Gallery Dam, which has quietly resonated with contemporary art from its home on Yunboseon-gil in Anguk-dong, Seoul, marks its 20th anniversary with a special commemorative exhibition. Since opening with Roh Kyung-jo's exhibition *Birch* on April 5, 2006, the gallery has remained rooted in Anguk-dong through 2026, striving to present works capable of forging genuine resonance within the art world.
The exhibition's title, *Crossing the Arirang Pass*, speaks to a life that moves through open fields, over passes, and onward in flow — reflecting what Gallery Dam, still only twenty years old and still finding its way, hopes to show through art at this stage.
Part One of the 20th anniversary exhibition brings together, under one roof, the work of five leading Japanese artists — Toshimatsu Kuremoto, Takeshi Machiya, Koji Misawa, SINZOW, and Kei Arai — each of whom has built a deep artistic rapport and lasting trust with Gallery Dam over many years.
Kei Arai
Toshimatsu Kuremoto
Koji Misawa
Takeshi Machiya
The title *Crossing the Arirang Pass* symbolizes both the trajectory of time that the gallery and its artists have traversed together over the past two decades, and the depth of solidarity forged through art as a universal language that transcends borders and tongues. The exhibition highlights the profound reflection and resonance of artists who have each constructed a distinctive formal language — through painting, sculpture, ink work, and handcrafted motifs.
Over the past twenty years, Gallery Dam has remained steadfast against commercial trends, continuing to present exhibitions that illuminate artists' authenticity and the intrinsic depth of painting and sculpture. The gallery wishes to extend its gratitude to the artists who have shared their art with Gallery Dam, and to the audiences who have shared in it.
Featured Artists and Works
Kei Arai
A professor of conservation and restoration of Japanese painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, Arai draws on deep insight cultivated through work in cultural heritage conservation to present *Painting of Insects and Flowers*. Working on traditional Japanese paper, the artist renders poppies in powdered mineral pigment (funsai), leaves and buds in mineral pigment (sekisai), and butterflies and bees in watercolor, lending the work dimensionality and vitality. Through poppies blooming in a garden and the butterflies, bees, and insects drawn to them, the artist offers a wish for the health and happiness of all who live amid nature's abundance.
Toshimatsu Kuremoto
Even in the maturity of his seventies, Kuremoto continues an unceasing formal experimentation, presenting "three-dimensional paintings" that dissolve the boundary between painting and sculpture. Using materials marked by the passage of time — sheet-tin fragments, canvas, architectural materials, and ship propellers — he conveys a weighty sense of presence and space within life. He symbolically renders the figure of the modern urbanite as a bespectacled individual. The oval sphere on which this figure stands is hammered iron, welded and then ground down again, reflecting light onto those who have labored diligently through their lives — affirming that everyone living in this world is the protagonist of their own story.
Koji Misawa
For more than thirty years, Misawa has visualized the invisible accumulation of time through painting, building "strata of time" through the repetitive movement of the hand and layer upon layer of built-up paint. Following his 2024 solo exhibition at Gallery Dam, this show extends the depth of his painting into three-dimensional objects such as monoliths, giving form to the weight of time layered upon itself and the faint warmth that seeps out from within it. Built from dozens of successive layers of acrylic and medium, the works reveal both the trace of the brush and the strata of time.
SINZOW
First drawing attention with the Silver Award at GEISAI, curated by Takashi Murakami, in 2001, SINZOW has held more than fifteen solo exhibitions at Gallery Dam since his debut show there in 2009, sustaining a deep rapport with the gallery. His work is defined by thickly applied paint, bold primary colors, and simplified, primitivist figurative imagery that breaks through the darkness of existence in expression. In the work *Spaghetti*, the artist paints a self-portrait putting his own hair into his mouth; woven among the strands of hair is the hiragana for "self-sufficiency," underscoring his identity as an economic agent unto himself.
Takeshi Machiya
Drawn since childhood to toys and playthings, Machiya has long worked with discarded pieces of wood, and more recently has traced the "tactile sense of reality" now vanishing amid the smoothness of the digital age. In his work *Cucumber and Time*, the boy and the measuring tools used to gauge his height are carved from wood, while the clock is 3D-printed — grafting contemporary materials onto his traditional practice of wood carving. From the raw material resistance of charcoal and wood, to capsule works passed through 3D scanning, to Japanese tenugui (hand towels) infused with artisanal handwork, Machiya poses questions about the fundamental sense embedded in the touch of the human hand.
