WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 (Yonhap) -- The U.S. State Department on Friday officially announced Joseph Yun, former U.S. special representative for North Korea, as charge d'affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, saying he will work to advance the two countries' mutual interest and "ironclad" alliance.

Yun, who served as the envoy for North Korea from 2016-2018, is set to assume office in the Asian country as former Ambassador Philip Goldberg retired earlier this month ahead of incoming President Donald Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20.

His appointment comes as both South Korea and the United States seek to ensure that the bilateral alliance remains robust despite the political turmoil following President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived martial law declaration and subsequent impeachment.

"Ambassador Yun will work with the Embassy team and the Republic of Korea (ROK)'s government to advance our mutual interests and shared values, as well as our ironclad commitment to the U.S.-ROK Alliance," the department said in a media note, referring to South Korea by its official name.

"The Department of State expresses its great appreciation to Ambassador Yun for his distinguished public service in advancing the values and interests of the United States," it added.

Yun was expected to arrive in Seoul on Saturday, according to sources.
Yun previously served as ambassador to Malaysia from 2013-2016 and principal deputy assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific affairs from 2011-2013. He also served at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul in the past.

(워싱턴=연합뉴스) 김동현 특파원 = 미국 바이든 행정부가 조셉 윤 전 국무부 대북정책특별대표를 주한미국대사관 대사대리로 파견한다고 공식 발표했다.

국무부는 10일 보도자료에서 "조셉 윤 대사를 서울 주재 미국 대사관의 대사대리로 임명했다"고 밝혔다.

국무부는 "윤 대사는 한국에서 양국의 상호 이익과 공동의 가치, 한미동맹에 대한 우리의 철통같은 공약을 진전시키기 위해 대사관 팀과 한국 정부와 협력할 것"이라고 설명했다.

대사대리는 공관장인 대사가 부재일 경우 임시로 그 역할을 대리하는 자리다.

바이든 행정부에서 임명돼 지난 2022년 7월 임기를 시작한 필립 골드버그 전 주한미국대사는 오는 20일 트럼프 행정부 출범을 앞두고 관례대로 퇴직했고, 지난 7일 한국을 떠났다.

윤 대사대리는 트럼프 행정부가 새 주한미국대사를 지명해 상원 인준을 마칠 때까지 대사대리직을 수행할 전망이다.
