Yesterday, we discussed genetic engineering.
If you remember, we defined it as the alteration of an organism at the genetic level.
Organisms with genetic modifications are called “genetically modified organisms,” or “GMOs.”
Today, I’d like to talk about the GloFish, a GMO fish that glows due to its modified DNA.
In 1999, a doctor in Singapore transferred a gene from a jellyfish into a zebrafish embryo.
The gene was responsible for the jellyfish’s luminescence.
The zebrafish’s genome accepted the transferred gene.
As a result, the zebrafish was born with a luminescent glow that can be seen in both white and ultraviolet light.
Breeding these altered zebrafish led to the offspring also having the gene.
This resulted in the creation of numerous GloFish.
The GloFish was then patented and trademarked.
GloFish are only available for sale in certain countries.
They are primarily sold as pets, as their unique glow and bright colors are interesting and attractive for children.
GMOs are most commonly used to improve human life in some way.
The GloFish, on the other hand, is merely for entertainment.
Some people have argued against the creation of GloFish, claiming it’s unethical to modify an animal just for entertainment purposes.
In addition to tonight’s reading homework, I would like you to write a response regarding the ethics of GMO animals.
