As some of my readers might be curious about what happened in the 8 years between the Searching For Hope EP and your new CD, can you talk a little bit about this period? Where was Sad Legend between 2001 and 2009? Were you recording any music during this time, or playing in other bands?
In 2009 a new Sad Legend album has at last been released, 11 years after the first one, titled The Revenge of Soul. What was the experience like recording your second full-length CD compared to the first? How long were these songs developed - how old are they? Did you write as well as record it all on your own this time?
Do you have a favorite song on the album? What song was most difficult to compose, or easiest?
I want to talk about both the concept and lyrics of your new album, which are interesting enough for a separate interview, but I would rather leave that for the second half of this interview. Let’s talk first about the band itself, past to present, and especially you, Naamah, the mastermind of Sad Legend. Around the beginning, Sad Legend had four people, right? But then everything changed and you are now the only “full-time” member. What happened to the others after the first album?
If I’m not wrong, ever since the Searching For The Hope MCD, you play drums, bass, guitar, and record vocals alone in the band. What challenges are there in recording music alone versus recording with a full band, as you have in the past? Do you prefer working on your own?
What instrument did you, Naamah, learn to play first and which instrument do you prefer above all? When did you find this talent in yourself to write music?
Someone online had said that, if he had your voice, he would walk around singing all day. I think this is pretty funny and I do agree. How did you come by such a mastery of your voice? Do you have vocal training, or are you self-taught? Is anyone else in your family a singer? Do you have other musicians in your family?
Not just the strength of your voice, but its extraordinary diversity and range contributes to Sad Legend’s power and originality. On the new album I can count something like five, maybe more, voices, one of which includes, amusingly, a sort of female singing, which I suppose led to the short-lived rumor that Naamah is not a man but a woman! Please talk about these different vocal styles that you use. Why not use an actual woman’s voice for the higher pitch vocals?
What were the first metal bands you have heard that inspired you to play in this metal style? Have you tastes radically changed? Were there any shops or media outlets for metal when you were younger in Korea, first discovering this music?
My guess is that the Korean metal scene is so small that bands need to help each other out. Is this true? Is there a strong comradeship in South Korea among metal listeners, and metal musicians? Do you find that your music is generally appreciated more in your country than outside?
Besides Sad Legend you have played in some famous Korean metal bands like Oathean and Silent Eye. At one time you were even together with the excellent Holymarsh, too, who unfortunately split up (why?). Do you play with other metal bands now or only Sad Legend? Since the majority of Korean music is not easy to find here in the States, what Korean bands do you suggest Westerners pick up and hear?
Return to the Sad Legend history, you began on Hammerheart Records, then moved to Jusin Productions for your MCD, and now you are on Nimrodel’s Rockspace Korea Entertainment for your new album... every thing you have released so far is on a different label! Why is this? Bad luck? Good luck?
What was the story with Hammerheart Records? For some reason I always though this was your own label since they are also from Seoul! But I think I am mistaken about this. They only released 4 CDs, I believe, all of them quite good (well, with the exception of Bishop of Hexen, perhaps) before ending... which I think is a shame because if they had discovered such great bands in such a short period of time, what could have come later might have been amazing... what do you think?
Your self-titled album on Hammerheart has been reissued at least twice... the last time in 2005 with two live bonus tracks, but is pretty much impossible to find at least in the United States. Please talk about these reissues. Do you have any inclination to reissue the MCD or demo tapes in the future?
Please talk about the art on your releases, and the lack of art on Searching For The Hope... It looks like you have the same woman from the self-titled release drawn on your new release. Is this a conscious continuity? Is this the same artist from your first album?
The earlier Sad Legend material was mostly about fantasy, it seems to me, while the new album is based on the very real historical atrocities committed by the Japanese during World War II... what inspired you to create an album based on a subject that I am sure is highly sensitive for many people? Have you had friends who were personally affected by the actions of Imperialist Japan?
Because of the directness of your lyrics, which are quite easily the most anti-Japanese thing I have ever read in any metal album, and because this is Sad Legend, I was taken a little unexpected at first with the concept of The Revenge of Soul, but considering that some Japanese still defend their actions during the war to this day, I think to draw attention to these subjects could be a positive thing. Why do you think so many Japanese still cannot accept what has happened, despite there being no censorship on this subject? For example, in Germany, to deny the Jewish Holocaust is a crime, yet in Japan, with its own Holocaust of the Chinese and Koreans, one is free to deny it all they like... there is no state censorship. How do you feel about this?
The most terrifying part of the Japanese legacy that is perhaps best known in the West in the story of Unit 731, the human experimentation camp headed by the infamous madman, Shiro Ishii. Of what I have read and of what I know, the things that Ishii did make even Germany’s Josef Mengele pale in comparison. This is perhaps one of the most deranged chapters ever recorded in the history of humanity. My question to you is: what do you think may have caused such people to lose their senses and to see people as nothing more than mere “Maruta”, or logs for the fire? Is fanatic nationalism the root of this problem? Or is nationalism simply a scapegoat for something deeper down, locked inside and only waiting to come out? Is man fundamentally a cruel animal, or is he, as Rousseau had claimed, a creature innocent and kind until tainted by the institutions around him?
As is common knowledge, the Americans allowed the chief perpetrators of Unit 731 to escape unharmed after the War ended in transfer for their secrets on human experimentation and biological warfare. What do you think the actual reason for this was, if anything beyond the obvious? Why did the Americans let these maniacs go free? What should the US have done, in your opinion?
What do you think about the American involvement with the Japanese government during and after World War II? The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
There are some people who say that Korea would not have grown as quickly as it had if not for the Japanese occupation. Do you agree? What is your opinion?
You are living right next door to North Korea, which, in the US media, very little is known or spoken of, aside from its nuclear program and threats to the world. What is your own opinion on North Korea? Should the two countries unify?
Just some 60 years ago butchers were running around in your country, on the pretenses of serving country raping women, burying people alive, performing cannibalism, dissecting people, every form of insanity conceivable, legitimized under war. Taking in mind the huge changes in your country that have happened since then, do you think what had happened in World War II can happen again? Is history destined to repeat itself? What should the Japanese and other countries do to avoid such tragedies?
On a lighter note, I have read somewhere Sad Legend has created a cover song of an old anime called Demetan Croaker... is this for a CD of some kind? Are you a fan of anime?
Sad Legend has a new live line-up and will be playing live again, it looks like, just as you have in the past. What can one expect in a Sad Legend live concert? Do you have any plans to play outside of your country? Perhaps a large tour?
So, Naamah, coming to an end here, now that your new album is complete, and Sad Legend is back to life, what do you think... will we need to wait another 11 years for a full length album?
