외국 가곡의 번안

현대의 대중 음악은 19세기 초반 독일에서 가곡(lied;詩歌)의 왕 슈베르트로부터 시작되었다고 볼 수 있으며 그 이전까지의 음악은 주로 왕궁과 교회가 주관하고 후원하는 귀족위주의 음악이었다고 할 수 있다. 이어 미국에서 19세기 중반에 민스트럴 쇼(떠돌며 詩歌曲 공연)를 통하여 포스터 등의 가곡이 대중화되었다. 음반이 1887년에 미국에서 최초로 나왔고 19세기의 전문 가곡 작가들은 악보를 출판하여 판매한 인세수입이 전부였으므로 비록 저작권 보호가 시작되기는 했으나 경제적으로 매우 어려웠을 것으로 생각된다. 우리나라에서 대중 음악은 20세기 초반에 시작되어 중반에 대중화되었다고 볼 수 있다.

노래는 가사와 곡조로 이루어져 있다. 이 중에서 가사는 곡조보다 그 중요성이 결코 작지 않고, 가요를 소개할 때는 먼저 가사와 그 작가를 다루게 된다. 우리나라의 번안곡들을 보면 대개 곡조는 그대로 쓰거나 최소한의 수정을 가한 반면, 가사는 전혀 다른 내용으로 수정하여 곡조만 빌린 새로운 창작가요가 된 것이 많다. 되도록 원작 시의 아름다운 내용과 감정을 훼손하지 말고 우리말로 그대로 살리는 것이 번안가요에 있어서 매우 중요하다.
