누가 주의 마음을 알았느냐

하나님의 행하심은 사람들의 예상을 빗나가는 경우가 많습니다. 죄인을 의롭다하시고 어리석은 자를 지혜롭게, 약한 자를 강하게, 외로운 자에게 가족을, 가난한 자에게 부요함을 주시는 분이십니다. 마땅히 받아야 할 죄값을 묻지 않으시고 용서와 긍휼로 받아주십니다. 세상의 원리 곧 인과응보의 법칙이나 사필귀정의 논리가 하나님앞에서는 무색해집니다. 그리고 그 분의 과분한 은혜는 차별없이, 때로는 자격없는 자에게 주어집니다.

이방인의 충만한 수가 차기까지 이스라엘의 일부를 우둔하게 하셨다고 합니다. 마치 천국에 정원초과의 룰이 작용하는 것처럼 말씀하십니다. 그러나 하나님의 원리와 법칙은 우리가 측량할 만한 것이 아니며 주제넘은 짓입니다.(33절) 그리고 그 길을 찾는다고 해도 이해할 수 없습니다.(34절)

순종하지 아니함에 가두어 두심은 은혜를 베풀려하심이라고 하십니다. 자력구원이 불가능하다는 말입니다. 스스로 순종하여 구원의 길로 가는 사람에게는 십자가의 은혜와 용서의 사랑이 필요치 않습니다. 용서는 죄인에게나 필요한 것이며 의사는 건강한 자가 아니라 병자에게 필요합니다. 자신이 병자이며 죄인임을 깨닫는 자는 그 분의 긍휼과 용서를 감사함으로 받을 준비가 비로소 된 상태입니다.

먼저 부르신 자들 곧 이스라엘은 하나님의 마음 깊이 숨겨진 보물처럼 때로는 깊은 샘에서 나는 물처럼 그 분의 마음을 적십니다. 그들의 연약과 완악함과 방황함이 그 분의 마음에 형언할 수 없는 진노와 깊은 고통을 불러 일으킵니다. 하지만 그 분의 타오르는 분노는 그 만한 크기의 사랑임을 보여줍니다. 사랑이 이미 사라진 곳에 분노의 불길은 사그라 듭니다. 질투는 깊은 사랑의 또다른 표현이기 때문입니다. 그리고 그 분도 스스로를 "질투하는 하나님"이라고 말씀하십니다.

이방인을 찾고 또 찾으셨던 그 하나님께서 이제 이스라엘의 잃어버린 양들을 찾겠다고 선언하십니다. 바울의 동족을 향한 애끓는 마음을 통해 말씀하고 계십니다. 우리는 이방인이나 유대인이나 차별없이 사랑하시겠다는 아버지의 놀라운 사랑의 선언을 듣고 있습니다. 만물의 아버지, 만물의 주관자이시며 통치자이신 그 분께 영원한 영광을 돌려드립니다.

Who has known the mind of the Lord?

God’s ways often transcend human logic. He declares the guilty righteous, grants wisdom to the foolish, strength to the weak, family to the lonely, and abundance to the poor. He does not demand the penalty that sin deserves, but instead welcomes with mercy and forgiveness. The principles of this world—cause and effect, justice and retribution—lose their footing before Him. His grace, lavish and undeserved, flows freely, sometimes to those least expected.

Scripture tells us that a part of Israel was hardened until the full number of Gentiles comes in. It’s as if heaven operates under a mysterious threshold. Yet the divine logic behind this is beyond our grasp. To try to measure His ways is presumptuous (v.33), and even if we seek them, we cannot comprehend them (v.34).

He has bound all in disobedience so that He might show mercy. This reveals that salvation cannot be earned. Those who believe they can reach God through obedience alone have no need for the cross. But forgiveness is for sinners, and healing is for the sick. Only when one recognizes their brokenness and guilt are they truly ready to receive His mercy with gratitude.

Israel—the first to be called—is like a hidden treasure in God’s heart, like water drawn from a deep well that refreshes His soul. Their frailty, stubbornness, and wandering stir in Him a sorrow too deep for words. Yet His burning anger is proof of His immense love. Where love has died, anger fades. Jealousy, too, is a fierce expression‎ of love. And He declares Himself “a jealous God.”

Song of Songs 8:6
Place me like a seal upon your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like the very flame of the Lord.

The God who pursued the Gentiles now declares He will seek the lost sheep of Israel. Through Paul’s anguished longing for his people, God speaks. We hear the Father’s astonishing declaration: He loves both Jew and Gentile without distinction. To Him—the Father of all, the Sovereign over all, the Ruler of all—be eternal glory.
