry sections such as IT and, the automobile industry are dominating the mainstream, so relatively there are few chances for people who major in humanities. The few jobs for humanities specialists such as marketing, accounting, and sales are being substituted by engineering specialists. For this reason, social perception has rooted that students who enter university to study humanities should double major in another subject for their employment. Even humanities and art, music, and physical departments are merged into practical departments which have higher employment rates. In reality, 55 arts and humanities departments have been abolished for the past three years and the humanities departments’ capacity has been gradually getting smaller and smaller. In contrast, the capacity of the department of engineering has expanded. It is a quite strange situation. Do Jong-hwan, an assemblyman from poet, said, “rapid economic development may bring material affluence, but makes a society that lacks introspection and consideration.”
According to the nation’s major companies’ current recruitment state investigation, most companies refuse to show the results of how many people are hired from each major because it is a personal matter. For example, Samsung hires people who major in natural sciences and engineering at about 85% of total new employees. For this, an interested person of Samsung said, “Because Samsung is an IT company, we have to hire more people who major in science and engineering.” There are some differences in each company, but generally, the rate of people who major in engineering and humanities was 8 to 2 or 9 to 1. Companies say that the reason for this situation is realism with industrial upgrading, specialized technology, and quick response to the global market are being criterion for weighing up success or not.
In fact, companies do not need the knowledge acquired through humanities itself. As I said, Steve Jobs addressed the importance of humanities saying, “when you combine humanity and technology, a stem-winding outcome is created.”’ Also, he backed up his words by saying, “humanistic figures like Plato, Homer, and Kafka are the power of making APPLE.”’ So, where are they in Apple actually? Can they come out if we dismantle the iPhone and iPad? If not, have you ever seen a wise saying engravedon a product? Knowledge itself cannot be found in a product. Then, where is the humanities? The User Experience of Apple products, high dignity, creative development, technology combinations (multi-touch screen input function, app store, and so on), and marketing capability has the humanities. I mean to say, not humanistic knowledge but liberal arts knowledge achieved through studying the humanities builds on Apple’s success. Liberal arts knowledge such as ethics, morality, critical thinking, and creativity can only be developed and raised through studying the humanities.
Among other academics that are considered means of earning, the humanities maintains its pureness. It makes it possible to get a more open mindset and be a basic element to brush up on other studies. Also, t provides us with the right way and direction of life, which is the biggest reason why we should not ignore the humanities. On this account, humanities classes have recently boomed among people who lose their direction in life while expending time on finding a job.
Hopefully, the stream of times gradually changes. These days, technology alone cannot achieve differentiation and be an exclusive site. Advanced companies also have gradually decreased developing technology reducing the technology gap among companies. Humanistic research and development such as dignity, cultural contents, and stories makes a monopoly status of products and companies. But, companies also always searches for change. Existing with pure humanities alone makes it is hard to meet the needs of the digital era. Adjusting to communicate with society and the current era and resolving problems will help humanity to more develop more. Also, there needs to be a concern on how to remedy the university education system, which is considered as a gateway to finding jobs.
Park Maeng-ho, CEO, who is a figure of Korea Industry of Knowledge, said, “Without understanding humanity, it is the same as living without roots for their life.” He also addressed the importance of humanity by saying, “Society cannot help but be disturbed if it overemphasizes economic growth and development without the reflexivity of humanity.” Reflexivity of humanity is the supporting root of society. Likewise, if the social mood that has university not as the place to pursue education, but to be contaminated as a training place for jobs, then the humanities will continue to gets unkind treatment, and our society will be more confused. It is not the blind compulsion of humanity and the demand of the importance of academics. If people expanded their minds and had the power to explain themselves, our society would be affluent in many different fields as well as the spiritual aspects.

Is Curfew Necessary for adults?
by Yoon So-young, Society Editor, yoonsyng@mju.ac.kr
There are many cases where university students have grown out of childhood but still have a curfew. These students always complain about their curfews to their friends who do not have them. Is a curfew necessary for adults like teenagers?
University students are adults. They are old enough to get a driver’s license, drink, and smoke. Although they are free from social oppression, they take as much social responsibility as they want. It is clear that students are free from society and family. In contrast, they are never free from social crime. Even if students have become adults, the safety of adults cannot be guaranteed. Moreover,
University students who come home later are exposed to more danger than in their school days when they were teenagers. Even healthy men are becoming targets for criminals, in addition to the old and the infirm. The young and women are not the only targets anymore.
There are different opinions about student’s curfew hours. Is a curfew necessary for adults? Let’s interview 2 students who have different ideas and their parents, then share about their thoughts.
<Student 1>
▷Agree
1. Why do you think the curfew hour is necessary for students?
Nam Seung-ju, Freshman, Open major
Although I am a man, I have to come back home by midnight. It is not that compulsory, but as midnight gets closer, my telephone keeps ringing. My mother does not sleep but stays up until I reach home. Only then do they go to bed. At first, it was hard to understand why they did not sleep until I came home. However, once I put myself in their position for a moment, I could understand that my parents worry about their children’s health and future. So, I have tried to observe a curfew.
▷Parents
Even though my child has grown up to adulthood, I think my son is so young and causes me to feel anxious. I think all parents might be the same. When he’s drunk, it is hard to control himself and a potentially dangerous event might happen, dangerous even if he is a man. So, I make a push to come home early by setting a curfew. Particularly when I watch the news, I feel this way.
<Student 2>
▷Disagree
1. Why do you think a curfew is unnecessary for students?
Yeo Ham-byeul, Sophomore, Dept. of Law
I disagree with the student’s curfew. Parents are responsible for their children only under 20 years old. So, there should be no interference with adults' rights. A curfew time does not respect individuals and could infringe on freedom of privacy. The rights of the individual are the most important rights in a free society. Every human being has the right to freedom from oppression. Since people actually have a free-will choice, I am held accountable for my actions. It is injustice to control the behavior of adults and treat them like children. It is up to them to be responsible.
▷Parents
Since my child is a man and he is in his mid-20s, I have not set a compulsory curfew time. I believe he would behave in a responsible way because he is an adult. Frankly, I have not controlled my son because he is a man. Men are less common to become the target for criminals than women. If my child were a woman, I think I might set a curfew time.
We are presently living in a time of increased crime even in broad daylight. Moreover, playing late at night and come home alone is is very vulnerable situation forto crime. Curfew is not just oppression from parents but a means of safety. It is better to be home early for your safety as well as observing a curfew hourtime.

We Meat Again
By Koh Eun-bi, Culture Editor, eb5134@mju.ac.kr
Most of celebrities prefer to be a vegetarian, and they have high interests about it. It is highly noticed because of the health, environmental, personal problems, and other varieties of reasons. Accordingly, there are different types of vegetarians, which are lacto vegetarian, lacto-ovo vegetarian, ovo vegetarian, and vegan. These categories will help people choose what they can eat. But first, let’s take a look at the right information for vegetarians and the problems that can occur in the body.
Being a vegetarian teaches us to avoid meats and to eat only green leafy stuff. Moreover, being a carnivorous human being does not mean that we should only avoid eating meats but the things that animals produces like milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, their eggs, broths, seasonings and some condiments, and the worst part is you also can’t eat fish! However, for those non-strict vegetarians, they just avoid meats. These are the types of vegetarians.
Types Eating habits
lacto vegetarian Does not eat meat and eggs but eats dairy products. Easy to find in India and shores of the Mediterranean.
lacto-ovo vegetarian Does not eat meat but eats dairy products and eggs. Most of the vegetarians from the West are considered lacto-ovo vegetarians.
ovo vegetarian Does not eat meat and dairy products but eats eggs.
Vegan Does not eat any animal food products including meat, dairy products, and eggs.
Apart from these, we have many other types of vegetarians but strict vegans do not allow them to be called 'vegetarians.' First, 'semi-vegetarians' eat everything except red meat. This is usually used to appoint vegetarian starters. Second, ‘pesco-vegetarians’ do not eat most meat but eat fish and sea food. And lastly, ‘flexitarians’ primarily follow a plant-based diet but occasionally eat small amounts of meat, poultry, or fish.
In fact many people think that vegetarianism began recently, but it started in the past because of religious reasons in ancient India and Greece. So, it almost disappeared when ancient Rome chose Christianity as a state religion and spread again from the 19th century. For now, many people change their eating habits to vegetarian mostly for environmental and economical reasons. However, refraining from meat in the diet has some disadvantages. While vegetarianism is widely promoted as healthy, it is not easy for a vegetarian to obtain the nutrients needed for a healthy body. Particularly, women that do not eat meat for years get some warning signs about their health.
Almost one in ten vegetarians have an iron deficiency. Meat is a good source of iron and protein. And vegetarian diets lower the iron intake in the body causing tiredness and breathlessness. Also, vegans have a hard time getting vitamin B12. Some good sources of vitamin B12 are shellfish, liver, fish, red meat, and dairy products. But the only reliable unfortified sources of vitamin B12 are meat, dairy products, and eggs. If your body does not have enough of it, there is a high chance that the new hair that grows next will not contain pigment. Omega-3 fatty acids intake from meat is important, too. Omega-3 fat is good for healthy skin and hair, and strengthening the immune system. Most importantly, omega-3 fats make your brain more active.
Anyone who defends vegetarianism and claims it provides sufficient nutrition is very badly informed and doesn't know the real nutritional values of foods. Studies have shown that vegan and poorly planned vegetarian diets are prone to deficiencies of important nutrients. For example, red meat is an important source of iron, which contains protein. So if your iron level is low, you may feel tired all the time. Therefore, the process of giving up meat in one's diet, as vegetarians want everyone to do, can create potential nutrient shortages in the body.
Not only in health but problems also occur in social life. When just starting to eat vegetarian meals, people may be happy with a fresh feeling and weight reduction. However, recognizing that people feel uncomfortable about not eating meat makes you have some kind of barrier around them.
If you are just trying to be a vegetarian because only health reasons, that is not the way to be healthy. It would be better eat meat again. Of course, there are people whose body really loves vegetarian meals but remember, if you want a healthy life after age 60 you should stop following vegetarian meal plans. Vegetarians have to know the importance of eating meat. Therefore, before you being vegetarian, you have to consider first.

Across the Universe
by Seong So-won, Cultural Reporter, ntnss@mju.ac.kr
This year, there have been frequent times to look up to the sky because the moon and the stars have been showing us their new looks. SNS and news portals are full stories of them this year, and on July 31st, the Blue Moon became the most searched subject on the Internet. We can predict what will happen when listening to words like Super Moon and Blood Moon. But somethings are not like them. Then let's look at the new looks of the moon and stars in 2015.
Super Moon
The moon revolves around the earth in an elliptical orbit ,like a circle. When the moon is closest to the earth and there is a full moon, it appears brighter and bigger than usual. The average distance between the earth and the moon is 384,000 km, and the Super Moon, if the moon reaches perigee, is only 357,000 km. The term 'Super Moon' is not used in astronomy, an astrologist made the term in 1979. When there is a Super Moon, the attraction of the moon to pull on the seawater of the Earth strengthens and the gap between flood and ebb widens to 19% larger than usual. However, it is unrelated to natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, and so on.
Blood Moon
The West calls a full moon during a total lunar eclipse, Blood Moon. When the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon are in alignment, the sun's ray inflected by Earth’s atmosphere reaches the moon's surface and makes it look red. In Western tradition, the Blood Moon is considered as an ominous sign connected with Christian roots. The Book of Revelation, in the Christian Bible, mentions the crack of doom with the Blood Moon.
Blue Moon
Blue Moon means the second full moon of a single month in the solar calendar. It is unrelated to the color. The cycle of the moon is 29.5 days, and a month is 30 or 31 days except February. For this reason, if the full moon rises on the first day of a month, it may rise again on 30th or 31st. Unlike the East, thinking of the full moon as a sign of prosperity, the West recognizes it as unlucky. In terms of where the word derived from, it started as an old English word, 'belewe', meaning 'betray,' and has same pronunciation with ‘blue’. As time went by, 'belewe' moon changed to 'blue' moon and that has been passed down until now.
Perseid Meteor Shower
The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks around August 12th, and we can watch the brightest meteor shower of the year. Depending on the region and luck, about 100-10,000 meteors an hour can be observed. It is the fragments of the Swift-Tuttle comet which orbits the sun. The meteors appear to spurt from the constellation Persues. This is why it is called the Perseid Meteor Shower.
The Earth is a big planet for us, but a small spot in the universe. We live in this spot, observe the sky, and dream of space. Especially new looks of the moon and stars, which have always been where they are, make us filled with joy. Now, you may be excited at how the sky and universe changes and what kinds of new looks they show, mayn’t you?
