The government has cleared the way for the introduction of ethanol-blended petrol, approving a policy that allows fuel sold in Nepal to contain up to 10 percent ethanol.

Following the Cabinet’s endorsement of the Order on Using Ethanol Blended Petrol, 2026 BS, the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) is now authorised to mix ethanol with petrol and distribute it in the domestic market, as per the media report.

네팔 내각이 2026년 에탄올 혼합 휘발유 사용에 관한 명령을 승인함에 따라 네팔 석유공사(NOC)는 이제 휘발유에 에탄올을 혼합하여 국내 시장에 유통할 수 있게 되었다고 언론이 보도했다

Nepal currently imports all of its petrol from India, where ethanol-blended fuel has been in use for years. Officials estimate that introducing a 10 percent ethanol blend could reduce petrol imports by around 73 million litres annually. At current import rates from Indian Oil Corporation, this could translate into savings of more than Rs 6 billion each year.

네팔은 현재 휘발유를 전량 인도에서 수입하고 있는데, 인도에서는 수년 전부터 에탄올 혼합 연료를 사용하고 있다. 관계자들은 에탄올 10% 혼합 연료를 도입하면 연간 휘발유 수입량을 약 7,300만 리터 줄일 수 있을 것으로 추산하고 있다. 인도 석유공사(IOC)로부터의 현재 수입량을 기준으로 하면 연간 60억 루피 이상의 비용 절감 효과를 볼 수 있다.

Nepal consumes roughly 2 million litres of petrol each day, amounting to about 730 million litres annually. Blending ethanol directly into petrol at storage depots, once quality standards are ensured, would allow NOC to gradually reduce import volumes.

네팔은 하루에 약 200만 리터의 휘발유를 소비하며, 이는 연간 약 7억 3천만 리터(약 73만톤)이다. 저장소에서 에탄올을 휘발유에 직접 혼합하는 방식은 품질 기준이 확보되면 네팔 국영 석유회사(NOC)가 점진적으로 수입량을 줄일 수 있게 해 줄 것이다.
