아리랑이 유네스코 인류무형유산으로 등재된 것을 축하하고, DC 일원 미국인과 타민족 사람들에게
아리랑을 화폭에 담은 작품을 통해 ‘아리랑’에 스며 있는 한국인의 고유한 삶과 정서를 소개하기 위해 마련됐다.

신록의 계절 6월을 맞아 워싱턴 DC 한국문화원에서 김정 화백 초대전을 갖게 된 것을 매우 기쁘게 생각한다. 김정 화백은 평생 동안 한국의 대표 민요 ‘아리랑’을 주제로 활발한 작품 활동을 해오고 있으며 ‘아리랑’ 작가로도 불리우고 있다. ‘워싱턴 DC 아리랑’ 전시회는 아리랑이 유네스코 인류무형유산으로 등재된 것을 축하하고, DC 일원 미국인과 타민족 사람들에게 아리랑을 화폭에 담은 작품을 통해 ‘아리랑’에 스며 있는 한국인의 고유한 삶과 정서를 소개하기 위해 마련됐다. 특히 이번 전시회는 아리랑의 전통 가락과 리듬을 서정적 색채와 아름다운 선으로 표현하며 현대 예술적 시각으로 풀어낸 35점의 아리랑 작품들을 통해 한국의 정체성과 아리랑의 다양한 모습을 알리는 기회가 될 것으로 이다. 김정 화백의 초대전이 성공하기를 기원하며,  “듣는 아리랑”에서 “보는아리랑”으로 아리랑의 영역을 확장시키며 한국 전통문화와 현대 미술의 조화를 위해 평생동안 노력해 오신 김정 화백의 열정에 감사드린다.

It is my great pleasure to welcomeartist Kim Jung to the Korean Cultural Center Washington D.C. to help launch the summer season with a wonderful June exhibition. For much of his career, Kim Jung has dedicated his artwork to the theme of Arirang, the most famous and popular traditional folk song of Korea. Thus, he is well-known as the Arirang Artist. Washington D.C. Arirang celebrates this important folk song’s beloved status and its inscription in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It also introduces Korea’s distinct cultural lifestyle by translating Arirang into visual art on canvas. The soothing colors and beautiful lines of these 35 Arirang-themed works represent modern artistic perspectives on the traditional lyrics and rhythms of Korea. This unique synergy will present a great opportunity for visitors from across our region to better understand Korean cultural ide ntity and character. We are grateful to Kim Jung for his passion and lifetime dedication to expanding the various meanings of Arirang from "hearing" to "seeing,"and for creating a unique harmony of Korean traditional culture and contemporary art. I wish him the greatest success with this exhibition, and sincerely thank our many guests for being part of it.
