마음을 같이하여

화목은 아버지께서 아들 예수님께 주신 직책입니다. 세상에 인간의 몸을 입고 보내실 때 아버지와 사람사이의 무너진 틈을 메꾸도록 사명을 주신 것입니다. 죄의 벽이 사람의 힘으로 넘을 수 없을 만큼 높아 보일 때 주님은 자신의 몸을 던져 그 벽을 부수시고 화평의 복음을 전하십니다.

세상은 원수를 갚으라고 말합니다. 구약은 받은 만큼만 돌려주라고 말합니다. 그러나 바울은 친히 원수를 갚지 말고 하나님께 맡기라고 하십니다. 복수하기로 결심한 사람은 자신을 재판관의 자리에 올려놓는 것입니다. 상대방에게 유죄를 선언하고 어떤 변호도 듣지 않습니다. 자신이 이미 모든 것을 판단하고 알고 결정했기 때문입니다.

문제는 상대에 대한 용서하지 않는 마음은 정작 자신을 갉아먹기 시작한다는 것입니다. 마치 숯을 품고 불에 몸이 타지 않으리라 생각하는 것 만큼 어리석은 사람이 됩니다. 그러나 용서는 그 숯을 하늘에 던지는 것입니다.

이는 용서가 상대를 위한 것보다 먼저 자신을 고통에서 해방시키는 행위라는 것입니다. 용서는 죄의 짐을 십자가에 내려놓는 것입니다. 더 이상 내가 그 죄를 상관하지 않겠다는 결심이며 그리스도의 주권앞에 복수심을 내려놓고 자유케 되는 은혜를 덧입는 것입니다.

원수을 먹이고 마시게 하는 일은 숯불을 그 머리에 쌓는 일이라고 합니다. 고대 근동의 풍습에 불씨를 꺼뜨린 여인은 바구니를 머리에 이고 집집마다 돌아다닙니다. 그러면 이웃들이 숯불을 하나씩 던져서 그 집에 불씨를 피우도록 도와줍니다. 이는 곧 작은 도움으로 이웃의 연약을 돕는 상호부조의 형식입니다.

주님은 숯불을 던져서 그의 회복을 돕는 행위의 열매를 보기 원하십니다. 나의 삶이 이기심과 분노와 질투로 가득한 마음으로 시들지 않도록 돕는 마음, 위로하고 격려하는 마음, 이웃의 행복을 바라는 마음으로 바꾸시길 원하십니다. 그 결과 나의 마음에 참 평안과 기쁨을 회복하시려는 그 분의 큰 그림이 완성될 것입니다.

United in Heart

Reconciliation is the sacred calling the Father entrusted to His Son, Jesus. When He sent Him into the world clothed in human flesh, He gave Him the mission to mend the broken bond between God and humanity. When the wall of sin loomed too high for human strength to scale, Christ hurled His own body against it—shattering its grip and proclaiming the gospel of peace.

The world urges revenge. The Old Testament permits retribution in equal measure. But Paul teaches us to leave vengeance in God’s hands. To seek revenge is to place ourselves in the judge’s seat—declaring guilt, refusing defense, and rendering verdicts from a heart already hardened.

Yet the tragedy of unforgiveness is that it corrodes the soul of the one who harbors it. It is as foolish as clutching burning coals and believing you will not be burned. Forgiveness, then, is releasing those coals heavenward.

Forgiveness is not merely for the other—it is a liberation of the self. It is laying the burden of sin at the foot of the cross. It is a decision to no longer carry the weight of another’s wrong, surrendering vengeance to Christ’s authority and receiving the grace of freedom.

To feed and give drink to one’s enemy is to heap burning coals upon their head. In ancient Near Eastern tradition, a woman who lost her fire would carry a basket on her head, going door to door. Neighbors would toss in hot coals to help her rekindle her flame—a quiet act of mutual aid and compassion.

This is the fruit the Lord longs to see: the act of tossing coals to restore another. He desires to transform our hearts—so they do not wither in selfishness, anger, or envy, but bloom with comfort, encouragement, and a longing for our neighbor’s joy. In doing so, His grand design unfolds: the restoration of true peace and joy within us.
