Lorin Varencove Maazel (from March 6, 1930 to July 13, 2014) is a Jewish American conductor, violinist and composer from France.

For the first time ever performed by an American orchestra in North Korea,

was broadcast live not only across North Korea, but around the world.

On his internet homepage, Maazel said, "Arirang brought Americans and North Koreans together." After arriving at Incheon Airport for a successive Seoul performance, “I received the best hospitality of my life, far exceeding expectations from the North Koreans,” he said. As Maazel pointed out the human rights situation in North Korea and criticized the New York Philharmonic's performance in Pyongyang, he defended the decision to perform in an article in the Wall Street Journal newspaper, saying, "Art is completely non-political, nonpartisan, and should not be linked to a particular issue,"
