아르헨티나 페론 대통령(1946-55,1973-74)의
둘째 부인이자
1930,40년대 라디오 배우로 성공적 명성을 날렸으며
33살의 짧은 나이(1919-1952)에 암으로 세상을 떠난
그녀의 삶을 그린 뮤지컬 베이스의 뮤지컬 영화
"에비타(1996)"의 탄생을 부른 장본인이다.

에비타역은"Like A Virgin”(1984)을
첫번째 히트곡으로 올린 대중가수이자 배우인
마돈나가 맡았다.

생의 마지막 순간 국민들에게 자신의 죽음을 슬퍼하지 말라는
명언을 남겨 지금까지 ‘에비타'의 타이틀곡으로 전해져 내려오는
주인공 에바 페론.

마리아 에바 두아르테 데 페론이라는 긴 이름을 가진
에비타(에바의 애칭)는 아르헨 북부 후닌이라는 도시에서
1919년5월7일 태어나 16세 때인 1935년 무작정 수도인
부에노스로 올라와 3류배우와 라디오 아나운서, 모델 등을 거치며
10여년 동안을 비참한 생활을 했던 것으로 알려진다. 

그러던 그녀의 삶이 극적으로 변화를 한 건 1944년
후안 도밍고 페론이라는 야심만만한 군인을 알게 되면서부터다. 
페론의 집권으로 한 순간에 퍼스트레이디로 변한 에비타는
가난이 한이 되어서일까. 빈민노동자천국을 만들겠다는
심 찬 프로젝트를 구상, 국가정책의 최우선순위가 빈민구제였고
국가의 모든 재정을 노동자들을 위해 퍼부었다.   

아나운서출신이었던 그녀는 명연설가로
아르헨티노들의 심금을 울렸는가 하면
파리 패션계의 여왕으로 군림하며 화려하고 열정적으로 살다가
33세의 나이로 요절한 에바의 생애는 가히
한편의 드라마 같은 삶이었다고 할 것이다.
 

그녀가 당시 아르헨티나에서 차지한 비중을 보여주는 한 대목을
그녀에 관한 이야기들에서 보면 이렇게 기록하고 있는데 가히 놀라울 정도다
A measure of her enormous appeal among her fellow citizens
could be seen in the outpouring of grief that followed her death.
Close to a million Argentineans crowded
the streets of Buenos Aires for her funeral procession,
and an estimated three million filed past her casket
to pay their last respects.
The myth of "Saint Eva" was kept alive
by frequent requests to the Vatican for her canonization.
Forty thousand such appeals were received
in the two years following her death.

The story of what happened to Eva's body after death
is almost as fascinating as her life.

After the funeral in early August,
the corpse was moved to the Confederation of Labor headquarters,
where it remained for three years,
while government officials worked out plans for a monument
as huge as the Statue of Liberty.
But when the military overthrew Peron in 1955,
a lieutenant colonel with a squad of soldiers
seized the building and removed the body,
fearful that the Peronistas would snatch it for a totem to rally behind.

The grand finale 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina'
was a major production.
Five thousand extras packed the square in front of the Casa Rosada
with Madonna on the balcony above them.
She had a very tight dress on and understandably

didn't want to use the Radio Station body pack.
Her monitor was sent by Radio Station to an amp on the balcony,
which in turn powered an induction loop at her feet,
while she wore an induction receiver.
Other takes used a pair of speakers at her feet.
Fourteen speakers were used to bounce sound off the buildings in the square.
It was at night and the atmosphere was electric
