I

I want a toy
When Mom went out shopping
I followed close behind
She only glanced at it
And we came home with nothing

But when Grandma came from the country
I took her to the toy shop
And she emptied her little purse
Quickly, without a second thought
And bought it for me

II

Dad came home
And for the first time in a long while
He brought us toys

He bought the same one
For my little brother and me
But my brother keeps asking
To trade with mine

If I give in
He wants it back
If I give in again
He asks again

They are the same
But to my brother
They don’t look the same
Maybe when it’s in my hands
It somehow looks better

III

A few days ago
At the little stationery shop
In front of my school
I saw a brand-new toy

I wanted it badly
But I had no money
So I left it there

Today I still had no money
But I went back again
And stared at it
Over and over

On my way home
I carried it with me
Tucked deep inside

장난감 갖고 싶어

엄마 장 보러 갈 때

따라갔더니

엄마는 보기만 하고

그냥 왔네

시골 할머니 오셔서

장난감 가게

모시고 갔더니

주머닛돈 다 털어

얼른 사 주시네

아버지가 집에

들어오시면서

오랜만에 사다 주신 장난감

동생하고 나하고

똑같은 것을 사다 주셨지만

동생은 자꾸 내 것하고

바꾸자고 합니다

바꾸어 주면

도로 바꾸자고 하고

바꾸어 주면

도로 바꾸자고 합니다

똑같은 것을 사다 주셨지만

동생에게는

똑같아 보이지 않나 봅니다

똑같은 것도 내가 가지면

더 좋아 보이나 봅니다

III

며칠 전 학교 앞

문방구에서

새로 나온 장난감을 보았지요

꼭 사고 싶었지만

살 돈이 없어

사지 못했지요

오늘도 돈은 없었지만

문방구 다시 가서 그 장난감

눈으로 몇 번이나 보았지요

집으로 돌아올 때

두 눈 속에

그 장난감 넣어 왔지요

Appreciation Review 感想

‘TOYS’ is a sweet and touching poem that shows how children feel about toys and love.

In Part I, the child wants a toy, but Mom only looks and goes home, because moms often have to think about money. But Grandma from the countryside buys the toy right away, showing her warm and generous love.

Part II is funny and very real: Dad buys the same toy for the child and his little brother, but the brother keeps asking to trade again and again. This shows a child’s jealousy and the feeling that “your toy looks better than mine.”

Part III feels a little sad but beautiful. The child has no money, but he goes back to the shop and looks at the toy many times. In the end, he “brings it home” inside his eyes, which is a lovely way to show imagination and strong wishing. This poem uses simple words to teach children about wanting, sharing, and family love.
