[Exhibition Review]
Filtration of Memory: Lyrical Scenery Woven by Everyday Objects
In art, remembering and expressing daily life is an act of capturing the extraordinary existence hidden within the familiar scenery we encounter every day. The artist grasps the fleeting moments of life that are easily blurred or fragmented by the passage of time, settling them firmly onto the surface by combining the material characteristics of Oriental painting with a contemporary formative language. Instead of a grand narrative, this exhibition is a lyrical journey demonstrating how the humble plants, flowers, fruits, and vessels around us are transformed into sublime aesthetic symbols through the filter of the artist's inner world.
Within the artist’s canvas, everyday objects do not remain in mechanical reproduction; instead, they are reinterpreted into bold silhouettes and sensuous color planes where only the essence remains. At times manifested as flowers and plants blooming in deep shades of blue and purple, and at other times as clusters of fruits filling the screen with bold complementary color contrasts, these shapes project the temperature of the air and the afterimages of emotion felt by the artist at that very moment, transcending the physical appearance of the objects.
The most crucial formative characteristic traversing this exhibition is the harmony between the restrained color planes of Bunchae (powder pigment) forming the base of the shapes, and the tactile, three-dimensional presence of Hobun (clam shell white) densely layered on top. Bunchae—which reveals its deep, inherent color only when transparent layers are meticulously stacked one after another rather than being finished in a single brushstroke—perfectly mirrors the multi-layered structure of memory that overlaps and recolors within the mind over time.
Furthermore, the forms rendered in white by applying Hobun over the carefully accumulated layers of Bunchae serve as an aesthetic device that imparts physical volume and vivid vitality to the flat surface. The everyday memories that tend to scatter or sink down finally emerge as distinct afterimages, almost within reach, through this white three-dimensionality of Hobun resting upon the deep color strata of Bunchae. The harmony of the subtly settled, serene color planes of Bunchae and the Hobun that dimensionally draws out the skeleton of the object adds a tactile lyricism and grace to the canvas.
The bold simplification of forms found throughout the paintings evokes a contemporary graphic sensibility, while paradoxically reinterpreting the traditional virtue of Oriental painting, "the beauty of void," in a modern way. The presentation, which blurs the boundary between the subject and the background or highlights the object as a solitary entity through drastic visual contrasts, draws the viewer into a deep meditative space beyond the canvas. The moment the fragments of ordinary daily life pass through the artist's gaze, they begin to shine, each harboring its own universe.
Memory is not a fixed past, but a living energy that is constantly reproduced upon meeting current sensibilities. Fluently traversing the boundaries between figuration and abstraction, and the depth of traditional mediums and contemporary sensibilities, the artist's lyrical iconography awakens the afterimages of daily life slumbering within each viewer's heart. Through these quiet yet powerful landscapes, it will warmly remind us that our own precious colors of memory are shimmering at every turn of the monotonous lives we lead each day.
(Artist Statement)

The evening glow is particularly beautiful today. It is the most heart-fluttering time of the day.
Looking at the sunset, the memories of each day overlap one by one, like thin sheets of tissue paper. Things that were unpleasant or infuriating tend to fade into indifference as time passes, or sometimes bring a quiet chuckle when looking back. Memories I am grateful for return with a deep sense of appreciation.
The things that make me happy and allow me to peacefully conclude each day are not grand. It is the warmth of a morning cup of coffee, a single flower blooming in a corner of the balcony, or a phone call from a missed friend. They are modest moments of memory—things I haven't forgotten, that haven't forgotten me, and that have stayed by my side.
The theme of "Moments of Memory" holds a deep place in my work. By layering moments of memory and fragments of daily life, I build up layers of memory through repeated brushstrokes and rich layers of bunchae (traditional Korean pigment).
By expressing on the canvas memories that might one day be forgotten, I am facing, in my own way, a deep heart that wishes to be grateful for every single moment.
If someone stops before my quiet paintings, I hope they too can discover the precious colors of memory hidden within their own monotonous lives. Tonight is a night when I wish to share a warm smile and connect heart-to-heart, reflecting on how remarkably kind and beautiful a universe has been supporting us at every corner of the paths we walk each day.
