With this year's major awards categories figuring to be some of the closest races we've seen in years, and individual
to gauge who might be taking home the hardware. With their votes in, we now turn to the official vote to see if the media agrees with the teams' decision makers.
May 1 -- Boris Diaw of the Phoenix Suns was named the winner of the 2005-06
NBA Most Improved Player Award. The annual award is presented to a player who has made a dramatic improvement from the previous season or seasons.
Diaw received a total of 489 points, including 80 first-place votes, from a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. New Orleans/Oklahoma City’s David West finished second with 283 points (22 first-place votes) followed by New Jersey’s Nenad Krstic with 65 points (four first-place votes).
Clippers' Brand Wins Sportsmanship Award
April 30 -- Elton Brand of the Los Angeles Clippers is the recipient of the Joe Dumars Trophy, presented to the 2005-06
NBA Sportsmanship Award winner.
Originally presented following the 1995-96 season, the Sportsmanship Award honors a player who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court -- ethical behavior, fair play and integrity. The trophy is named for former Detroit Pistons guard and Hall of Famer Joe Dumars, the award’s first recipient.
Grizzlies' Miller Wins Sixth Man Award
April 28 -- Mike Miller of the Memphis Grizzlies has been named the winner of the 2005-06
NBA Sixth Man Award, honoring the league’s top player in a reserve role.
Miller received 501 out of a possible 615 points, including 88 of a possible 123 first-place votes, from a panel of 123 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Speedy Claxton of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets finished second with 205 points and Jerry Stackhouse finished third with 162 points.
Garnett Wins Kennedy Citizenship Award
April 27 -- Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves is the 2006 recipient of the
J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award presented annually by the Professional Basketball Writers Association. The award is named for the second commissioner of the league and honors an NBA player or coach for outstanding service and dedication to the community.
Mavericks' Johnson Named Coach of the Year
April 25 -- On April 25, the first award of the year was announced, as Dallas' Avery Johnson was named the
winner of the Red Auerbach Trophy as the NBA Coach of the Year. In his first full season as the Mavericks' head coach, Johnson received 63 first-place votes and 419 total points, from a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada.
Johnson became the first coach in Mavericks history to receive the honor after leading his team to a franchise-best 60-22 record -- the third-best mark in the league this year. After taking over for Don Nelson on March 19, 2005, Johnson won 66 of his first 82 games and became the fastest coach to 50 wins.
