A free Pokémon card giveaway at Seoul Forest was canceled Friday after an estimated 40,000 people flooded the Seongsu-dong area by noon, overwhelming the venue and prompting safety concerns on Korea's first Labor Day as an official public holiday.

금요일 정오까지 성수동에 약 4만 명이 몰려들어 행사장이 포화 상태에 이르고, 한국 최초의 공휴일인 노동절에 안전 문제가 발생하자 서울숲에서 열릴 예정이었던 무료 포켓몬 카드 증정 행사가 취소되었다.

Pokémon Korea posted a notice on its social media channels announcing the cancellation of the on-site giveaway, which had been organized as part of its 30th-anniversary celebration "Pokemon Mega Festa" alongside the Seoul International Garden Show.

포켓몬 코리아는 공식 소셜 미디어 채널을 통해 서울국제정원박람회와 함께 진행된 포켓몬 30주년 기념 행사 '포켓몬 메가 페스타' 현장 증정 행사를 취소한다고 공지했다.

"The giveaway event promo card 'Magikarp' has been canceled due to on-site safety concerns," the notice read, adding that applications would instead be accepted later through an online form. "Everyone who met the event conditions today will receive the items, so please feel free to leave the event."

공지에는 "현장 안전상의 이유로 증정 이벤트 프로모션 카드 '잉어킹' 행사가 취소되었습니다."라며, 추후 온라인으로 응모를 받을 예정이라고 밝혔다. "오늘 행사 조건을 충족하신 분들께는 이미 증정품을 전달해 드렸으니, 행사장을 떠나셔도 됩니다."

The Seoul city government is reported to have requested the cancellation.

The event had offered a rare promotional Magikarp card, one of the franchise’s characters, along with a themed sun visor in exchange for collecting stamps across the area.

이번 행사에서는 포켓몬 캐릭터 중 하나인 잉어킹 희귀 프로모션 카드와 행사장 곳곳에 스탬프를 모으면 테마 선바이저를 증정할 예정이었다.

The combination of a national holiday, a rare collectible and its resale value appear to have driven the turnout far beyond expectations.

국경일과 희귀 수집품, 그리고 높은 재판매 가치 때문에 예상보다 훨씬 많은 사람들이 행사장에 몰렸던 것으로 보인다.

As of 4 p.m. Friday, the card was listed for resale at 286,000 won ($194) on Kream, an online resale platform.

오후 4시 기준 금요일, 해당 카드는 온라인 재판매 플랫폼인 크림에서 28만 6천 원(194달러)에 재판매 매물로 등록되었다.

On social media, many users documented the chaos, posting about the difficulties they experienced because of the massive crowd.

소셜 미디어에서는 많은 사용자들이 엄청난 인파로 인한 혼란과 어려움을 토로하는 게시물을 올렸다.

One user wrote, “The internet is not working,” while posting photos of people packing the Seongsu-dong and Seoul Forest area.

한 사용자는 성수동과 서울숲 일대에 인파가 가득 찬 사진과 함께 "인터넷이 안 된다"고 썼다.

Another user wrote, “One Pokemon card paralyzed Seoul Forest … This free Magikarp card is worth 90,000 won in Korea and up to 150,000 won overseas.”

또 다른 사용자는 "포켓몬 카드 한 장 때문에 서울숲이 마비됐다… 이 잉어킹 카드는 한국에서는 9만 원, 해외에서는 최대 15만 원까지 가치가 있다"고 썼다.
