I have learned that the gift of tongue is when a person talks to God in a language other than the native one. The languages could sound like words that are out of this world and merely like a blabber in a person’s mouth. Some call this a heavenly language. The gift of tongue can also be the ability to speak in languages that have not been previously learned. I learned those two types of gifts of tongues through the local church many years ago.
I received the gift of tongue about 12 years ago during a prayer group meeting. I’ve only used it once. I remember distinctively that I was speaking in a different language during the prayer. Later, I learned I was speaking in Hindi and reciting India’s national anthem. I thought it was a strange way to start my gift of tongue. However, after the day I spoke in Hindi, I never used nor practiced the gift until I came to HODAH.
At HODAH, I revived the gift of the tongue through DKs prayers. This time, I spoke in a heavenly language. Since the day I restored it, I would use this gift every week when I pray to God. As I prayed more and more, I noticed that the pattern of the language also began to change. I told this experience and asked if this was normal to DK, and he replied yes. He also advised that when I pray alone, I should practice praying in my native language – Korean and English. This is so that they understand what I am saying when I pray for others.
When DK revealed that I should pray in my native language to pray for others, I was awestruck by the 3rd type of gift of tongue. Before I continue with the 3rd type, I’d like to recap the first two:
Types of Gift of Tongue
1. Ability to speak with words that are not of this world (Heavenly language).
2. Ability to speak in human languages that have not been previously learned.
But there is a 3rd! One of the most essential tongues to use as a Christian. The tongue that goes beyond my understanding and prayers that focus on others. This third tongue requires a person to speak his language but is still spirit-led as he prays and intercedes for others. It is a prayer that heals wounds, a prayer that encourages, and a prayer that blesses others. This prayer comes when others, whether Christian or non-Christian, request to pray for them on the spot.
As the words in the native language spill out for the requester, they receive a blessing that the world cannot give. To test this gift of tongue, look for the fruit of the requester. Faithfully and patiently wait for what God will do after the prayer; when the prayer request is answered, the requester will most likely return to share his testimony. Then, the one who prayed will know if he has this gift.
I didn’t realize before that praying for others was another gift of tongue.
Practicing and exercising the heavenly language during prayer is integral to my Christian walk. However, one day I look forward to the 3rd type as I intercede for others. I have experienced HODAH members and other devout Christians interceding on my behalf. I believe in how the Holy Spirit works through these giant Christians and know that they have all three types of gifts of tongue.
As DK suggested, I will practice my prayer in my native language when I am alone. May God bestow the 3rd type of tongue on me to serve His people. That would be the BEST gift I’ll ever receive from the Holy Spirit.
Amen
